But on Monday, the Associated Press published an article based on e-mail records it obtained under Indiana's open records laws. Those e-mail records showed Daniels, while governor of Indiana, asking that no public universities teach the work of Howard Zinn, seeking a statewide investigation into "what is credit-worthy" to see that similar works were not being taught for credit, and considering ways to cut state funds to a program led by a professor who had criticized him….

Burnett's belated email; Mathews' death a suicide
JULY 16: IVC Pres. Glenn Roquemore has forwarded Saddleback President Tod Burnett’s email to his college community, sent late Sunday, entitled “Condolences and BGS Building Update.”
Unsurprisingly, the recent (July 8) fire at Saddleback College has been devastating:
On Thursday afternoon I returned from a week of rafting through the Grand Canyon and learned for the first time about the tragic fire that occurred on our campus that took the life of student Jacob Mathews. Like you, I was devastated by this tragedy. Nothing breaks our hearts more than the sudden loss of one of our promising students. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jacob’s family and friends, and on Friday we reached out to the family to extend our deepest condolences and support for them during this most difficult time.Saddleback College Student Who Died In Campus Fire Committed Suicide (CBS Los Angeles, July 15)
We all react to loss in different ways and I encourage you to reach out to your fellow students, colleagues, family, and friends during this stressful time. Please know that Saddleback College is here for you, and if you or anyone you know might need additional support, please take advantage of our many campus services….
The fire caused significant damage to classroom 356 in our Business and General Studies Building (BGS). Immediately after the fire was contained, our college and district personnel began working around the clock to repair the damage and minimize the impact to students and faculty. All three floors of BGS are closed, but we expect to reopen the building on Monday, July 22nd and all classes originally located in BGS will resume as scheduled….
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the outstanding leadership and efforts undertaken by many staff, management, and faculty at the college and district in dealing with this tragedy…. A big thank you also goes to Police Chief Chris Wilkinson and his officers and staff for their swift and professional response to this emergency….
…On Friday, some of our college and district personnel met with the county’s investigation team who communicated to us how devastated the family is and asked that their privacy be respected. The team also stressed that no further information can be released until the criminal investigation has been concluded. For these reasons, I am asking our college community to respect and support the county’s process and please only provide constructive support and dispel any rumors while we wait for details….
A 21-year-old student who died in a fire at Saddleback College last week committed suicide, according to Orange County coroner’s officials.
Jacob Mathews, of Lake Forest, was discovered around 7 a.m. July 8 in a classroom in the business and general studies (BGS) building on campus.
The victim suffered second- and third-degree burns and was airlifted to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he died.
Investigators later ruled the blaze to be an arson….

B-Day cards (Bastille Day)

| Again, Sarah: watching vids with Uncle Roy |
UPDATE: A certain reader (I'll call her "Jan") requested that we include drawings provided by my niece Sarah for gifts to my dad and to me.
Happy to oblige.
The image/card on top (above) is for my dad, who drives a blue Toyota truck. Note the deer, the rabbits, and the snakes. The one on the bottom is for me. It depicts those occasions in which I show the kids videos on YouTube. Strictly wholesome stuff, I assure you. Among our favorites: the famous "teasing the dog" video.
Sarah seems oddly aware that we tend to use Apple equipment here in the canyon.
As Jan suggested, Sarah, who seems much older than her ten years, is pretty talented. Without direction from anyone, she's taken up the family tradition of creating "card art." She seems to be very competitive, driven. Not that anybody around here wants to compete with her. But she wants to do the things we oldsters do, which is only natural.![]() |

Original post:
It's "birth" extravaganza day here at the Bauers. Seems like everybody's born in July. So, today, we'll celebrate my dad's, my nephew's and my B-Day. (My bro's B-Day is on the 29th!)
We have a "home-made card" tradition here in Bauer Land, and, usually, Annie and I work on them together. This time, circumstances conspired to prevent that. I made the one below (two sides) for young adam. Annie made the second one (again below, two sides) for my dad.
As you can see, Annie's the one with artistic talent. (But see Sarah's stuff above!)

