Santiago Canyon College President John Hernandez is moving his office 10 miles south to be the president of Irvine Valley College.
South Orange County Community College District Chancellor Kathleen Burke has recommended her board of trustees appoint Hernandez after a nationwide search to replace Glenn Roquemore, who left the job in October 2019 and is now the president of California Southern University in Costa Mesa. If the board approves his contract, Hernandez will start his new job on Aug.1.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Dr. John Hernandez and have all the confidence that he will lead Irvine Valley College in the next wave of progress and development,” Burke said in the district’s May 28 press release.
No details about Hernandez’s contract were available Thursday, May 28, as it is subject to change by the board, district spokeswoman Letitia Clark said.
Hernandez has been the president of Santiago Canyon College in Orange since July 2016. Before that, he had worked as the college’s vice president for student services for 11 years.
Hernandez couldn’t be reached for comment. But before his public candidate forum on May 7, he said Irvine Valley College’s “commitment to student equity in both access and achievement” matches his values and record.
As president of Santiago Canyon College, Hernandez has grown the school’s enrollment, especially among international students, said Marvin Martinez, chancellor of the Rancho Santiago Community College District.
“He has made the campus not just into a local campus that meets the need of the community, but also an international campus,” Martinez said.
Martinez said he’s happy for Hernandez as he moves forward in his career. He expects to have a national search to fill Hernandez’s position by July 2021, just as the district is doing for the Santa Ana College president position, Martinez said.
Current Santa Ana College President Linda Rose has announced she will retire July 1 after four years in her position. Santiago Canyon College Vice President of Academic Affairs Marilyn Flores has been chosen to fill Rose’s position in the interim.
For both president positions, Martinez said he hopes to find leaders who can be flexible as they steer colleges during the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath.

IVC Commences! (and a new president is named!)

IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT 2020: A BIG, SUNNY DAY

We're sure today would have been just as sunny as last year's commencement so here's a little déjà vu, a little Groundhog Day to get you in the spirit.

Do watch today's virtual commencement here (20 minutes):

Then peruse the posted congratulations by faculty here. (Kurt Meyer wins the prize.)
Then enjoy these photos from last year, because hey, it was a big sunny day and we were all outside, close together celebrating.

Breaking news:  Dr. John Hernandez is our new prez.

(For an even chirpier take—if such can be imagined—see also IVC's Facebook Page or IVC Flickr)

Lots of happy students

Always lots of little kids at these things.

Mark's been teaching at IVC since 1979. (As a full-timer since 1980.)
I owe him a case of beer. Why? We've all forgotten.

Yep, some dogs were in attendance.

AFTER THE CEREMONY:

A rough year for so many pictured here but it's hard to be cynical in the face of such hope.

Seriously smart, too. Scary smart.
Some of the Humanities crowd (English, History, Pre-School)

In the halls of the Humanities. Note the Canadian and Mexican flags. Meanwhile,
the [former] College President is known to wear a MAGA cap.
We're into diversity, bigly.

AFTER AFTER THE CEREMONY:

Hangin' at the pizza place after the ceremony
Whew! But lots of grading up ahead.

Be well. Stay safe. File your grades by June 1. We'll see you when we see you.
