Send Lawyers, Guns and Money

Red Emma has posted his second review in his new column over at the O.C. Weekly.

This week, OC Bookly's bibliofella reviews Chapman professor Tom Zoellner's new book, A Supermarket in Arizona: What the Gabrielle Giffords Shooting Tells us about the Grand Canyon State and Life in America.

The title, of course, tells you what you need to know but Red manages to connect the dots between that tragic day last year and Warren Zevon, the Costa Concordia and Jean Luc Godard and more. Go figure.

One day Red will return to write for us but until then we'll enjoy his rants on all thing literary and orange.

excerpt:
What famous American asked: "What is government if words have no meaning?"

Multiple choice: a) Warren Zevon b) Situationist philosopher Guy Debord c) Newt Gingrich d) Stephane Hessel e) Jared Lee Loughner.

Okay, only three are even Americans. And if you chose everything but "e" you're forgiven. But as journalist Tom Zoellner, lately teaching at Chapman University points on in his newest book, A Safeway in Arizona: What the Gabrielle Giffords Shooting Tells us about the Grand Canyon State and Life in America, the mentally ill Arizona assassin himself offered this actual interrogative at, yes, a public forum years before he arrived at the now-iconic supermarket parking lot to shoot Giffords in the brain with his Glock 19.

AZ the racist state?

"racist SB 1070" (the Tonkster)

Absolute rubbish!

I guess CA is racist too b/c anytime I've gotten pulled over, I was asked for my ID, vehicle reg. & proof of insurance.

Gosh, 5:13, you seem to be arguing in bad faith. Consider the popularity in Arizona of Joe Arpaio. The guy is plainly corrupt and racist (see). And it's part of a pattern in Arizona. Do you deny this? Must i cite other examples and facts?

That's a very bold assertion about a great Sheriff. Can you back it up?

If it was really true, wouldn't you think he'd no longer be Sheriff?

Also, if he's as unpopular as the article cites, how does he manage getting reelected every time?

We know he has been under the DOJ microscope for sometime now. One would think if they really had anything on this guy, he'd been gone already... So we can deduce they've got nothing, and the bloated govt. with unlimited resources is just wasting our tax money harassing the guy, and smearing his character.

Remember, we have presumption of innocence in America....

Troll 12:54/1:36, you need to learn to read carefully. My point was not that Arpaio is unpopular but that he is popular--despite being corrupt and racist. I provided a link to a portion of an article about Arpaio that lists matters of controversy in Arpaio's regime--with documentation. You don't bother with links, do you? Finally, the notion that Arpaio couldn't be corrupt because he gets reelected reveals that you are stunningly clueless. OC Sheriff Mike Carona was reelected twice despite enormous evidence that he was corrupt, dishonest, unethical, etc. (He's now in federal prison.) During his last campaign, the OC GOP Central Committee at first refused to endorse Carona (but that was reversed owing to highly questionable maneuverings by the corrupt core of the group, led by Mike Schroeder.

Ok, so how is he "corrupt and racist?" Give your readers something to back it up.

4:12, start here: Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez Speaks at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Findings Announcement (Dec. 15, 2011)
Pattern of civil rights abuses alleged in Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Maricopa County: The Justice Department charges that Latinos were illegally arrested and abused in jail repeatedly in the Arizona county and that hundreds of sexual assaults weren't investigated.

Here's Fox News' coverage of the same report: Feds Say Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio Violated Civil Rights

Those articles don't prove anything. All three are biased. The first one by Perez; consider the source. The second & third are Holder's DOJ, who've had an axe to grind against Arpio for more then 3 years. They've been harassing with frivolous lawsuits for a long time. FOX is just reporting the DOJ account, what the wish to tell the reporters. The whole thing's a big scam to take down a white sheriff whose just doing his job by enforceing the law.

That's right, troll, it's a vast conspiracy against white America.

If the thousands of pages of documentation attached to that DOJ report don't mean anything to this guy, it's hard to imagine what would. I'm guessing that he's disposed to reject anything anyone might provide. And you know what that mean, right? Mr. Troll cannot be reasoned with.

BvT, I do wish you'd delete these morons. They can't even spell the name of their hero: "Arpio." They refer to a DOJ report as an "article." I'm sorry, but some of these trolls are just plain stupid. A plot against white people!? Reminds me of the old John Birch Society.

Will Holder finally turn over those docs today? Ya know, that pesky F&F case investigated by Issa. Holder's been stonewalling because he knows his corruption will be exposed again. Terrible thing that we have to put up with a corrupt DOJ.

Yes, and all these cases/scandals like the voter intimidation case that was tossed out by DOJ, only lessen any credibility they have. Our DOJ is very quickly losing legitimacy. So how can we believe any report that comes from them?

You're trying my patience again, Troll. You've got to do more than assume that the DOJ is corrupt. But you don't know how to do that, do you? Find reliable sources that make the case. Sketch what they have. Leave links. Etc.
