Gwen's long goodbye

VP of Student Services, Gwen Plano, is retiring, and it seems like everybody has come out of the woodwork to sing her praises and wish her well. Today, at Irvine Valley College, a surprisingly formal and impressive celebration of Gwenitude occurred. Here are some pics, taken with the Reb's little snap-n-shoot, so the resolution is low. I went wild in Photoshop.

IVC Prez Glenn R held forth up in this corner of the Performing Arts Center, echoing all over the building. For a while there, the speakers had trouble being heard, but everything worked out in the end. Pretty echoey. Like being in a cavern.

For some reason (maybe they gave one, I dunno), a bunch of little kids showed up to be cute and sing. Don't know what that was about. I think maybe Gwen likes little kids or something. They were pretty cute. At one point, one of 'em broke into some kind of dance, the kind that makes me wonder about these darned kids today. Sure, it's cute, but so is watchin' a kid moon dancing or licking the floor. Sheesh.

For some reason, these kids were seriously into that John Denver song, "Country Roads." They warbled that one for a while, missing that one high note ("I belong!") every time, and when it was over, they did it AGAIN, only the rest of us were supposed to join in. Do I know what that was about? I DO NOT. Somebody reckoned that Gwen must be from West Virginia--the song refers to that state--but then I remembered that she hails from way down near the Mexican border, just south of Salton Sea. So it remains a mystery. The world seems increasingly to offer random elements, unexplained.
Or maybe that's just IVC.

They had food. Pretty nice I guess, though, as per usual, vegetarians had to eat the salad, cuz the sandwiches were stuffed with beef and turkey, etc. I think I saw an ear in one sandwich. Why the hell not? But I like those little tomatoes and they had lots of those, too. I'm not complaining.

Crackers, brie. That'll do. Cookies, too.

The Humanities and Languages crowd made a good showing. Here's the Reb with two of our newest hires--who've turned out to be very good indeed. I'm not sure what Brooke was doing with that glass.

Someone said, "Hey, isn't that Dennis Frickin White?!" Yup. There he was, toddling into the building. I didn't notice him at first cuz he's like three feet tall. The Reb asked, "What, were Dennis and Gwen pals or something? I don't remember that." I didn't either. I think I saw a flash of gold or the sparkle of a diamond whilst Dennis smiled my way. He's rollin' in dough, you know. Serious pension dough. And he hardly has a brain at all.

A detail of a wide shot. Glenn is giving Gwen yet another plaque or certificate or fabulous cash prize. That's what people do, I guess.

Another detail. The usual balloons. This time, they weren't blue and red, though. They're branching out.

People were generally pretty smiley, happy. People tend to like Gwen.

Dan D was hanging around out back, I think. Had been teaching "The Bible as Literature," or something like that. The Reb took this pic. Dan looks important. Nice shirt.

Chancellor Poertner was there--he said some really nice things--as were trustees Marcia Milchiker and Frank Meldau, who seemed there just to be there, cuz they didn't say anything. I think I spotted Vern Hodge too, but not Kathie.

Kate Clark was there. She's been busy serving as some kind of SLO maven, I think. Evidently, we're getting that job done, thanks to Kate.

Two H&L instructors plus Santa and one of his elves. I like this shot.

The Reb and Dave F. Nice flowers.

Dennis White and Davit or somebody got into a shouting match about who's taller. Tod Burnett screamed, "Arnold, you naughty pig!" I think Susan Cooper and Susan Corum showed up. They seemed happy.

Summer and Brooke seemed happy to be there.

I can hardly talk, afraid I'll cry
Just can't bring myself to say goodbye.
Don't tell me that it's over
I don't wanna know
If you really want me to
I'll go.
Gosh, we've heard practically nothing about ATEP lately. It's like the dang place dropped off the gosh darned map.
A friend recently sent me this photo. He or she didn't explain.
I think he was trying to say something.

Tuesday afternoon

It was a pleasant day at Irvine Valley College. Great weather. Things really wind down at the end of Spring semester. A loose, sloppy spring. No tension.

It's a purdy campus. Nice trees, grass. Young people.

Some crazy people and fools, too. Fair number of Republicans.

Faculty can get pretty wacky, this time o' year. Yesterday, somebody noticed a big roach on the wall of a hallway inside A200. (That's where they keep the "trouble-makers": Humanities & Languages, Life Sciences, et al.)
So Rebel Girl told me to bring my camera, and, today, I did. "Moses" (Jeff) came along with his staff, upon which he stuck an "Eiffel Tower," to give the viewer some perspective—i.e., to show how gosh darned big this bug is. Voila.

Later in the day, I took this pic. That's one big, ugly bug.
Nobody tried to say that it was an "omen" or a "harbinger" or anything.
I was relieved.
It's just big, ugly bug. A fugly bug. I think I see a face on it. Two big black eyes.

The Ron Paulies were out in force. One of these guys was a cardboard cutout. No, I don't know why that guy is putting that bumper sticker at his crotch. I don't know why they're jazzed about the P man either.

I think that a sign said that these folks were "Vietnamese for Ron Paul." Or maybe it was Druids. Didn't really pay attention. I don't think RP is nearly as cool as these kids thing he is.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. had people out at the college to tempt students into a life of, um, sharp uniforms and Glocks. Some of our students were definitely interested.

Natch, the OC Sheriff's Dept. had a darker presence. Nobody seemed to want to talk to this guy.
He gave me the stink eye, as you can see. I wonder if Mike Carona reads the blog?

The college is pretty quiet, generally. But places like the Writing Center are hoppin' these days.
Check out these pics. Standing room only!

This is the Reading Center. It's busy, too.

The Reb had me take a picture of this sign.

