Jolene

I was at a party last night, and somebody asked, "Whatever happened to Jolene Fuentes?"
You remember her. Tom's widow. She showed up at the SOCCCD after Tom's death (2012) to claim his vacant trustee seat. When she didn't get it, the usual crew of right-wingers across the state claimed that she was robbed. I was identified as one of the robbers. Hilarious.
After that, as I  recall, she and like-minded (i.e., corrupt) Republican pals descended on local (Lake Forest) government. She had her sites on the Planning Commission. (See Whatever happened to Jolene Fuentes? (By hook or by crook: the real Fuentean legacy), July 11, 2014.)

Here's what I dug up about Jolene Fuentes, 2017. Essentially, she did manage to get on the planning commission, where she is currently serving her second term as chair. She's now running to renew her seat on the Lake Forest Home Owners Association (II), Board of Directors:

I came across this goofy video, featuring Jolene:

She’s on the steering committee of a Lake Forest anti-recall campaign.
She’s endorsed the usual crew of California Republican candidates.

Jolene's interest in city planning is interesting.
Tom was involved in planning too, years ago. More about that in my next post.

And whatever happened to Tom’s son, TJ?
A year ago, he ran successfully for a seat on the OC GOP central committee. He's 2nd Vice Chair. He's also on the “endorsement committee.”

I found him on the roster for the South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board and board assistant/consultant (there’s a roster).
Like his mom, TJ is on the board of directors of a Home Owners’ Association, namely, the “Four Fours Association”: “Nestled across from the Upper Newport Bay Regional Park and with units having views of the Upper Newport Bay, the Four Fours Association established in 1962 is one of the oldest community association's in Orange County.”

OC: A Literary Field Guide in Coast magazine

More good news for Rebel Girl's published sabbatical project, this time in the glossy pages of Coast magazine:

excerpt:
In February, Berkeley-based Heyday Books released “Orange County: A Literary Field Guide,” an anthology of writing about OC compiled by husband-and-wife team Andrew Tonkovich and Lisa Alvarez.Tonkovich and Alvarez met at Long Beach State in the ’80s and have been together for more than 30 years, 20 of which they’ve spent in Orange County. They both grew up in Southern California, hold MFAs in creative writing from UCI, and are writers, professors and political activists.
The collection offers a rich glimpse into history, with more than 400 pages of journalism, poetry and fiction, including previously published work by Joan Didion, Philip K. Dick, Steve Martin, Michael Chabon, E.L. Doctorow, Susan Straight and several UCI alums.
“Our fondest wish,” write Alvarez and Tonkovich in the anthology’s introduction, “is that our literary field guide helps you find where you are, where we are, where others have been and also perhaps where we might go from here.”
The editors spent five years researching and assembling the collection. Brief introductions to each piece offer context and a deeper understanding of each author’s place in the larger constellation of literary SoCal.

Trumped again

U.S. Crackdown on For-Profit Schools Is Said to Go Idle (NYT)
The Education Department’s sweeping crackdown on fraudulent practices at for-profit colleges has stalled under the Trump administration’s appointees, several current and former department employees say.
Current and former employees, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, said tight restrictions have been put on staff members scrutinizing for-profit institutions, constraining their contact with other state and federal agencies without high-level approval — a contention a department spokesman denied.
Some state officials who had collaborated with the Education Department in bringing legal cases against for-profit schools say their joint work has ground to a halt. They also say they are troubled by an apparent slowdown in granting debt relief to students who were cheated.

During the Obama administration’s second term, the department put both financial and regulatory muscle into the policing of a sector that was frequently criticized for deceiving vulnerable and poor students about the cost and benefits of signing up to get a degree.
Ms. DeVos has brought aboard officials who have worked in the for-profit college sector and have expressed skepticism about the Obama administration’s aggressive regulation and enforcement. Supporters say that for-profit colleges provide a ladder for the most disadvantaged students and that any misdeeds represent a tiny fraction of the industry….

