The SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT —
"[The] blog he developed was something that made the district better." - Tim Jemal, SOCCCD BoT President, 7/24/23
.....In this morning's OC Register (Tom Fuentes stands me up for surgery), which lands with a thump about 5:30 in these parts, Frank Mickadeit reports on a story that some in the SOCCCD family already knew: last Friday, on the National Day of Prayer, Trustee Tom Fuentes received a new liver:
.....A couple of weeks ago, I arranged with Tom Fuentes to reprise our garage-sale experience and attend last weekend's famous all-island rummage sale on Balboa Island. I was getting ready to call him Thursday to finalize our plans when I got an e-mail from his wife, Jolene: Dude had blown me off so he could go get a new liver at UCLA. .....She wrote: "Well, a miracle happened today, on our National Day of Prayer. We received an unexpected call from UCLA announcing they had a liver for Tom! It seems the liver was designated for two men and the match was not perfect, so they were able to call us and he had a new liver in a matter of hours." .....Fuentes has been in ICU since the operation, but that's said to be typical, and the liver is functioning. .....He was diagnosed with liver cancer last year and immediately got himself put on the transplant list. He took chemo treatments, knocked it down a little, but it recently came back more aggressively. The insurance company threatened to stop covering him. Then came the "miracle," as Jolene calls it. .....I talked to her last night, and she said a sign of Tom's recovery is that he's gone from wanting no visitors to asking for the likes of me. Summoned by the Chairman Emeritus for a bedside audience! I'm going to have to find the appropriately tacky garage sale vase for the flowers.
.....Over time, teachers grow old, they lose touch with students and their youthful interests and concerns. That’s obvious. Students walk around with iPods and don’t know where Iraq is. They watch American Idol and think that punctuation is optional. .....They’re not like us. .....Gosh, these kids, I don’t know what they’re about anymore.
.....I figured I’d make an effort to figure 'em out. I went to YouTube and typed in the names of our two colleges, thinking that I’d find stuff that “the kids like” and that “the kids are doing” these days. .....I started with our lovely college to the south. Here’s some of what I found:
SADDLEBACK COLLEGE VIDEOS:
1. Saddleback College Commercial .....(To watch the video, click on the pretty blue words.) .....My guess is that a student produced this three and a half minute promotion of SC. Not sure. Highlights: .....• An official-sounding person (a counselor?) says: “The goal of Saddleback College first and foremost is for the students.” .....Evidently, good grammar is not a goal of the college. .....• One student is interviewed. He is utterly unprepared to speak. He says that SC is “a cheap alternative” to four-year universities. .....OK. He decides to list the college’s virtues, reasons to attend SC, and so, naturally, he refers to—the “game room.” We see kids playing pool. We hear balls banging together. “Crack.” .....• Soon, the kid’s tapped out, reasonwise. Then he thinks of something. He says, “It’s a very broad range of topics and ethnicities….” .....What is?
2. Saddleback Commercial .....This one really looks like it was made by a student for a class. The kid must’ve gotten a C or D. Up here at IVC, we’d give ‘im an F.
3. Saddleback College Transfer Day: University of Hawaii .....43 seconds of alleged Polynesian dancing, out between the SC Library and Math. Short and sweet. Nice noisy drumming. .....OK, if this is what the kids are doing, I’m all for it. And educational, too!
5. Beltane Anthro 13 Saddleback College .....I’m guessing this has something to do with somebody’s Anthropology class. It’s two minutes of a woman laughing while students (?) perform some sort of fertility ritual involving sections of pipe (that shoot water), a game of grab-ass, and a doll (I think), tossed into the air.
6. Beltane Anthro 13 Saddleback College (2) .....Another Anthro effort, I think, this time 39 seconds long. Students stand around waiting for something. Rudimentary drumming is heard. Suddenly, a naked guy covered in paint jumps out of a bag and immediately runs away.