Beth was yellin' at me about something. Dunno.

This is yet another center up there in B300. Maybe the Table and Chairs Center.
The young lady second from the right is a student of mine. Smart.

Later, I snuck up on the Reb. This is our office.

She was conferencin' with a student.

Meanwhile, the folks over in Fine Arts had left "paintings" on the sidewalk near the Performing Arts Center. Love their stuff.
I do believe these works are part of the upcoming IVC Annual Street Painting Project. Very cool.

Pretty dang good.
Nobody was around.
It was like it was just me and graffiti.

I like this one. Kinda punk.

Cool.

I wanna like this one, but I'm not sure about that nose.

This is the best angle I could get on the new "Live Oak Terraces," near the Performing Arts Center.
I wonder who named it that? There are no oaks nearby.
Commencement will be held here in ten days.

Later, back in Trabuco Canyon, TigerAnn says "hey"

Loved this song way back then. Still do, I guess.
I used to lay on the floor with those cheap speakers on either side of my head.

Pass and Go (Inside Higher Ed)
Students at California community colleges may no longer be able to repeat courses they have already passed, if a new proposal aimed at physical education and arts classes is adopted.
The primary faculty group at the 112-college system is backing the plan, which system officials presented on Monday to the Board of Governors. California's colleges have been hit hard with almost $1 billion in budget cuts and revenue shortfalls over the last few years, and will turn away 200,000 students this year. System leaders hope to save money by cutting back on course repeating, resulting in the ability to eliminate some sections and redirect the savings toward overenrolled courses.

The Message Some Parents Want to Hear (Inside Higher Ed)
The Evansville Courier & Press reported that a highlight of this year's University of Evansville commencement was a line from President Thomas A. Kazee -- and the line seemed to be most popular in the sections for attendees who are family members of graduates. He won applause for telling students: "Move away from home and get a job as soon as possible. Your parents love you, but enough is enough."

Board self-evaluation: relatively low self-scoring re "ethics"

We recently reported that the SOCCCD Board of Trustees were about to meet to “evaluate” themselves as trustees and as a board. We snidely suggested that they would give themselves an “A.”
Well, today, Chancellor Poertner directed the district community to the results of the trustees’ self-evaluation. And we weren’t too far off the mark.

Strongly agree — agree — neutral — disagree — strongly disagree

The evaluation comes in two parts. Part I concerns 56 statements—positive ones such as "trustees are knowledgeable"—that the trustees rated from “strongly agree” to “strongly disagree.” Of the 56 statements, only 7 record any disagreement (i.e., “disagree” or “strongly disagree”). That is, in 49 of the 56 statements, trustees scored only "strongly agree," "agree," or "neutral." In the case of most statements, all or most marks were for "strongly agree" or "agree."
     Natch.

Excellent — good — neutral — fair — poor

Part II concerns 8 goals, and the trustees rated themselves from “excellent” to “poor” relative to those goals. (Evidently, trustees, unlike students, can’t fail.)
Of the 8 goals, no trustee gave the board a “fair” or “poor,” although, in the case of 7 goals, some “neutral” votes were recorded.

Evidently, all seven trustees filled out the evaluation, since 7 votes are recorded. (I’m assuming that the student trustee was not asked to fill out the evaluation form.)

     Here are some noteworthy cases:

The relatively disagreeable:

Again, the trustees tended to give themselves high marks, but there were some exceptions to the rule of unanimous or near-unanimous self-congratulation:

Statement 3: the board spends adequate time discussing the future needs and directions of the district.
Strongly agree – 2
Agree – 2
Neutral – 2  (29%)
Disagree – 1  (14%)
Strongly disagree – 0
Statement 16: the board periodically reviews the chancellor’s contract to assure appropriate support and compensation.
Strongly agree – 1
Agree – 3
Neutral – 3  (43%)
Disagree – 0
Strongly disagree – 0
Statement 40: the board expresses its authority only as a unit.
Strongly agree – 1
Agree – 3
Neutral – 1  (14%)
Disagree – 2  (29%)
Strongly disagree – 0
Statement 42: the board regularly reviews its code of ethics or standards of practice and has a policy on addressing violations of the code.
Strongly agree – 2
Agree – 3
Neutral – 1  (14%)
Disagree – 1 (14%)
Strongly disagree – 0
Statement 43: board members uphold and comply with the board’s code of ethics.
Strongly agree – 1
Agree – 3
Neutral – 3 (43%)
Disagree – 0
Strongly disagree – 0
Statement 49: board meetings and study sessions provide sufficient opportunity to explore key issues.
Strongly agree – 1
Agree – 3
Neutral – 2  (29%)
Disagree – 1 (14%)
Strongly disagree – 0
Goals:
The trustees generally gave themselves high marks relative to “goals” also. No trustee selected “fair” or “poor” re goals. The worst marks were “neutral.”
Three goals received 2 neutral votes:
Goal 2: in addition to reviewing and adopting an updated code of ethics policy, the board will discuss and renew commitment to communication protocols and expectations for trustee roles during board meetings and with college staff and community
Goal 5: the board is committed to listening to and considering faculty, staff, and student perspectives and recommendations in local decision-making. It is committed to clarifying its rationale for decisions that may be counter to those recommendations.
Goal 6: the board will seek opportunities to inform administrators, faculty and staff about board roles, limits, responsibilities, accountability to the community, and rationale for decision-making.
Unsurprisingly, the board gave its highest score to statement 33: the board maintains an adequate financial reserve
Strongly agree – 5  (71%)
Agree – 2  (29%)
Neutral – 0
Disagree – 0
Strongly disagree – 0
Later, if I have time, I'll present the results of the employees' survey
