Distant storm clouds

Nothin' much happened today at IVC--not at least where I was standing.

Last week, I heard something about some scheme afoot according to which students can take 90 units of courses at our colleges (or was it just at SC?) and then they can transfer over to Indiana U--yes, Indiana U--to take just 30 more and then pick up a Bachelor's.

That sounds pretty wacky. Isn't Indiana one of those states with nothing in it, aside from Chevys and a noisy racetrack? Yeah, that's it. I guess they're real desperate for customers over in those dopey empty states.

Plus shouldn't they run this daffy Hoosier thing past the Academic Senates for their approval? Don't faculty get to have a say when it comes to academic stuff?

The weather sure was nice and I took some pics. Sunlight is the photographer's friend. And distant storm clouds are the photographer's Santa Claus.
.

There was some kinda hoopla out in front of the Student Services Center. (See pics.) I saw smoke, and it turned out to be the usual scorching of animal flesh in the blazing sun. There was music, but I couldn't make head nor tail of it.

I wandered into Helen L, who pointed back at the hoopla and invited me to grab a burger--I guess they were givin' 'em away out there. I said thanks, but then I explained that I was a vegetarian, and she said that maybe they should make sure to have some veggie burgers next time. Somethin' like that.

That was nice.

I kept looking at those distant clouds. And the blue sky.

Have you checked out Tracy's new SOCCCD Update? It's pretty snazzy.

It includes a fine photo of some charity event at ATEP. Here's the pic, showing Chancellor Mathur, Park Ranger Kopecky, Trustee Padberg, a cute little girl, and "Bandit the Biker Dog."

There's some kind of ATEP/Bandit connection--go check out ATEP's website (Here.) I couldn't make out the dog, so I blew up the picture a few thousand times:

OK, that doesn't look like a Biker dog. I could be wrong, but it looks more like a Biker cat.

Will the scandals never cease?

Sunday morning images

Rohrabacher pissed off at anti-war protesters on his goddam lawn
... protesters started shouting: "Bring them home! Now!"

As the pitch rose, the congressman ran out of his grey stucco home. He was barefoot.

"You just woke my babies!" Rohrabacher said....

"I am going to get all of you arrested if you don't leave right now."

"My son is in Iraq!" responded Tim Kahlor, 48, whose son is on his second tour of duty in Iraq until January 2007. "And he does not get much sleep!"

High School girls show freshmen how to wriggle & writhe to the festive aroma of scorched animal flesh
Fullerton Union High School senior Xanat Hernandez grabbed chips and a hot dog, surveyed the crowd of freshmen and zeroed in on a circle of boys.

She marched up to them, her hoop earrings swinging.

"Are you guys excited about the school year?" she asked.

Incoming freshman David Medina, 14, nodded.

"My name is Xanat," she said, and stuck out her hand. Medina shook it. "But everyone calls me 'X.'"

The batter goes into skillets the size of waffle irons, with semicircle cavities in which nine [Danish] aebleskivers can cook.

Erickson-Falcioni demonstrates. She puts a teaspoon of vegetable oil in one basin. She pours the batter and waits, then flips frequently for five minutes.

Flip it. Poke it. Add the jam and powdered sugar, and one of the thousands is done.

"It's a healthy—" she stops. "OK, we don't really worry about that."

Remedial math? But I graduated from High School early and stuff! Plus I'm a math whiz!
At first, Michael Walton, starting at community college here, was sure that there was some mistake. Having done so well in high school in West Virginia that he graduated a year and a half early, how could he need remedial math?

Eighteen and temperamental, Mickey, as everyone calls him, hounded the dean, insisting that she take another look at his placement exam. The dean stood firm. Mr. Walton’s anger grew. He took the exam a second time. Same result.

“I flipped out big time,’’ Mr. Walton said.

Because he had no trouble balancing his checkbook, he took himself for a math wiz....

SUNDAY EVENING IMAGES
(I AM VISITED BY FINE YOUNG WEASELS)

A conversation with 3 1/2 year old Sarah:

Uncle Chunk: "Hi, Uncle Sarah!"

Sarah: "I'm not an uncle. I'm a girl."

Uncle Chunk: "You're a girl? What kind of girl?"

Sarah: "I'm an Iguanadon. An Iguanadon mother."

(Evidently, an Iguanadon is some kind of dinosaur. Sarah's a "mother" Iguanadon, and so she has babies, she says. Sarah showed them to me. They are invisible.

(She's got "friends" too. They're not invisible. They're a bunch of teddy bears and shit, which she drags around with her. Mostly bunnies. Plus a coupla mice.)

Sunny said "let's go outside"

Got home maybe an hour ago and Sunny the cat wanted to go outside, so I went out there with her, and I took my camera (a D70). Took a few snaps.

Sure was a great day. Looks like it'll be a great night, too.

This one looks out toward Trabuco Canyon, I think.

The one below is looking out toward Rancho Santa Margarita. Somewhere back there on that hill is the Ramakrishna Monastery, which was built by Aldous Huxley and his pals in the early 40s.

Sunny noticed the jet before I did. She heard it and looked up. I like to take pictures of small or distant objects and then blow 'em up. They can look mighty weird. Have a good night everybody.

New look (Attempt #2)

You'll be happy to know that, as far as we can tell, Raghu is in a TOTAL SHIT STORM. If you see him, offer him an umbrella and then smile benevolently.