.....Sheesh. .....OK, it’s time to type in “Irvine Valley College.” Here’s some of what I found:
IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE VIDEOS:
1. Irvine Valley Upload Recycling .....4:46. Pretty good, for what it is. The host is good. Learn all there is to know about recycling at IVC. .....One problem though: nobody wants to know this much about recycling at IVC. Poor Tony. On and on he goes. “No car batteries,” he says.
2. IVC Math with Rich Zucker .....I’m gonna end with this one. It's an attempt to promote math instruction at IVC, starring Rich Zucker. .....Not bad, I guess, but the target audience seems to be, well, dummies. See for yourself:
.....You don't suppose that Rich understands these kids, do you? .....Nah. Just remember: "p" means "pencil."
.....Most of the graduating seniors at Washington University in St. Louis weren’t even born when Phyllis Schlafly led the successful campaign in the 1970s to defeat the Equal Rights Amendment. But they will get to learn about her at commencement ceremonies next week when the university awards her a doctorate of humane letters. .....Some at the university find the choice offensive, given Schlafly’s career. She turned her opposition to the ERA into a national organization called the Eagle Forum through which she has campaigned against gender bias laws, Title IX, the teaching of evolution, and immigration reforms designed to expand the pool of foreign scientific talent allowed into the United States. .....Schlafly continues to write columns in print and online, and to speak on college campuses nationwide — frequently setting off controversy with her open call for legal distinctions between the rights of men and women. At Bates College last year, for example, Schlafly called for bans on women holding the positions of firefighter, soldier and construction worker and argued that a woman cannot be raped by her husband. “By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don’t think you can call it rape,” she said, according to an article in The Sun Journal. ….. .....Mary Ann Dzuback, director of women’s and gender studies at Washington University, and an associate professor of education and history, said that professors were stunned and angered to learn of the planned honor last week. “The university has completely disregarded the concerns about anybody who cares about full and equal rights for women, who cares about the intellectual quality of feminist debate, and who cares about women’s desire to enter the work force,” Dzuback said….
.....It's 1989, and Ron is not yet "Herr Doktor" Philosophicus; George H.W. Bush is not yet father of The Worst President in the History of the Country; and Chunk doesn't even know what an "academic senate" is! .....But Zeppy the SuperPup is already bounding through the meadows and forests of Trabuco Canyon and making life difficult for many a fine cat, including the magnificent Grayball, the profound Moon Unit, and the amazing "Won't take any shit from this silly pup" cat, whose name I have forgotten. .....Still, I can think of no finer fellow ever!
PUP: Sepl (Zeppy, aka "Waldo") CAT 1: Grayball CAT 2: ? CAT 3: Moon Unit MOM: Mom Brother: Ronald Wife: Kathie Camera guy: Chunk
Note: Little Bro Ron's kids are Sarah & Adam (see below); he's got two new ones besides: Natalie and Catherine!
.....Sarah participated in a piano recital at the Merage Jewish Community Center up above UCI. I showed up, didn't know what to expect.
.....Adam, who's three and a half, looked a little lost, so I lent him my sunglasses. He said, "they're too big." I said, "No, Adam, they're perfect," and I stuck them on his head. He wouldn't take them off after that. .....Sarah, who's five, is a funny kid. She's shy, but she's not. She wasn't the slightest bit nervous standing in front of hundreds of people on that stage today. But if a stranger comes up and says anything to her, she hides her face in momma's dress.
.....Adam and I played with my Nikon in the dark. I turned off (yes, off) the flash and took these pics of him. He took some, too. He loved it.
.....Sarah's very sweet, but she learned early on to use her eyes to communicate something, not sure what. Seems to me she wasn't born a tabula rasa. Nope. Almost from the start, she gave me the stink eye. She's got fifteen shades of stink eye now, some kind of miracle. Almost makes me a theist. A Deist maybe. .....Do have a look at 13 Stoploss, which is on our blogroll at right. There's something special going on there.
These must be tough times for SOCCCD’s own Tom Fuentes, my trustee (representing Lake Forest and environs—I live in nearby Live Oak Cyn.).
