Good start! Now keep going!

Anderson: brief tenure
[UPDATE: 8:00 p.m. Wednesday:
A reliable colleague and faculty leader has offered us the following picture of our sister college to the south right now. Early yesterday morning, he or she or it says, Anderson was roughly ushered off campus, leaving the college in the hands of someone still wearing his newbie name tag and wielding a temp parking sticker. Our source seems to think that administrative leadership at Saddleback is experiencing collapse or failure.
     Trumpian chaos?! Administrative perp walks?!
This cheered us up immensely. —RB]

ORIGINAL POST:

Early this afternoon, there was a buzz on the top floor of Liberal Arts at IVC. People were saying that the President of Saddleback College had been “fired.”
I looked at the email that was the apparent source of this alleged factoid:
Dear Colleagues,

Please note the temporary appointment of Dr. James Buysse as the Acting President of Saddleback College pending further consideration by the Board of Trustees. Effective immediately, please address any college issues directly with Dr. Buysse.

It is my hope and expectation that the entire Saddleback College community will come together and assist Dr. Buysse in his role as Acting President.

Sincerely,

Thomas M. Fallo
Interim Chancellor
James Buysse: temp
“There’s nothing here about Anderson getting fired,” I told the Reb.
“Maybe he’s ill. Maybe there’s some emergency,” I added.
“Well, he does live up in the Bay Area somewhere,” said the Reb.
“He comes down south a few days a week.”
     "Hmmm."
     We left it at that.
But hope was in the air. Heads rolling? Could it be?
     Maybe.
I made some inquiries and learned that some at Saddleback received this email this afternoon (eventually we got it too):
Dear Colleagues,

This morning Dr. Gregory Anderson submitted the following resignation:
Dear Saddleback Community,

After discussions with district leadership, I have submitted my resignation as president of Saddleback College. In these past few months, you have shown me that this is a great institution, with a deep commitment to the students and their communities. Personal circumstances require me to return immediately to my home in the Bay Area, but I will remain forever grateful to all of you for this opportunity to serve.

Gregory
Chance. Fallo
Thank you to Dr. Anderson for his leadership and service, and we all agree with his assessment that Saddleback College is an excellent college distinguished by highly qualified faculty, staff, and administrators who are fully committed to the success of our students. During this time of transition, Dr. Jim Buysse will serve as acting president.

The board of trustees will begin the search for a permanent president for Saddleback College. Additional information on the search process will be provided as it becomes available.

Thomas M. Fallo
Interim Chancellor
Dang. Once again, hope is dashed.
Permanent IVC. Prez Roquemore
I had been planning to post something like this:
Anderson fired?
Good start! Now keep going!
Anderson had been on the job for fewer than six months.
We had heard some bad things about the fellow in recent months. More bad leadership.
Naturally, we do hope everyone's OK.
But firing Roquemore would please lots of folks up here in Irvine.
16 fucking years of that idiot.
     Help.

UPDATE (April 11; 5:00 p.m.):
Got a call from a colleague at Saddleback last night. He or she or it expressed skepticism about this "resignation" story.
"We've heard rumors for some time about @#%," they said.
Another friend who works at Saddleback proclaimed that there was "zero information" about the resignation at the district and college. People down there seem to have no idea what happened. Anderson resigned, I guess. But why? Why all of a sudden? Why not give some account of the reason(s)? Why announce the replacement before announcing the resignation?
     It's pretty odd.
Got a call today from a Lariat reporter. I didn't get her name. She asked me to elaborate on my negatory remarks of yesterday.
     "Nope," I said.
So you hear things. From whom?
     "Not sayin'," I said.

In any case, we here at Dissent urge district leadership to consider firing Glenn Roquemore. It's been nearly 16 years. We've had enough. So can 'im.
—If not, please explain your apparent decision to make GLENN ROQUEMORE the only permanent college president in the state of California.
WTF is up with that? Just what is the matter with you people?

Something rotten in Denmark. A taint is in the air.

It's the bloated rotting carcass of IVC's admins!

They clearly hired the wrong person (multiple reasons) but this time instead of just letting him stack the decks with pals and yes-men to protect him (the familiar corporate male circle the wagons technique), the new sheriff acted - with the board's support. Refreshing. Aren't there a couple investigations going on regarding discriminatory attitudes in hiring and promotion? A pattern that spans the colleges and includes the district high echelons? Couldn't this be related to that? #MeToo

And it also says something about the piss-poor hiring process, etc. Better PLEASE serve on these hiring committees otherwise we will just be here again. They hire themselves over and over again.

