A Homecoming for IVC's Emigdio Vasquez Mural

Big doings in the library tomorrow as the little college in the orange groves celebrates the rededication of the Emigdio Vasquez mural.  Come one, come all. There will be taquitos. There will be chips and salsa.  There will be mariachis.  There will be art. There will be remarks.  Don't miss it.

Here's an excerpt from Gustavo Arellano's write-up in the OC Weekly:
Irvine Valley College ain't exactly thought of as a Chicano mural stronghold, but it's one of the many places in Orange County that hosts a mural by legendary artist Emigdio Vasquez--a 40'x8' beauty called La Educación y El Trabajo (Education and Work). And, unlike the rest of OC--which keeps letting the maestro's work fade away or tries to criminalize it--IVC cares enough about its treasure to not only take care of their Vasquez mural, but to restore it, and rededicate it in a ceremony this Thursday....Higgy and his sister Rosemary will be there to talk about their father's work. Also giving a short speech? Legendary Fullerton College Chicano Studies professor Jerry Padilla, making a rare, non-classroom appearance.

See you there! The festivities begin at 3 PM.

Nothing racist about believing in, and supporting equal rights for all LEGAL citizens.

It was a lovely event. (8:03: if you are so certain about your sense of humor, tell your "jokes" with your name attached and see how many people laugh along with you. Dare ya.)

The chicanos get the degrees (presumably in chicano studies), become the scientists and doctors while the caucasians are picking oranges in the background. Please explain how that is not racist. When will colleges be offering degrees in caucasian studies?

Wow, Kudos to IVC for honoring such a great artist. It was an amazing story about the son, Higgy, restoring his father's work and also learning that he helped to paint the mural with his father at the age of 19. Now 20 some years later, he restored the work. So glad I attended this event and I hope IVC continues to do more of these.

The mural is on this big cyclorama under a skylight, amazing location to see it. Must stop by if you haven't seen it yet.

I really like that we honored a local artist in this way. I hope we can do something like this again.

How can they be allowed to put up such a horrid looking painting? This racist piece makes all of the people portrayed look so hideous!