The Pussy-Grabbers, youth division

After a Generation in Decline, OC's College Republicans Are Back and Stronger Than Ever
(Denise de la Cruz, OC Weekly)
… "I'm probably the most hated person on campus. . . . I love it," says Ariana Rowlands, a UCI senior who's already a GOP force at just 20 years old. The president of UCI's College Republicans has more than 31,000 followers on Twitter, on which she does everything from wittily debate tweeters to post pictures of herself in a star-spangled bikini. She's a contributor to Breitbart and Red Alert Politics, a youth website sponsored by billionaire Philip Anschutz. Last year, the David Horowitz Freedom Center invited her to speak, introducing her as "the future of conservative activism."
. . .
Loves to be hated; loves the Donald
Chris Boyle says Cal State Fullerton's chapter of College Republicans, CSUF Republicans, has grown to about 40 members since he restarted the chapter last semester after transferring from Orange Coast College, where he was a member. "At times, we've been able to work with groups like the College Dems to co-host debate-watch parties and other bipartisan events," he says. "But we also had an incident where a professor physically assaulted one of our students during a demonstration."
. . .
At OCC, students from organizations such as the Feminist, Pride and Planned Parenthood clubs received unsolicited visits to their meetings by College Republicans in February. When club leaders and advisers asked them to leave, the GOPers refused. They cited California public forum rights and said they were merely trying to foster healthier relationships between opposing clubs on campus. Liberal club members believe such unannounced drop-ins were petty tactics to antagonize, intimidate and distract them. In one meeting the Weeklyattended, [OCC College Republicans president Vincent] Wetzel showed up, then left and walked away with an older man in a suit….

We're dyin' here, man

Classic plastic
Went to the "recognition celebration" shindig today (see flier below). As I understand it, the trustees got sick and tired of enduring the endless parade of "recognitions"—mostly folks getting prizes for having received prizes—so now the colleges are taking some of this boffo prize action to their campuses in order to create stupid photo ops for Glenn and Tod to prove that they're doing a great job.

They're not. They suck, and everybody knows it. Somehow, Glenn and Co. got the Accred morons to say that the folks at IVC sure do work well together. Something like that. Total bullshit. At IVC, somebody'll mention this and folks will just smirk. Freakin' IVC.
100% styrene
The Reb was just told late last week that she'd be receiving one of these recognition thingees. (One time years ago, she mentioned that she'd once received one of these Recogno-Prizes from Raghu Mathur, and so Mathur, a guy who updates his Enemies List daily, said, "I gave you no such thing." So the Reb went to our office and dug up the dang thing. Showed it to Mr. Goo. "Oh," he said.)
All things considered, it was clear that Reb was obliged to show up for this thing—somebody had nominated her, after all—and so she needed to grit her teeth and do the stupid photo smile with Mr. Plastic. Mr. Anti-Intellectual. Mr. Trump-Voter.
     Glenn.
So, anyway, we showed up just before noon, and Reb got waylaid by old friends, so I just found a seat way in the back. Reb eventually joined me in the cheap seats.
"Smells like McDonalds," she said, as she sat down.
We espied the usual Feed Bag operation way to the left. I think I could see grease smoke climbing above it. Yep, people were linin' up for burgers and whatnot. Eat like you mean it, I guess.
"Is that beer?" asked Reb, pointing to some suds in a plastic cup.
Glenn then ran up and asked Reb if she could stay long enough to get her prize. (He acted like I wasn't even there.) Earlier, she had told him that she's got to teach at 12:30, so could you put her first? (Another Prize Winner in our School couldn't make it cuz she was teaching a class. She only found out about her part in the proceedings like yesterday.)
So how come the Reb, and this other gal, only found out about their recognition invites within the last day or two? What's up with that? Doesn't anybody organize and plan on this campus?
Later in the day, we ran into a kid who got one of today's prizes. She was all happy. Nice kid.
"One thing though," said the kid. "I only heard about this thing last night at 11:00 p.m."
     "Really?" we said.
     Yeah, really.
     We're dyin' here, man.

UPDATE:
May 24, 2017
A day or so after this event, the college put up a slide show. See here.
Guess what? There's no pic of the Reb!
     Oh my.
Wait for it!

I am worried about my grade.

It's that time of year.

Carry on, folks.

Conservative voices Republicans can't hear

Trump: "uniquely unfit"
As this column has said before, the problem isn’t that [Trump] does not know this or that, or that he does not know that he does not know this or that. Rather, the dangerous thing is that he does not know what it is to know something.
. . .
[I]t is up to the public to quarantine this presidency by insistently communicating to its elected representatives a steady, rational fear of this man whose combination of impulsivity and credulity render him uniquely unfit to take the nation into a military conflict.
George Will, May 3

"The country ... believes in universal [health] coverage"
"Whether it will end up single-payer, like in the Canadian system, or not, I'm not sure, but I will guarantee you this: … Within a few years there won't even be an argument about whether or not government has an obligation to ensure that everybody gets health coverage."

Roy's obituary in LA Times and Register: "we were lucky to have you while we did"