Here's the Register's reporting. At least they had energy to find a photo and pick up a phone can call the union. But it lacks enlightenment.

Something fishy in the background check coming back to bite?

Anonymous said...

Is this related to the circumstances of departure from his last position?

Anonymous said...

WHAT were the circumstances of departure from the last position?

They hire the person they always hire: a white male from other institutions dominated by white males. It's like a witness protection program.

Morale on the SC campus is low--for classified, many faculty and some administrators.

Sad when this college has so much to offer.

Ditto to the previous comment on a white male matter.

What was previously tolerated will no longer be, it seems. Now let's see if they apply these standards retroactively.

I am sorry to hear morale is low at Saddleback. Welcome to IVC's reality and its two decades of suffering with its upper administration. We ask again, why do the various boards of trustees seem to be unable to address the lack of enlightenment and stifling conduct from IVC's A100 'command center'?

Well, at least after nearly 2 decades of flagrant violation, they are finally applying at least SOME of HR regulations on Glenn & Co. that's what probably bit the new guy at Saddleback. Can someone spell misogyny? Probably not.

Anonymous said...

Really need to get rid of Glenn!

Roy, we just received a notice that our Saddleback Chief of Police is going; the notice indicated a search for a new Chief.

Anonymous said...

Roy, just saw a posting for a new chief at IVC also.

Anonymous said...

Not also. It was a correction to the announcement about the Saddleback chief. Simmer down.

Instead of sending Kiana to Saddleback, keep her at IVC and send Glenn to Saddleback, let them have a dose of this guy for awhile and see how much fun it is not.

Not sure why every Board of Trustees is unwilling to address IVC's A100 Command Center Mentality issues.

IVC Chief Will Glen's retirement has been planned for some time now.

If you look at the IVC police blotter you will notice it has not be updated since January, about the time Will Glen left. Aren't they compelled to keep it up to date?

"The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education, which can impose civil penalties, up to $54,789[2] per violation, against institutions for each infraction and can suspend institutions from participating in federal student financial aid programs.

The law is named after Jeanne Clery, a 19-year-old Lehigh University student whom Josoph Henry raped and murdered in her campus hall of residence in 1986. Henry's murder of Ms. Clery triggered a backlash against unreported crime on campuses across the country."

"Crime log
The institution's police department or security departments are required to maintain a public log of all crimes reported to them, or those of which they are made aware. The log is required to have the most recent 60 days' worth of information. Each entry in the log must contain the nature, date, time and general location of each crime and disposition of the complaint, if known. Information in the log older than 60 days must be made available within two business days. Crime logs must be kept for seven years, three years following the publication of the last annual security report."

I don't think IVC is in compliance.

Anonymous said...

No, IVC is OUT of compliance. Who took for for Will Glen.? Who dropped this ball?

Related to current investigation involving patterns of discrimination? On campuses and at the district level? Perhaps they cut their losses with this guy before he started acting like all the rest. Or maybe he already did.

If they ever dig into the deep nepotism (read SC VP and Deans hiring their own children) and lack of transparency in major administrative decisions (AB 1725 be damned), many more will be seeking new jobs. Hoping this happens soon as morale is at its lowest. Sadly, the district and board haven't been watching our internal chaos on our campuses.

Anonymous said...

The board believes what is presented by staff and others at the meetings - it's easier that way. How many have you ever seen on the campus on their own? You know, just checking things out? None. Ever.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happened to the nepotism list that went to the board every year? I haven’t seen it for several years.

Anonymous said...

Few trustees wander the campus unlike the 90s when Trustee Fortune prowled the campuses, often stopping in every few weeks to check on the presidents. She also wanted a Trustee Office on the 3rd floor.

Roy Bauer said...

Re nepotism: as a recall, trustee Wagner, an attorney, underscored the legal issues and distinctions involved in the hiring of friends and relatives (e.g., not all hirings of relatives produces conflicts of interest). Those who, at the time, noisily carped and squawked about nepotism seemed incapable of making distinctions and were inclined to fire anyone related to any district employee. Faced with that, Wagner essentially put the ongoing dithering about "nepotism" into hibernation where, perhaps, it has remained.

Bugay got his wife hired AND promoted.

What Bugay did was wrong and unethical.

The VC of HR SHOULD be the most ethical of them all. But not David, not SOCCCD.

Gregory Anderson is a good guy. I worked with him and the job was just not right enough for him.