Raghu, good luck with all those turds.

As always, Dissent takes the high road.

Reviews of the "new look" were mixed. Some readers did not like its blankness or whiteness or lack of pizzazzery. (I was aiming at simplicity and elegance.) Some seemed to suppose that the new look meant a change in the graphic content of the blog (that was not our intention).

Some liked the new look, though their views were not expressed in the comments.

I've decided to try another "new look." It involves the same format as the old blog, but with different colors.

So, again, I say:

Let us know whether you like DISSENT the BLOG's new look.

While you're at it, let us know what you like or don't like, what you want more or less of, in the blog.

A "well respected individual"

And he's oh so good,
And he's oh so fine,
And he's oh so healthy,
In his body and his mind.
He's a well respected man about town,
Doing the best things so conservatively.

1. MR. POSTPONEMENT. I'm told that the trial concerning Cely Mora's discrimination civil suit against SOCCCD Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur has been postponed, so it's not next week after all. Postponements of trials are common. We'll let you know when a new date is set.

2. MR. RABBIT. Here's a snap of Mr. Rabbit. I spotted him today near IVC's Facilities & Maintenance office and then approached him. Despite his reputation for garrulousness, he had absolutely nothing to say.

3. MR. CONTROVERSY. Today's Lariat (that would be our two colleges' student newspaper) belatedly reports on Trustee Tom Fuentes' appointment to the Elections Assistance Commission (i.e., the EAC's Advisory Board). Interestingly, most of the article focuses on a "controversy" in Mr. Fuentes' past:
Fuentes was the center of attention during a 1988 election when he admitted to hiring, on behalf of he OC Republican Party, unarmed uniformed guards to be posted at 20 princincts in Hispanic neighborhoods in Santa Ana...Twenty years later Fuentes maintains that he didn't know the guards were to be uniformed, and that he was not guilty of any wrongdoing.

He didn't know? He did nothing wrong? Oh good. I'm glad he made that clear.

Nevertheless,
Lawsuits were filed accusing Fuentes of voter intimidation and the district attorney, as well as the FBI, conducted investigations into the matter. One civil rights lawsuit was settled out of court and the investigations ultimately cleared Fuentes of any criminal wrongdoing.

Criminal or not, Fuentes lost his Orange Diocese gig over this little stunt.

Naturally, the agency to which Fuentes was appointed (by Mr. Bush) exists to make sure everyone has a chance to vote.

Um, so why would anybody want Fuentes on this commission? I mean, aren't they afraid he'll propose plastering "El Migre!" on ballots?
Paul DeGregorio, chairman of the EAC, said that he was confident in Fuentes's support of fair and accessible elections. "He is a well respected individual," DeGregorio said. "He made clear to me that he wants every voter to participate in our elections."
Oh good. As long as Tom made that clear.

Anti-discrimination suit against CEO Mathur finally goes to trial next week

Back in June of 2001, then-IVC President Raghu Mathur, who currently serves as Chancellor of the SOCCCD, tweaked the hiring process for dean of health sciences, physical education and athletics at the college to get the underling he wanted—a twit he could control—and to avoid getting the underling he did not want, namely, Cely Mora, a strong and highly competent woman. (See Teachers, students protest athletic director’s transfer.) Long-time Mathur observers know that the former chemistry teacher tends not to get along with women, especially strong and competent women. (See Mathur vs. women.) As we reported nearly a year ago,
[In 2001,] then-IVC President Mathur hired a white guy from Virginia to be Dean of Health Sciences, PE, and Athletics at IVC. The guy didn't look like much, on paper or otherwise. That was bad enough, but he was chosen, by Mathur, over Cely Mora, a popular educator with a state-wide reputation for excellence in her field. According to the search committee, she was by far the superior candidate. But she's a woman, so Raghu decided to go with the guy with sh*tty paper. Plus the guy's name was "Rodney Poindexter." [The fellow turned out to be unstable.] People were plenty pissed off. Cely decided to take the matter to civil court. She sued Mathur personally for racial and gender discrimination. She had a strong case, as these kinds of cases go. But, to the amazement of many observers, the judge granted summary judgment in favor of [Mathur]; further, he ruled that she must pay Mathur's attorneys fees. The ruling was ridiculous, and so Cely appealed, and, in August of [2005], the appellate court unanimously decided that the original judge's granting of summary judgment in favor of Mathur was improper, as was his decision concerning attorneys fees.
(To see how well Mathur’s twitular white male turned out, see Complaints, suit filed against college dean.) Well, at long last, court is in session--or, rather, it will be soon! The trial--it's a jury trial--is set for next week, from Tuesday through Thursday, in Los Angeles. Today, several IVC faculty and at least one former administrator were given notices to appear (on the first day of trial, I'm told). Don’t know who else was summoned. Stay tuned.

TIMES 6-29-02

Now, was that so hard? At last, IVC's CECs are good to go

Well, as promised (late last week), today, the CECs were ready for classes, and they looked pretty sharp, too.

On Friday, the buildings were still surrounded by a sloppy chain-link fence, piles of dirt, and even mud holes. But, as you can see, somebody's been busy. Not bad.

Wayne (head of facilities), I have one word for you: plastics. Well, no, the word is: grass. My suggestion: try growin' some. Do it right here, around the CECs. People will like you for it. Trust me.

Don't forget to water.

Here's a gratuitous shot of the coffee cart. The campus is beautiful, isn't it?
