San Onofre nuke power snafu grows: small amount of radiation in the air?
More Leaks, Strange Wear (Navel Gazing)
Since those inspecting the cause of the water leak in a steam generator tube in Unit 3 at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station were there anyway, they decided to take a gander at Unit 2, which has been closed for maintenance and refueling. Leaks and unusual wear were found on several similar Unit 2 tubes, according to federal regulators who add this kicker: those tubes were virtually new.
The feds reiterated that no dangers were present, perhaps a small amount of radiation leaked into the air, and anyone with concerns can monitor the progress via www.songscommunity.com.

It drives me nuts that officials always feel the need to declare, before the evidence is in, that there is "no" or "negligible" or "minimal" danger from such events. They seem to think that any honest admission that they don't know yet will instigate chaos and panic. Then, inevitably, later on they must acknowledge that the leak, the danger, the risk, the damage was greater than they first expected. It's an effective way to cultivate cynicism and distrust, as well as just plain dishonest and foolish.
Of course, I hope the danger *is* minimal. But I'm not betting on it.
