Frustrating news about Amy Ahearn

[Note: the Missing Amy Ahearn Facebook page seems to have the most up-to-date information re Ahearn.]
At long last, there is news regarding the Amy Ahearn disappearance. Today's Los Cerritos Community News offers this interesting if frustrating update:

Missing Orange County Professor Taken In By Norwalk Family, Goes Missing Again

According to the article (by Randy Economy), Ahearn “was taken in by a Norwalk family on September 18….”:
Ahearn … was found sitting in front [of] the home of Ana Ruvalcaba at around midnight on September 18 at the 11900 block of Ferina Street in Norwalk.
Ruvalcaba, 26, a lifelong resident of Norwalk and a mother of a four year old told LCCN that she and family members took Ahearn into her home "in the middle of the night" in mid-September after Ahearn told them that she was "waiting for a ride from a friend."
While inside the Ruvalcaba's home, Ahearn's wallet fell out of the back pack she was carrying, and this is when it was confirmed that the woman was Ahearn according to her driver’s license.
Ruvalcaba even took a picture of Ahearn with her cell phone and Los Cerritos Community News has obtained the photo. In the photo Ahearn is seen with a blanket around her lap.
. . .
Ruvalcaba said that from 2 to 6 a.m. Ahearn agreed to come inside their family home to "get out of the cold air" and gave Ahearn coffee.
After the sun rose on September 18, Ruvalcaba drove Ahearn to a local Motel 6 on Rosecrans Avenue in Norwalk so Ahearn could get a "place to stay." While waiting for a room to become available at the motel, Ahearn apparently wandered off to a nearby Carrow's Restaurant parking lot and that is where Ruvalcaba said last saw Ahearn.
. . .
Then, two weeks later on October 1, Rubalcava's aunt Maria Maldonado, spotted Ahearn near the Northgate Market at Firestone and Pioneer who was carrying the "same back pack" and "wearing the same clothes" from the night she was last seen on September 18….

The agenda for next Wednesday's board meeting

Today, denizens of the SOCCCD community were informed via email that the agenda for next Wednesday's meeting of the board of trustees is now available (here; bottom right of page).
I gave it a quick look. Nothing jumped out at me. A few notes:

     Here are the discussion items:

     I shall prepare to snooze.
As usual, the trustees are fixing to arrange payment for trustee Tom Fuentes's attendance of the last board meeting despite his absence. Oddly, at the last meeting, this move was made (re the previous meeting) by way of formal roll call vote. That had never occurred before.
Why the change? I sense CYA.
This time, the trustees plan to approve the following resolution:

Trustee Fuentes hasn't attended a board meeting for nearly eight months. It is no secret that he ceased attending because he has terminal cancer. One would have thought that, early in the year (he last attended in March), he would resign, knowing that he likely would not be attending further meetings. Had he done that, the existing defined process would have been employed to replace him.
     But that's not what happened.
Oddly, Wednesday's resolution grants Fuentes payment, not because of absence owing to illness, but, rather, absence owing to "a hardship."
Just what is the board up to here? It would appear that the trustees want Fuentes, their old colleague, to receive his district pay and bennies for as long as he remains alive. Perhaps the district's lawyers have explained to them how to do that.
Is all this in the public interest somehow?

"Community education" is up for approval. I am always amused by the courses that our colleges offer under this "rubric." Some of 'em are pretty far south of academic. They're pretty far south of other things, too.
Here are some examples of what's up for approval Wednesday:
Be your own private investigator
Brewing basics
Feng Shui
Golfnosis
Hollywood 2.0
Internet dating
Mystery shopping
Six-figure speaking
The secret revealed
Writing for millions
I especially like the "secret revealed" course. Secret of what exactly? That is not specified. Wonderful.
And community colleges want to be taken more seriously. Yeah. That's gonna happen.

Item 5.7 concerns guest speakers at the colleges. I noticed that there is a request for $1500 payment for a Dr. Donelly to lecture on “The Mystery of the Worldwide Disappearance of Frogs.” (I don't object; it just sounds funny is all.)

Evidently, next Wednesday, we'll be adjusting the geographical trustee areas:

Don plays the game

A year or so ago, I noticed that Pastor Mark Whitlock, a worrisomely attractive and charismatic local minister, had become a familiar face in our district. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but, for a while there, the guy’s mug seemed to pop up everywhere.
I remember asking, "What's that guy running for?"
Well, Whitlock is doing well. Today, the LA Sentinel reports that Whitlock’s church, Christ Our Redeemer (an A.M.E. church) in Irvine, recently held a special service to burn the mortgage. The congregation has done so well that, despite the shittay economy, it’s managed to pay off its loan in just five years.
Various VIPs were in attendance, of course.
And guess what? That’s right. Assemblyman Don Wagner was there!
Naturally, he brought along a resolution from the State Assembly. Don't know what it said.
Hey, didn’t he bring one of those along to the Sept. board meeting to honor Bill Hewitt?
     Yep.
Do you suppose that that’s all Don does up in Sacramento? —Crank out these resolutions and then show up all over the place like freakin' Santa Claus?
Could be. He sure as hell isn't doing anything for public education.

Fight breaks out on California Assembly floor during budget debate.
Said Don: I will "apologize to any Italian Americans who are not in the Mafia and engaged in insurance scams"

Is Potter an IVC student yet?

UPDATE, 11/14: As near as we can tell, Ms Potter has applied to IVC (has a student record in our system), but she has yet to enroll in classes

On Tuesday (Nov. 8), a colleague forwarded to me an email from another colleague that excitedly reported that “a current IVC student received recognition from President Obama and was nominated for a Presidential Committee.” The latter email included what appeared to be the relevant verbiage of the White House announcement.
So I copied some of that verbiage and then Googled it. That brought me to the relevant White House website, where, indeed, I found that one Lauren Elizabeth Potter, a member of the cast of “Glee,” was announced as a member of the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, on Nov. 4.
The White House announcement stated, among other things, that Ms. Potter “is currently a student at Irvine Valley College.”
Naturally, I posted the contents of that page (re Potter) and the link to the White House website, sans commentary. (Irvine Valley College student appointed to committee by President Obama)
I included a photo of Ms. Potter.
Since then, some readers have questioned our college’s apparent decision not to report the (apparent) news that one of our own was thus honored.
I did not participate in that, but I did find it odd that none of the local press had picked up this little story—the sort of thing that they usually love to blather about.
Today, two days after the post, a college official emailed me to “inform” me that “Lauren Potter has never taken a class at IVC. Hopefully, she will enroll for Spring.”
I’m attempting to get this sorted out. Stay tuned.
Whether or not she is currently an IVC student, Lauren Potter seems to be an admirable young lady, and I'm pleased to learn that President Obama has seen fit to honor her in this way.
I might even start watching "Glee."
