OC Register
The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 249 newly confirmed cases of the coronavirus as of Wednesday, May 20, increasing the total positive tests reported in the county to 4,742.
It is the largest number of new cases reported at one time since testing began. The county also reported the most deaths in a single day, 10, raising the total number of people in Orange County who have died of the virus to 98.
Seven of the 10 reported deaths were among skilled nursing facility residents.
Of the 4,742 confirmed cases, 514 were residents in skilled nursing facilities and 360 were Orange County Jail inmates.
With 25 of 25 hospitals reporting, there were 253 people in Orange County hospitalized by the coronavirus, with 93 in intensive care units, the daily update said. That is the most hospitalizations the county has reported in a daily update.
The county revised its testing count of 115 from Tuesday to 1,119 – it had noted a technical problem in the reporting that day. The Wednesday report also noted another 775 tests in the last day bringing the cumulative testing total to 86,694 in the county of 3.2 million people. (continued)

State has conducted nearly 25% more tests this week, but positive percentage drops
Half of California’s days with 2,000 or more new cases of COVID-19 have come in the past eight days, but so has significantly ramped-up testing for the deadly new disease.
County health departments around the state reported more than new 2,000 cases Wednesday for the second straight day and fourth time in the past eight days. The statewide total climbed to 85,957, with 11,594 of those confirmed cases in the Bay Area, according to data compiled by this news organization.
The state’s seven-day average of new cases is near its highest of the outbreak, averaging more than 1,850 each day, second only to a three-day stretch two weeks ago where the average climbed as high as 1,872. Deaths, however, have plateaued since their mid-April peak, down to about 75 new fatalities per day.
That disparity could be attributed to an increase in testing....
