Irvine Valley College Commencement 2019: a big, sunny day

Commencement speaker: Chapman U President Daniele C. Struppa
He offered four "messages" for students
His Italian accent charmed the crowd, natch
Good speaker.
Brief.
(His wife, Lisa Sparks, yet another academic, is a Republican "school choice"
candidate running against our current anti-Trumpster Rep, Katie Porter.)
(For an even chirpier take—if such can be imagined—see also IVC's Facebook Page or IVC Flickr)

Lots of happy students

On the periphery of IVC's curiously named "Live Oak Terrace."

Rebel Girl had a prime seat with the faculty, so she interrupts Roy's roving with a few of her pics:
Mark McNeil says farewell after 40 years

Carissa (Film Studies) turned down NYU and is waiting to hear from USC.

Emily worked in the Writing Center and starred as Janet in this year's Rocky Horror production.  —RG

Back to Roy's roll:

Always lots of little kids at these things.

Dean's daughter, another cutie

Mark's been teaching at IVC since 1979. (As a full-timer since 1980.)
I owe him a case of beer. Why? We've all forgotten.
Popular Spanish instructor and textbook author, Jeanne Egasse, was here at IVC from the very beginning
(1979, when the place was called "Saddleback College, north campus"). She is also retiring after 40 years.
Good luck, Jeanne and Mark! [PS: I might've jumped the gun in the case of Jeanne. Maybe she hasn't
retired just yet.]

Jeanne in action

Yep, some dogs were in attendance.

This year's effort was well-received

The VPI was a veritable ray of sunshine

AFTER THE CEREMONY:

A rough year for so many pictured here but it's hard to be cynical in the face of such hope.
Besides, we're still here! —RG

Cessa and friends

Brittany's little girl is seriously cute

Seriously smart, too. Scary smart.

Some of the Humanities crowd (English, History, Pre-School)

In the halls of the Humanities. Note the Canadian and Mexican flags. Meanwhile,
the College President is known to wear a MAGA cap.
We're into diversity, bigly.

The Reb and I share an office. Very rock 'n' roll, punk, alternative

Virginia's office up in Liberal Arts. Her star shines brightly. She's largely responsible for the college's
acclaimed literary journal, The Ear:

IVC's famous (infamous) Commencement Crossword Puzzle, created by Rebel Girl.
Very cool

AFTER AFTER THE CEREMONY:

Hangin' at the pizza place after the ceremony

Whew! But lots of grading up ahead.
We enjoyed opining about IVC's new "lactation pod," costing the college a reported $11k

Have a great summer!

HAVE SOME FUN

"You idiots!'

‘You idiots’: Bill Nye’s fiery message to leaders stalling on climate change
(Washington Post; science)
...“Grow up,” he said, injecting some more language that wouldn’t fly in public broadcasting. “You’re not children anymore. I didn’t mind explaining photosynthesis to you when you were 12. But you’re adults now, and this is an actual crisis; got it?”
Nye took to [John] Oliver’s show to teach his audience about global warming and its possible solutions — namely, the Green New Deal and carbon pricing (in his words, “when something costs more, people buy less of it. Safety glasses off. That’s it.”).
Nye appeared to endorse the trademark legislation proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), telling lawmakers they needed to do something and chiding those who have said the Green New Deal is prohibitively expensive. As he spoke into the camera, the globe continued to burn.
“There are a lot of things we could do to put it out,” he said. “Are any of them free? No, of course not. Nothing’s free, you idiots.”
His harsh tone surprised some — one viewer wrote on Twitter that he “just heard Bill Nye swear and it’s blowing my mind.” Another observed, “Global warming is so bad that it now has Bill Nye the Science Guy cursing us out to fix it.”
Even [John] Oliver, as his show ended, gasped, “I think we’ve all broken Bill Nye.”....

The Adjunct Underclass—and other intolerable realities

A Moving Read About the Adjunct Underclass
(Inside Higher Ed)
Thoughts on a new book by Herb Childress
By John Warner

Normally the only contingent faculty career that could bring me to tears was my own, but the latter stages of The Adjunct Underclass: How America’s Colleges Betrayed Their Faculty, Their Students, and Their Mission by Herb Childress had my eyes filling sometimes with sadness, sometimes tinged with anger.
In earlier times that anger might’ve been rage, and more plentiful than the sadness, but there is a passage in the latter third of the book that struck me as true and I could not muster the necessary emotional resistance to be angry, rather than sad:
“There will always be teachers, sure. But the idea of ‘the faculty’ is as dead as the idea of coal; it’ll carry on for a while because of sunk costs and the gasping demands of those still left in the industry – but really, it’s gone.”
Looking back through my posts on this site I see a clear evolution in my own attitudes towards these issues. Early on I see someone eager to fight the trends, attempting to rally opinion around shared values and mutually beneficial goals.
Eventually, I came to realize that tenure was already dead. In fact, for most of us, it had never been alive…. (continue)

UCI's Gillman: "I also urge our faculty in relevant disciplines to increase teaching and research on the rise of white nationalism and violent extremism..." (Rebel Girl)

UCI Chancellor Gillman speaks at IVC 2017 Commencement

UCI faculty and staff received an email from Chancellor Howard Gillman on Monday, written in response to the shooting at the Poway synagogue. It begins:
"Last Saturday – the final day of Passover – hate visited the Chabad Poway synagogue during morning worship service. In the wake of the ensuing gunfire a life was lost, several people were wounded, and many more traumatized. Like the mass shooting at the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue last October, this attack was a hate crime motivated by anti-Semitism, which is dramatically on the rise in the United States and around the world.
One hate crime is one too many. It is troubling that so many faith communities have been affected by hate. Some of these attacks span from arson at a mosque in Escondido, to a temple defaced in Irvine, to three historically Black churches burned in Louisiana. Such attacks – and others – have a common purpose, namely to terrorize the targeted community and divide our society.
It is critical that we stand together as a diverse campus community while supporting those communities most directly affected by acts of hate..."
After directing readers to on-campus resources and programs affiliated with UCI's Confronting Extremism Initiative, Gillman, a featured speaker at IVC's 2017 commencement concludes:
"I also urge our faculty in relevant disciplines to increase teaching and research on the rise of white nationalism and violent extremism in our region, our country, and around the world..."
It was, quipped red Emma, inspiring enough to forgo early retirement and keep teaching.
It was, of course, an example of forward-thinking leadership in a time of growing crisis.

Outside the Chabad of Poway Synogogue. The shooter, a high achieving nursing student at CSU San Marcos, had no history of violence and legally purchased the AR-type assault weapon used in the attack.  The only indication the assault was imminent was an online manifesto he published shortly before.

Meanwhile, Turning Point USA seems to have established a regular presence at Saddleback College and has begun outreach efforts at IVC. Some of the materials used and distributed by them include:

When asked about the nature of Turning Point USA, the O.C. Human Relations Commission  directed Rebel Girl to this article on the Southern Poverty Law Center website:

Read it and uh, weep. Or shake your head and sigh. Or do what Chancellor Gillman suggests: teach it.

That's all for now, folks. Isn't it enough?

Sending this one out to Gary.

No, that THAT Gary, the anonymous one who lacks the courage of his convictions because perhaps they are not really convictions but something much more sordid, you know what she means? Geez, an anonymously sourced paper wouldn't be acceptable in higher education anywhere but Rebel Girl guesses we are going for the lower education bar here. Oh well.  Anyway, Rebel Girl means that other Gary, her most brilliant friend and recently departed. She loved him and Gary, he loved some Jonathan Richman.
