UC Irvine Walkout - March 4, 2010

Jason just sent us some of his pics of today's events at UC Irvine.

And our own Red Emma was there!

Evidently, the following statement was sent to UCI students this morning:

A Statement by the UC Irvine Academic Senate Cabinet regarding the events of February 8, 2010
The events surrounding Ambassador Oren's February 8th speech on campus has placed UCI in a world-wide spotlight. In the wake of extensive editorials, letters, phone calls, and e-mails to offices and individuals on campus, the Academic Senate would like to reaffirm the fundamental principles by which we operate. These values at UCI include open access to information and the opportunity to engage in lively debate within a context of mutual respect. The UC mission statement says "the distinctive mission of the University is to serve society as a center of higher learning, providing long-term societal benefits through transmitting advanced knowledge, discovering new knowledge, and functioning as an active working repository of organized knowledge" (UC Academic Plan 1974-78). The open exchange of ideas is a crucial component of building knowledge and understanding. And because public service is one of our three main goals, UC venues serve as valuable public resources and community gathering places. The UCI Academic Senate takes seriously its obligation to help protect UCI as a place where all campus groups have equal access to campus facilities, where they feel free to invite speakers to express their perspectives, and where others with opposing views have an opportunity to express their ideas. In order to realize these goals, we must safeguard invited speakers' ability to deliver their speeches and protesters' ability to protest in appropriate ways (i.e. stating a contrary position without preventing the speech from proceeding).

Our system of shared governance gives the Academic Senate, the representative body of the university faculty, the power to exercise control over academic matters (such as courses, admissions and degrees). Although the Senate doesn't have direct authority over the protection of free speech on campus, our Council on Faculty Welfare is charged to "advise the Chancellor and other officers of the campus administration on matters concerned with the faculty's welfare, diversity, academic freedom..." In light of this charge, the UCI Council on Faculty Welfare, Diversity and Academic Freedom has developed the following statement:

Council on Faculty Welfare, Diversity, and Academic Freedom (CFW) Statement The Council on Faculty Welfare, Diversity, and Academic Freedom (CFW) endorses the principle that the free exchange of ideas, especially on subjects where different viewpoints are passionately held, is central to the mission of the university and must be protected and preserved, and that this free exchange of ideas is facilitated and encouraged by an atmosphere of civility. We endorse the principle that all members of the academic community should have the opportunity to protest the words and actions of others as long as these protests do not disrupt or intimidate others in the expression of their views and opinions.

We may disagree with the ideas and perspectives of speakers at UC Irvine, but as members of an academic community dedicated to the examination and debate of issues of importance, we are committed to creating an atmosphere in which the examination of competing ideas can occur without disruption or intimidation. Recent events suggest UC Irvine can do better in this respect.

We endorse Chancellor Drake's efforts to organize discussions focusing on methods to improve communication and civil dialogue on the campus, and encourage all members of the academic community to support and participate in these efforts. It is important that UC Irvine support actions that allow the expression of different and passionately held opinions while simultaneously creating an atmosphere of free and open debate on contentious issues.

“Travelin’ Man”: One year of John Williams' travel on the district's dime

GOSH, I never seem to go anywhere, what with a job and responsibilities and all.

But wait! Trustee John Williams is, well, a trustee. Plus he’s Orange County’s Public Administrator. Big bucks, man.

And that’s not all! He’s also OC’s Public Guardian!

He must be awfully busy. And responsible! And conservative! I bet he doesn’t get to travel much, nosiree! Not with all those duties!

He's a public servant, y'know.

There’s this guy who emails me sometimes. He knows about John. He knows that John works at the County with those two big, complicated, fancy jobs. He figured John must be up to his eyeballs in busy work.

But he kept hearing about these trips John takes as a trustee for the SOCCCD. Florida, Utah, Sacramento, and Florida again! Seems like he's been trippin' like that for years! But what about all those responsibilities?

It just didn’t add up!

So he put in a request at the district for info about John’s district “travel and training.” (It’s all paid for by the taxpayer, y’know.)

Well, the other day, the guy received some of that information and he sent it my way. Thanks!
Gosh! That John Williams is an amazing guy! Here he is Administratin’ and Guardianatin’ and trusteeinatin’—and yet he finds time to zoom all over the map, going to conferences in Florida, then Palm Springs, then Sacramento, then Florida—and then Florida again!

Here’s some of the info: John’s trips (re the SOCCCD) for one year, starting in January 26, 2008 and ending January 27, 2009:

March Forth: Day of Action (Rebel Girl)

Rebel Girl saw Red Emma off early this morning. It's a big day for the Red One. The Day of Action to protest education budget cuts. Red's the president of his local, representing UCI's librarians and the dwindling pool of hardworking lecturers. (Lecturers are what TAs become when they graduate.) About 40% of UCI's lecturers are facing layoffs. Red was in top form wearing his American Federation of Teachers t-shirt, blue jeans and red high-tops. Cute. Rebel Girl felt badly about waving goodbye. It wasn't that long ago (okay it was that long ago, still) when she and Red would depart to demonstrations together, ready for a day of marching, sitting in and possible arrest for disobedience of the civil kind. Sigh. No such rallies or action planned at IVC or Saddleback today despite the fact that community colleges are suffering too – and indeed, things are hopping at other colleges today. Rebel Girl isn't going to complain too much about the lack of activity because then she'd have to do what good activists must do and look at herself first. She should have organized something, anything. But she didn't. She thinks sometimes that they count on us being too busy, too tired and sometimes too scared. She'll cop to the first two but not the third because she imagines that the last time she was truly scared was when she left home at 15 and that was a long time and another story entirely. Still, Rebel Girl was sheepish when she returned to her coffee and computer this morning. The she found this:
Hi Ms. Alvarez, I hope you remember me (you knew me as S---- P----, and I've since gotten married). I was in one of your remedial writing classes in 2004. I went on to get my BA at UCLA and I'm continuing my education at the law school there. The Los Angeles Times Book Fair is just around the corner, and for some reason it always makes me think of you. Your class had such a big impact on me. I am so happy to be at this stage in my career and my writing skills have helped me every step of the way. I just wanted to say thanks - you gave me a great foundation to build on. Best Wishes, S----- L---- UCLA School of Law J.D. Candidate 2012
The plot line reads like this: remedial writing student at Irvine Valley College in 2004 = UCLA undergraduate 2008 = UCLA Law School, JD candidate 2012. How would this student – a child of immigrants, by the way, - fare today? Cutbacks in government grants? 32% hike in undergraduate fees? Rising "surcharges" for graduate students? Limited enrollment? Her plot line is remarkably similiar to mine (and maybe yours too): El Camino College 1980 (first in my family to go to college) = Cal State Long Beach undergraduate 1984 (Pell Grant recipient) = UC Irvine MFA in Writing 1992 (fellowship). That's what it's all about, folks. Even after the sun sets on today's Day of Action, it isn't over. There's lots more to do to protect the best interests of our students and their future, the one we hope to share with them. Ultimately, it's not enough just to go through our days. We must do more, somewhere, somehow. * Take action links: Courage Campaign Defend Public Education UC-AFT Stand Up for Schools
