On Exhibit: Dada at IVC

This is not a drinking fountain.
A rarely seen Marcel Duchamp readymade is currently on exhibit at Irvine Valley College.

Created a few years after Duchamp's seminal "Fountain" (1917), this heretofore unknown work was thought to be lost until its recent rediscovery and installation on the second floor of  the B-300 building.

The exhibit runs indefinitely.

Marcel Duchamp. "Fountain." 1917.

Copies of Duchamp's "Fountain" can be spotted, occasionally, wrapped in plastic and all, in the BSTIC and A-200 men's restrooms. And if you add to that the incredible proliferation of used paper towels overflowing the bins and scattered all over the floor in these facilities (now that the A-400 restrooms no longer exist) ...now that's a true surrealist scene....

Anonymous said...

I believe I read something about added efforts to keep restroom facilities in A-200 in better condition because of the absence of A-400. I have not seen any evidence of that. By midday it's grotesque. People walks in and walk right and out.

Anonymous said...

I now leave campus and use the restrooms at a nearby restaurant. They seem to be able abide by the health codes, unlike IVC.
The restrooms on this campus are disgusting!
Wake up John! Wake up Davit! You to get this S..T taken care of but evidently you can't or won't.

Roy Bauer said...

At yesterday's Academic Senate meeting, several faculty noted that complaints about the failure to keep campus restrooms and classrooms clean (esp. in building A200) go back many years. And so one asks: what is it about Edwards and Administration that they just can't seem to accomplish what so many others accomplish routinely? Some senators, at any rate, are fed up. Truly and rightly FED UP.

Anonymous said...

I challenge Glenn to walk into both the men and women's restroom at, of say 11:30 on a Tuesday. John and Davit too.

Anonymous said...

Edwards is fully aware of what is happening here. He must! This is a shrewd, vile man, who will, if rumors are to be believed, lay the blame for this and all of his many other problems squarely at the door of Davit; who received the V.P. position he coveted and now prays to fail.
Strange bedfellows.... indeed!
Hasn't anyone noticed the lack of custodial services since this ruckus over the shift changes in Edwards area? Could this be the reason why?
I sometimes teach on the weekends and have noticed over the years many more facilities staff wandering around doing God knows what as they aimlessly drive their little carts, including custodians, who probably should be working when faculty, students and staff are on the campus? Not when tumbleweeds are blowing through.
Seems to me there are bigger problems in F&M than we may know.

Anonymous said...

I saw what I presumed to be a parent wheel her grown daughter (in a wheelchair) into the A-200 women's restroom only to exit moments later visibly disturbed. I invite the top administrators to use a wheelchair and visit the facilities in A-200. See what THAT experience is like. Go ahead. I dare you.

Anonymous said...

YES!!! John changing the custodians shift because he felt it wasn't fair just to shift the days is part of what is and will continue to happen on this campus. These complaints are an example of the reason why John received his grievance which I heard has now gone to the president's desk.

Jeff H. the assistant Director is in charge of the plumber, instead of fixing the problem, the plumber puts a bag over the sink, toilet, urinal, etc.... as longest you attend one of Jeff's Bible studies classes on wednesdays in the BSTIC building, you can do whatever you want!!!

Anonymous said...

6:38 A.M. On the weekends, all they do is drive around like a chicken without a head, they have no bosses, they don't do any kind of work, the painter brings his wife and child to the campus, well having workers on the weekend was John's idea, good job John....

Anonymous said...

I heard work orders to fix the fountain had been put in months ago....Hey Mr. Edwards sounds like your not doing your job.

Anonymous said...

Did you ever stop and think that perhaps they are waiting on parts to fix the problem? Seems like some abusive members of our community destroy the fixtures as soon as they're fixed. There ought to be a security person assigned in every bathroom.

Anonymous said...

classy. from a urinal to bible study in one short paragraph. we are so much better than some of these ridiculous, rude and mean spirited posts. classy.

question: while we take photos of bathrooms and faucets and whatever else and point fingers every which way are photos also taken in hallways when students are waiting for faculty arrive for their office hours yet may never show? do we address and post here that students do not receive return emails when repeatedly attempting to reach their professor? it seems time that if we slam some we should be possibly slamming many. just wonderin'

Roy Bauer said...

