The IVC Foundation: situation normal, all f*cked up

A while back, the IVC Foundation—i.e., Executive Foundation Dir. Richard Morley—informed financial aid that the Foundation would be awarding six $1,000 scholarships, as they had in past years, from the “Learning Excellence” Scholarship.
     Oh good.
The scholarship was posted on Stars and a number of students applied. A scholarship committee was formed to review and score all the applications. Students were chosen to receive the scholarships.
     Excellent!
Um, one thing though: evidently, Herr Morley failed to confirm the funding for the scholarship, i.e., whether it would be renewed by the donor.
Nope. (He made this mistake last year with a number of scholarships.)
And so, after the selections were made and students chosen, go-to faculty Kurt Meyer and Kay Ryals were notified by Morley that the scholarships would not be awarded after all.
There were sparks, gnashing of teeth—dark, dark mutterings.
Before Mr. Morley came on board a couple of years ago, all the funding was confirmed before the scholarships were announced.
     No longer, evidently.
* * *

Gosh, what's it like for a student to enter IVC's wacky Scholarship World?
I went to the IVC website, clicked on “Student Services,” then clicked on “Financial Aid,” then clicked on “IVC Scholarship Program.” That brought me to a page entitled,

“Irvine Valley College Scholarship Program
Instructions for 2012 - 2013 Application
DEADLINE: February 22, 2013.”

     Underneath that, this appeared:

I clicked on the “here” link. Nothing happened.
I tried another browser. Still nothing.
     SNAFU.

I'll bet Morley called the donor and they hung up.

Wow another Morley f...kup! Someone please print the blog and send the information to Glenn, that way he can't say he was unaware of what was going on. Either Morley or Glenn has control over the foundation board or they are completely out of touch with the campus (or both). At some point we must have accountability. Our foundation is a joke, but an expensive one.

These are some great questions for the next open forum with the Trustees. Imagine asking Nancy Padburg why the college would inform students that there are six $1,000 available to apply for, then after all the application and selection work is done, say, sorry, there is no money. Yikes...doesn't sound anything like student success support to me.

This is a shame! How can the Board allow this to happen to our students?!

The Foundation should have just coughed up the $6,000 after all the effort the applicants and faculty reviewers put forth.

It is never clear WHO wins WHICH scholarship ever - that information is never printed - just announced. I have sat there for years trying to figure out who won what -and why.

How about some real transparency from the foundation (and the administration). Enough about Morley's five year projections (needing more help of course to achieve such results) and let's concentrate on what results are really being achieved with what we've got.

Good point 7:04, Morley and his staff (total 3)accomplish almost nothing...If we had six people we can double that. It's not more staff we need, it is better management and leadership of the foundation.

Now I hear they want us to form ANOTHER task force to address these issues - but we already did that and most of the suggestions were either ignored or not implemented. I am not going through that again. Someone needs to bring some order and integrity to this process. I was hired tot each - not do other people's jobs. They don't do mine.

Other institutions have a position dedicated to coordinating a scholarship program - we don't. We have this mess instead, a hybrid creature made up of the Foundation and Financial Aid. It doesn't work and hasn't for a long time since we outgrew this original model. The problem is, like with most things around IVC, is that you are not supposed to say they don't work - you are supposed to pretend they do. The problem with that approach is that it stays broken.

Is this a real scandal? I understand improvements may be necessary, but dragging names and entire departments through mud in an online forum is really just crappy. This is a human being, who after leaving your institution (which so many of you clearly want him to do) will need another job. This kind of thing could really ruin a person.

This piling on has got to stop.

Hey 4:53 PM if you are so enthralled with Morley, why don't you go work for him. Oh wait you can't he only hires his friends from the outside. Just another fact you probably don't want exposed. You are right...there is a lot of crap but it resides in A100. Some real transparency would clear up the "mud" you speak of. Let's just get answers to the following:
1. How much did the IVC Veterans receive from last year's Veteran's Gala.
2. How much of the PRO IVC $100,000 "match" amount that was published will actually be distributed?
3. Were six $1,000 scholarships funded for the Excellence Scholarship this year or not?

If you just do a little digging on these three items you will see where the truth is and where is "Mud" is just hiding what is going on in the Foundation.

I dunno 4:53pm is this a real scandal? Students are promised scholarships, but then there is no money. The Veteran's Gala makes $16,000, but the Veteran's never get a dime. The PRO IVC $100,000 match ain't happening.
Morley brags about all these big donors for events that don't occur or they don't produce results. Yeah, I call it a scandal and a damn shame that we allow it to happen to our students and our campus. If you have different facts then let's have'em.

Is there anything reported here that is inaccurate? Do let us know.
Pointing out that an extremely well-paid employee does his job poorly, if such is the case (and if you've paid attention over the last two years you'd know it is) is our OBLIGATION.
But thanks for your input, oh brave brave ANONYMOUS.