“NOW INFAMOUS TAPES.” For instance, Fuentes' pal, Mike Carona, is having trouble suppressing those nasty and revealing Carona-Haidl tapes. According to the Times (Jury will hear Carona-Haidl tapes),
Jurors in the upcoming trial of former Sheriff Mike Carona will hear the now infamous tapes of Carona allegedly conspiring with former Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl to lie to prosecutors. ¶ Among a host of decisions made today, U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford refused Carona’s request to suppress the tapes….
Orange County Treasurer Chriss Street was forced to sell his home to cover more than $1 million in legal bills from litigation alleging that he misused funds from a bankrupt trailer company he oversaw and can no longer afford to defend the case, according to a court motion filed this week. … ¶ The financial difficulties are the latest in a long line of setbacks for Street, who came into office last year as a popular first-time politician. But he quickly encountered trouble stemming from his previous private work as a specialist in restructuring distressed companies, as well as drawing criticism for a pricey office renovation and raising questions about investment choices that have roiled the county investment pool. ¶ The legal claims against Street arose from his oversight of Fruehauf Trailer Corp., a company he agreed to manage in bankruptcy as a trustee in 1998. ¶ Street was replaced as trustee in 2005, and his successor filed suit against him last year, seeking damages of $33 million for fraud, breach of contract and other claims. ¶ The new trustee said Street paid himself $2 million and used the trust to pay for travel to resorts in exotic South American locales, pay his wife, install new wheels and a stereo on a company car, visit a plastic surgeon, pay a speeding ticket and buy ice cream, among other things….
READING LAST. Another Pal o’ Fuentes is the President of the United States, whose Reading First program has proved to be a giant waste of money—and yet another gravy train for his rich cronies. According to the New York Times (An Initiative on Reading Is Rated Ineffective),
President Bush’s $1 billion a year initiative to teach reading to low-income children has not helped improve their reading comprehension, according to a Department of Education report released on Thursday. ¶ The program, known as Reading First, drew on some of Mr. Bush’s educational experiences as Texas governor, and at his insistence Congress included it in the federal No Child Left Behind legislation that passed by bipartisan majorities in 2001. It has been a subject of dispute almost ever since, however, with the Bush administration and some state officials characterizing the program as beneficial for young students, and Congressional Democrats and federal investigators criticizing conflict of interest among its top advisers…. ¶ Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and President Bush have consistently extolled Reading First as a highly effective program. But last year, Congressional Democrats reduced financing for the program for this year by about 60 percent, to about $400 million from the $1 billion it had received in several previous years…. ¶ Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat who is chairman of the education committee, and who has long criticized the program, said, “The Bush administration has put cronyism first and the reading skills of our children last, and this report shows the disturbing consequences.”…. ¶ In 2006, John Higgins, the department’s inspector general, reported that federal officials and private contractors with ties to publishers had advised educators in several states to buy reading materials for the Reading First program from those publishers. ¶ The Reading First director, Chris Doherty, resigned in 2006, days before the release of Mr. Higgins’s report, which disclosed a number of e-mail messages in which Mr. Doherty referred to contractors or educators who favored alternative curriculums seen as competitors to the Reading First approach as “dirtbags” who he said were “trying to crash our party.”
THIS REALLY BUGS US. Evidently, aggressive and ugly bugs are taking over our colleges, including IVC, or so says the OC Reg’s “Science Dude” (Tiny hunter beetles invade OC colleges):
...The big-jawed beetle created a bit of a stir when it made an indoor appearance inside a building at Santa Ana College. ¶ “It was running down the hallway, inside the dean’s office,” said biology instructor Bob Allen … Soon more reports of the creatures began filtering in from other college campuses, and Allen knew something odd was happening… ¶ …The inch-long, black beetles emerge in a ravenous mood from their pupae during warm weather. College campuses might be prime territory for beetle encounters because they are often open areas with an abundance of plants – which attract other insects. He’s gotten reports from Irvine Valley College and Golden West College as well…. ¶ Though largely considered beneficial, especially by gardeners, they can deliver a mean bite if provoked….