3:53, We can't report on something we don't know about. In my school, the faculty excesses of which you speak or not in evidence, near as I can tell. Are you referring to your own area of campus? Please specify.
With regard to the "messy restrooms" issue: members of the college community have been complaining about that problem for MANY YEARS. For whatever reason, some institutions manage to keep their restrooms reasonably clean, but, at least in the case of A200, that standard seems unattainable by the responsible parties here at IVC. Now, why wouldn't we report that endless state of affairs?

Anonymous said...

I agree with 9:57. Every time I've had to use a restroom I can't help but notice the chronic state of vandalism. I think it's time campus police begin hiring and placing bathroom attendants to start holding the hooligans accountable.

Yes, it's been way too easy, and for a long time, for the blogederos to use F&M issues to point fingers at admin. It's low hanging fruit for those monkeys, indeed. Has anyone seen the way some of them keep their offices? Some are total slobs! Hidden, rotten food, dead rodents and roaches have been found. How about snapping some pictures and posting that stuff? Not likely to happen because it's their blog! So, how about we assign some Dean assistants to begin checking on and reporting the punctuality of faculty members? How about a new approach to faculty, document, document, document?

Anonymous said...

If you find rotten food or a dead rodent, do an incident report! After all, it is a health issue...

Anonymous said...

Make sure you snap some pics of the scene and room number of the office so you can attach them to the report!

Roy Bauer said...

As usual, lots of assertions, no support. Everyone is welcome to A200. The offices are open all the time. See if you find any rats and rotten food. Good luck.

Anonymous said...

You want to get to the bottom of all this then the District needs to agree with protecting people. Im sure if the District would honor the Whistle Blower protection you would find that John Edwards has some things that would get him in deep trouble.

Anonymous said...

Sergio, how long do we have to wait for the parts ?

Anonymous said...

The only rodent is sitting behind John edwards desk!

If A-200 restrooms are bad. Why not use the A-100 restrooms? Glenn's pooper is always up to code.

Anonymous said...

Naturally, that's what we do. I've only seen the men's restroom, though. It's generally a mess over in A200 and it's usually decent in A100.

Anonymous said...

Let your students know that too, believe me things we'll change quickly once you affect a tiny part of Glenn's building.

Anonymous said...

The A-200 bathrooms are disgusting. There were used tampons spilling out of full trash cans, the floor is covered in grim, and the sinks are not suitable to wash your hands in. I'm thinking about calling the health department. It's getting that bad.

Anonymous said...

People have been told that the A100 bathrooms are only to be used by the personnel assigned to that building. (Yes...this is true you can check it out - if someone is willing to fess up and not be afraid of retalitation)

Anonymous said...

All bathrooms should be opened to faculty and students.

Anonymous said...

We should all start using the A100 Bathrooms and re-direct the students to A100 Bathrooms

Anonymous said...

The painter needs help painting, who better to help him, than his wife.

Anonymous said...

5:04 I DARE YOU TO CALL THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

Anonymous said...

Do you double doggie dare? Lighten up dude. I was being facetious.

Anonymous said...

Things would change quickly if students started using the A100 bathrooms. Currently no students use the A100 bathrooms.

Anonymous said...

The following bathrooms are sanitary and located nearby at Alton and Jeffrey. Some on the North side of Jeffrey and some on the South.
1. Gelson's
2. PDM Café
3. Ralphs
4. El Cholo
There are some others in both shopping centers, including Schools First, but I have not been in those restrooms and cannot attest to their cleanliness.
2. PDM Cafe

The fellow that cleans the A200 building is on vacation, as soon as he gets back from vacation the building will look like the Taj Majal. This Gentleman informed me that besides the A200 buiding he takes care of the library.....

Anonymous said...

It's not just the A200 bathrooms that need attention during the day, B100, BSTIC, B200, B300, after 2:00 P.M. they all look messy, the trash is over flowing, paper towels or toilet paper all over the floor. I never seen the bathrooms this dirty. When Benjamin use to clean them they were always clean. I don't think they have anybody during the day taking care of the bathrooms.

Anonymous said...

So are you being sarcastic or are you giving a compliment 7:58. I'm sure the people who do clean the Library would love to meet you and thank you for your acknowledgement since there aren't many. Just let me know and I will contact them so you can meet.

Is it true that there is a work slow-down in effect as a response to the change in working shifts? That these effects we are all feeling are related to that?

I am supportive of F & M staff as i know how hard the majority of them work.