A year ago, there were (once again) so many problems with the scholarship program that a committee was created to identify the problems and make recommendations. That committee did its work and issued its recommendations. Then what happened? Members of that committee inform me that those recommendations seem to have dropped into a black hole. All of their work last summer was FOR NOTHING. Nothing's changed. Nothing's been fixed. And we hear nothing from the President or from the Foundation Director.
Here, as in so many other instances, top administration is clueless and worthless. Nothing gets fixed. If people squawk loudly enough, a committee or task force is formed. They do their work. That work gets thrown into the trash.
Heck of a job, Rocky. Heck of a job. There are some top notch young faculty at this college who are starting to look like they'd rather work somewhere else. I can't blame them.

The blog isn't perfect, however, it does serve to bring to light problems and issues on campus that are affecting our students, faculty and staff. Information is presented by various individuals having different views and opinions. You are allowed to disagree. If you feel that facts have been presented unfairly, you have the opportunity to rebut those facts. I have seen information that could not be verified withdrawn if it was deemed to be misleading or false. Facts have been stated about the Foundation and statements made by Morley. If you have other information or other facts, then make your case. There are three simple questions asked by 6:09PM above. Go to Morley yourself and ask about those items and report back. I am Looking forward to your responses.

As a Faculty member and a Veteran, I too would like to know where the $16,000 went. There has been a lot of scuttlebutt about the Veteran's Gala, but I have never seen any information about what happened to the money and how it supported our Vets.

IVC publications always prints a very nice booklet of all of the scholarship winners and the donors. This has been done for years. It's available from Diane Oaks or her staff. It is simply NOT TRUE that the infomation is never printed.

Anonymous said...

I have never seen this. I attend the scholarship award ceremonies and there is a booklet which lists the winners - and then lists the scholarships - but I have never seen a booklet which matches the scholarships to the winners. Do you see the difference? It's always a scramble with lots of twists and surprises and overlooked or underlooked candidates and monies. WHY NOT LIST WHO GETS WHAT? I think it's because they don't really know.

I find that suspicious too and know that it is done that way because they are distributing funds up until the last minute. This is problematic for lots of reasons. At other institutions the recipient's name is right there next to the scholarship awarded. This allows for transparency and oversight. in the past, scholarships have been awarded to those who were not chosen.

Another related issue is the number of scholarships awarded to any one recipient. We used to have restrictions on this to allow for more monies to be distributed to more students - this has been done away with.

Yet another issue to the abysmal outreach effort. Applicants pool is dominated by those already involved in ASIVC and other student organizations as well as DSP&S and EOPS - so the vast majority of the students are not involved. This is a real problem for obvious reasons.

Anonymous said...

What percentage of IVC students apply for a scholarship? They received about 300 applications and we approximately 15,000 students. Who can do math?

I think outreach would be more of a priority. I agree, the kids already with the program apply - the vast majority should but do not.

With all these comments about the Foundation, I was just wondering. Since the Golf tourney got cancelled and the Veteran's Gala has been moved to later in the year, what sort of fundraising is the Foundation doing, if any?
Does anyone know? I believe that the lack of communication with the college (after all it is supposed to be a foundation supporting the college) is one of the major issues that has been raised about Morley and the foundation.
Unfortunately, the foundation board members who are supposed to be representing the college are about as informative as Morley.
They all seem to have taken their cues from Sgt. Shultz.

Anonymous said...

I agree with so much that has been said here. Communication is real problem on all levels. take the piss poor outreach effort - faculty and staff get blanketed with emails - but how does the college communicate with the students it serves? Not very well. Other colleges have newspapers and other strategies - this one (IVC) does not. And yes, at other schools, the scholarship recipients' names are printed in the program next to the scholarships they receive. I have had students tell me that they were told they had received one kind of scholarship only to discover they had another. they don't complain - for obvious reasons - but it's a real problem.

The "new" system is really problematic because of the variations in materials submitted by students -and the lack of verification of data.

What I can not understand is why students who are receiving their education 100% paid for by the government are applying for scholarhships?

IVC student said...

whats even worst is that today all the students who applied (including me) got an email saying that they got a scholarship and an hour later another email came through and it said there has been a mistake, you will be notified later of you actually won. What a great college i go to........ they cant even get their emails sent out to the right people.

Yeah, I heard about that fiasco today which is why I visited the blog -- to see if it was written about!

Books and living expenses which cost far more than tuition.

Goodness forbid students with disabilities and low income students get scholarships; it's not like they face any obstacles in life. -eye roll-

Roy Bauer said...

We haven't heard about this, but we'll look into it.

I don't think that is what 6:57 was saying, 7:58. I think the point being made is that the outreach effort is weak and those students who already plugged into programs for whatever reasons dominate the pool. I worked on the cmte. and can say that that is true. I think it's an error in reasoning to suggest that the only students who are needy are already plugged into programs at the college. I know a number who are not.
