Good multicultural vibe at the "Learning Center" celebration/lunch

It was in that whizz-bang room on the top floor of the Library.

The student at left demonstrated his Japanese speaking and bowing. Others told tales of Center wonderfulness and fabulousness.

Irvine Valley College's Learning Center held a "multicultural" celebration and lunch in that wacky whizz-bang room up on the second floor of the Library today. The Chancellor, the college President, the Dean, and the people who run the center (Bob Kopecky and Larisa Sergeyeva--see above) made brief presentations, as did various faculty and students who regularly use the center.

Japanese language instructor Fumiko Ishii had lots to say about the Center and its usefulness.

Karima, Larisa, and Bob (formerly "Park Ranger Kopecky").

Judging by the turnout and smiley faces, the event was a huge success. I had to leave half way into it (to teach), and, by then, there were lots more attendees than seats. A crowd had squeazed together in the hallway outside the room, creating a dynamic that threatened to tear down the back wall and initiate a domino effect that, no doubt, would have resulted in the end of civilization as we know it.

Yeah, but that didn't happen, as far as I know. A good time was had by all.

MEANWHILE, over near B200, I noticed that yet another sculpture had materialized on campus. It would seem to be part of IVC's "First Bi-Annual Outdoor Sculpture Invitational."

The good news: I like it

The bad news: I'm told that a really nice tree had to be removed to locate the sculpture in this prime location. D'oh!

There will be an "Open Gallery Reception & Meet the Artists Walking Tour" on Wednesday, May 13, at the IVC A Quad.

the tutor celebration was very fun, the food was fantastic, especially the FESENJON!

The belly dancer was GREAT.

Trees need a lot of watering and maintenance. Sculptures need nothing. Just think of it as another step of being a totally "Green" campus, Chunk.

I like the sculpture - sorry I missed the belly dancer! They should have advertised her on the website - maybe in that new weekly email bulletin everybody is talking about. That would really boost attendance at events if people knew there was free food and belly dancing.

So who was the belly dancer?

Belly dancing is an ancient art form.

Belly dancing is often made fun of but I am glad that the Tutoring/Transfer/Counseling Center didn't do that. I am just sorry that I missed that part of the show.

Was the belly dancer a student or a teacher?

The belly dancer was outside for multi-cultural day you ignorant morons.

There were TWO belly dancers - one outside at multi-culti day and one at the transfer center celebration.

I am enjoying the statue. Check out the added feature of rocks around the statue added today. They are even, power washing the area all around the statue, looks great!

I think a belly dancer, unless very carefully presented, might send the wrong kind of message.

We are an institution of higher education after all and I would hope that administrators would want to craft a thoughtful, mature kind of program that represents our mission.

6:33 P.M. A clarification-- belly dancing activities were organized by ASIVC outside SSC. These activities do NOT have anything to do with the Learning Center celebration.

In lieu of the belly dnacing, what kind of entertainment was provided at the Learning/Transfer Center celebration then?

The only type who would complain about the "message" sent by a belly dancer is a frumpy feminist.

Entertainment at the Learning Center Awards Ceremony was a group song sung by all entitled "Sign Me Up at IVC" (to be sung to the tune of "It's A Small World".

Anonymous said...

Yikes - "It's a Small World"?

Sounds like they should have had a belly dancer after all - jeez, how high school, no, make that elementary school can you get?

No no, remember a belly dancer would not "represent [their] mission," and we all know what that means.

Did the park ranger serve as the belly dancer?

Believe me, there are better candidates for the belly dancer than the "Park Ranger" (look at Roy's photos from the event). However, he was a good "Park Ranger".

There are certainly better candidates… I’m quite jealous of him staying next to her. Is she single by any chance?

Roy's obituary in LA Times and Register: "we were lucky to have you while we did"