I also think the other problem here is one of planning and design. When they put in these restroom facilities it is as if they never expected the college to be successful. Four women's stalls for the A200 building? Some homes have more. When they have remodeled, they have never addresses this issue because it doesn't directly affect them.

Anonymous said...

Of course, they are all working to contract, no more, no less. That way it all falls on John Edwards' shoulders.

Anonymous said...

If you think the Classroom Building restrooms are bad, then you have not been in the Student Services building.
Hard to believe we have Health Services and the College Café in the same area with some of the most dirty and disgusting restrooms.

Anonymous said...

10:36 do you work in their department or even know what it takes to clean a school rest room, Un clog the toilets because students put seat covers in the toilet, leave unmentionables on the toilets, no how to strip and wax a floor, clean a carpet, use the right chemicals without blowing your face up. Unless you are a custodian I'm sure you have no idea what they come across. On your job if you work are you concern about catching Aids, Hepatitis B, C or A. On your job when you take out the trash and the bag hits your side and u get stuck with something do you wonder if it was a needle. 1036 unless you do what they do stay out the kitchen.

Anonymous said...

Here's what happens when you change custodians hours.. I noticed at around 5 o'clock women going into men's restrooms and I assume it was because the women's was to dirty. From what I have heard when the custodians came in at 430 this wasn't happening. If this is true then their hours need to go back to 430 if this school really cares about students. I also heard that the custodian crew is short 4.5 workers. If this is true how do you expect to get the job done. I heard that the subs can now only work 25 hours a week...Hmmmm can any one add.

Anonymous said...

Of course they are all working to contract. That's what a contract is for!
...and everything should fall on Edwards' shoulders. After all, he's the one responsible for the poor moral and lack of productivity, a divide and conquer mentality, an unbelievable inability to lead, poor staffing and labor management, and promotes only those who unabashedly fellate themselves into their positions.
This is all of his own making. Let him live with it.

I heard that the ground crew is going back to 7:00 a.m. to take care of all the Bathrooms on campus, each ground guy is to take care of the bathroom closest to his assigned area. You can expect to see them all day inside the bathrooms. Thank you Sergio, Mario, Miguel, Mike, Stan: for your support JOHN

For you that want to know what happened in the meeting well here you go. The meeting was a waste of time so I here. The president rambled on about his life and how the employees should be happy to have a job and be great full. The employees spoke up about how the hour change affects there work and personal life. John Edwards sat there all limped over looking like mr. Innocent and he did nothing wrong while the two other guys spoke. John Edwards is not liked across the IVC Campus because of his Navy mentality. While people were expressing themselves John Edwards would quietly say something to his superiors being rude in the meeting looking like a puppy who wants to have his head stroke. John is a liar and a bad man. Anyone who supports John has got to be blind or just covering up this man's doings. I say get it right heads of the campus or that cancer will eat you to.

Follow up from the 10:00 post. It seems that John Edwards has violated the union contract that was agreed apon between the union and the District. John Edwards seems to have this 20 day notice attached to his hip because he seems to use it alot on the people who work for him. According to the union contract from what I heard classified employees hours can only be switched one time and that's it. The 20 day notice no longer works anymore once this has happened to the Classified employee. Most classified employees are not aware of what their contract says. John Edwards has switched the days and night employees more than once which means John has violated the contract. Im sure John being this sow called intelligent man new exactly what he was doing but from what I heard the employees didn't know they could only be moved once. So this is why a grievance has been filed againts Edwards. Now if you were John's boss would you protect John knowing John new what he was doing or would you say I have to protect my people even though he has damaged lives more than once. On another note according to sources John Edwards told the custodian crew that the union had tied his hands and that he could never change their hours again HMMMMM sound like John really doesn't care what the union has to say.

Anonymous said...

This has become quite an issue, lots of stress. I've been here a year or so now and the rest rooms look much worse these past few months than I have seen since my arrival.
Recently I needed to use a rest room in the late evening after classes, and after the men and women who do these things left, and found the room to be delightfully clean and sweet smelling. A renovation of these aged and obviously distressed rooms might be in order but has nothing to do with cleanliness; which I suppose only lasts for a moment until the first few patrons begin using the facility.
My opinion is worth nothing here but, if rolling back the clock is all it would take to normalize relations and improve the cleanliness of the campus I can not imagine those steps would not be taken.

THE GROUNDS CREW SOLD OUT TO JOHN ........

Sergio, Mario, Miguel, Mike, Stan . Just because things get tough you don't give into what you believe to be right. I'm sure many across campus will see you as weak especially John.

