IVC Commencement 2017

It was an overcast afternoon but the usual high spirits of the happy graduates and their proud families carried the day despite the expected gaffes ("graduates of extinction") and usual casual insults from the podium ("Irvine Valley College was probably not your first or even fifth choice..." Ouch!) With trustees like that who needs Betsy DeVos?

Rebel Girl was on her own today with her Nikon.  She did what she could.

Getting ready.

O Canada!

Runner-up for favorite pic of the day. Dig that Mexican flag in the grad's hand.  "It's a beautiful flag, " Rebel Girl told her.  The grad agreed.

Late!

Off to Cal State Fullerton to become a guidance counselor.

A festive atmosphere in the lounge where retirees like Steve Rochford were the subject of much affection.

Steve and Ted's excellent adventure.

Brenda says goodbye - with Rebecca.

Steve and Roy, retirees both.

Steve!

Everyone should have a bull horn.

Steve Lee dropped by to make sure all was well.

UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman. When he spoke, everyone playing Commencement Bingo
got to circle "reference to current political situation."

Pride.

Congratulations everyone!

Huh? Kushner did WHAT?

Russian ambassador told Moscow that Kushner wanted secret channel with Kremlin
(Wash Post)
By Ellen Nakashima, Adam Entous and Greg Miller
Sergey Kislyak reported to his superiors in December that Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, asked him about setting up a communications channel between the transition team and the Kremlin using Russian facilities in the United States, an apparent move to shield pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, according to U.S. officials briefed on intelligence reports….

Foul Pond: the Trumpist conspiracy mongers

The Demented Detectives on Seth Rich’s Case
(NYT)
Anna Merlan

Excerpt:
...The biggest fish in this foul pond … is Sean Hannity of Fox News, who recently latched onto the Rich story, promoting it on his popular prime-time show and on social media. Mr. Hannity, a fierce Trump partisan, seemed aware that his speculation about Mr. Rich’s death could deflect attention away from the multitude of disasters dogging the White House and at his own scandal-plagued network. And he surely knew that the story would play well with his audience, which was eager to see the news about the Trump team’s Russia connections as a mainstream media smoke screen and Mr. Rich’s murder as the real fire.
After vigorous public shaming — including a Washington Post op-ed essay by Mr. Rich’s parents — and pressure from his show’s advertisers, Mr. Hannity announced that he would stop discussing the murder (“for now,” he added). Fox even retracted a story from its website. He’s still tweeting, though, pledging that he’s close to finding “the truth.”....

Bullet Dodged

Wednesday, May 24, 2017 12:55 PM

This announcement arrived in all our email boxes this afternoon and word has it the SOCCCD (which has suffered enough) has dodged a bullet.

• Sent districtwide to all employees

• Chancellor’s Search Update
• The SOCCCD Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, May 23 in a closed session meeting to discuss items related to its search for and selection of the District’s next Chancellor. The board recently interviewed several candidates that were forwarded from the initial search committee.
• After a thorough review, the board concluded not to pursue further consideration of these candidates. The current search will be closed and the board will consider an extension of the current Interim Chancellor at its June 26 board meeting.
• SOCCCD Board President Tim Jemal stated, “The board of trustees appreciates the work of the initial search committee. This is a critically important position with an immense amount of responsibility. We will restart the search with the expectation of finding the best possible Chancellor for our District. It’s a priority for the Board to have an Interim Chancellor in place who can continue to make important and positive changes until a permanent Chancellor is selected.”

The Ear comes of age: 21 issues!

Professor Virginia Shank welcomes the audience.

Last night saw the publication party for IVC's literary journal, The Ear.  It was a grand evening distinguished, Rebel Girl thought, by the shy and shining pride the readers took in their work as they shared it with the audience. Take a look and see if you can see what she saw in their faces. Congratulations to all.