BGS fire update
—July 14: A quick update on that odd fire/death at Saddleback College’s BGS building:
According to the Mission Viejo Patch (Saddleback College Fire Victim Identified), the kid who died in the fire was “21-year-old Saddleback College student Jacob Matthews of Lake Forest.”
As you know, he died of his injuries at the hospital, not long after the fire that occurred in "room 356 of the campus' BGS building.”
According to Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Jon Muir, the fire damaged only the lecture hall. Further,

Although the fire began near an air conditioning unit, the air conditioner did not cause the fire….Yeah, it was arson. They're not sure if Matthews was the arsonist.

Teddy (found)
Teddy and I have been getting to know each other. He’s a very sweet-natured cat, but, at first, he feared me—owing, I think, to my size (I’m tall). But he’s grown more comfortable with me and with his new home. We now play together often, and he’s happy to roughhouse with me, as long as I’m in a sitting position. So we’re about to the point that we’re good pals.
Teddy is an indoor cat, and I'm pretty good about preventing him from escaping to the wild outdoors. My front door has a sliding screen door. Unfortunately, it is torn/open on the bottom. To prevent Teddy’s escape, I place a large piece of cardboard across the bottom. But that leaves a smallish section in which he can still crawl under the screen. I’ve got a large book for that.
To make a long story short, I neglected to place the book there this morning. So, at about 12:15 p.m., I saw Teddy half way under the screen. I immediately yelled “no” to him. Then I walked toward him. Naturally, that only caused him to go completely under the screen. I was at the door in a flash, but he just ran to the left side of the house. I could have followed, but a cat can navigate that ground much more easily than I can, and so I tried to head him off by going back into the house, out the rear door. By the time I got to where he was—less than ten seconds later—I couldn’t find him anywhere.
I’ve been looking for him ever since. It’s been nearly three hours.
He doesn’t know this area at all. He’s been indoors the entire time he’s been with me (about two weeks).
I’ve looked everywhere for him. I’ve left out food. I’ve banged a spoon against a can of cat food. I've left food around the house, in the house. I’ve left the doors to the house open for him to sneak back inside.
He hasn’t shown.
I’m very much afraid he went into the hills above my house. If so—well, we’ve got lots of predators out here.
Boy am I worried.
Good grief.
So, when things looked desperate, I called her. She made the long trek out here and, within minutes of her arrival, she found the darned guy. Boy was I relieved. You have no idea.
He was hiding in the laundry room. I had looked there before several times, even with a flashlight. You know cats. If they don't want to be found, then, likely they won't be. He eluded me, despite pretty decent efforts on my part to probe through the boxes in that laundry room. Unfortunately, I stopped short of removing the boxes to get to the spots unreachable by my super-duper flashlight.
When Kathie called to him, he offered a meek "meow," and she heard it. Soon, he came out to greet her.
What a knucklehead.
Cats are that way. They find a great hiding place and they'll just sit there, and, sometimes, no amount of calling and luring will get them to reveal themselves. But Teddy has a real weakness for Kathie. Not for me.
I took Kathie to a great little Italian restaurant on the plaza in downtown Orange. Northern Italian cuisine. Kathie's been there. —To northern Italy, I mean.
Good fun.
By midnight, I fell asleep, a mere shell of my former self. I woke up less than that. Today's breeze blew what was left away.

As you know, I acquired Teddy from Kathie. Teddy obviously loves Kathie—he seems to prefer female to male humans (he's nuts about Annie). And Kathie has a real way with cats. So, when things looked desperate, I called her. She made the long trek out here and, within minutes of her arrival, she found the darned guy. Boy was I relieved. Gotta say, I really don't have it in me anymore to deal with this sort of thing. There've been too many dark episodes of loss and catastrophe. They take a toll. I feel pretty used up.By midnight, I fell asleep, a mere shell of my former self. I woke up less than that. Today's breeze blew what was left away.

Objectifying again
"I Wish I Was Your Mother"
When I was in high school and then in college, I was a huge Mott the Hoople fan. One of their better songs (from about 1973) is Ian Hunter's "I Wish I Was Your Mother," one of their quieter efforts.
Yesterday, I bought Annie a mandolin and immediately tried to pick out the mandolin part from this song. McKee uses a similar mandolin part in her version above. Great stuff. (See LYRICS; great song)
Since we're on the subject of the great Maria McKee:
This gal is intense. Check out her guitar playing at the end.
Once again, I'm in love