John Edwards is a fair and just man. The faculty don't like him because tenure has no influence with John. The dead weight in M&O don't like John because he holds their feet to the fire and holds individuals to their job descriptions. The administration has no clue how good John is at what he does. At the end of the day, John will be promoted and IVC M&O will sink back into cultivating weeds and camp run-a-monk will have an endless recess. Everyone needs to read the contract before they make comments and assumptions. I'm sure Edwards has.

Anonymous said...

You really don't know John for what he is. He smiles in your face and will put all blame on you when something goes wrong, so as soon as he's done with you he will make you look like the bad person. Nice try but you don't know yourself John.

Anonymous said...

sure John is fair, just like everyone in prison is innocent.

I think that the college looked better when Cindy was the lead groundskeeper, Serjio is not a good leader, he's never here, and when he is, he can't control the grounds crew. I say we bring Cindy back from retirement, and put Serjio back to groundskeeper....

Anonymous said...

I'm seating here drinking my Tea, I'm thinking John is going to loose either way? If we go back to our regular time he's a looser, if we stay at the present time he's a looser? Why cause he's beloved grounds crew that he wants to put back at an earlier time is staying at the present time......

Anonymous said...

For inquiring minds that want to know. This is how it all started with the night crew filing the grievance. John called a meeting with the night crew in the B-400. The night crew from what I here were already thinking it was bad news because most of John's meeting are. According to the night crew John seems to have it in for them and he has proven it in the past. It seems that John doesn't like when a crew of people stick up for themselves when mistreated and that seems to be what has happened in the past. John began to talk about the day crew and his issues with them which the night crew from what I'm told were not interested in hearing because it was coming from John Edwards. John began to tell the night crew his reasons he was moving them up an hour but the next thing he said was the shocker for the night crew. Are you ready? John said because he moved the day crew up an hour so to be fair he is going to move the night crew up and hour. NOW!!! dear readers you tell me if this is what John said does that sound like a fair and just man. NOW!!! readers you tell me where does John give a reason to move the night crew other than its because he moved the day crew. Does this make any since to you I'm sure it didn't make since to John but once again this is John Edwards a man who from what I here had his hands tied by the union. WOW!!! I am flabbergasted to here John's reason for disrupting the night crews lives.

Anonymous said...

Well if this is true that his hands were tied, means the comment written earlier in this blog about (John never loses) is a false statement. apparently he must have lost something the reason that union Tied his hands

Simple solution to dirty bathrooms. Follow the example of other pubic and private entities. They have a schedule posted on the inside of the doors that show when someone has inspected/and or cleaned the restroom. Usually this is done hourly, but can be done 3-4 times per day. It just keeps them clean, tidy and sanitary...what a novel concept!

Anonymous said...

woohoo on dat.

Anonymous said...

most of the night crew should work at night..ie there hours that they hired in at. 1100pm to 700am that way the college can be really clean for the students are customers. bring in 2 for the day shift.

A word to the F&M/M&O crew. In Reading the blog, it seems as if some are starting to attack each other. This is a divide and conquer that John is hoping for. You started out as one and you should finish as one. Don't fall apart now, hang in and hold on times might get rough but hang in there you've been through them before.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 1:46 guys don't give Edwards any and I mean any room. John is trying to clean up his mess he made. Guys you are union do you know what that means, that means you are family and bound by brotherhood. Remember not everyone is up to the fight but nevertheless you defend your wounded brother by not attacking them. Do you understand what it means to be UNION. You are set aside from the rest and have a family of hundreds of thousands. No Director can ever and I mean ever do enough to destroy your family. So I would like you to do something. I would like you to eat union, think union, taste it in your mouth and spit those words out. You are part of an army that fights againts people like John. John is a boy compared to who you are. You are the machine that helps keep that campus running. You stay strong and please stop fighting among each other.

To you I say go to work and stop spying on people.

12:35 you sound just like John. You don't get everybody for some things people may or may not do.From what I here that's how John works. You 12:35 would not make a good boss.

Anonymous said...

Yes 105 John from what im told said that he could never change the crews both day and night hours again because his hands were tied. I also heard that he had blamed someone from the night crew for him getting in trouble with the union. Heres the crack up I was told no one said anyhting to the union the union questioned the night crew why they were in so early. Do you think anyone was going to cove up for John oh no the truth was told. The union filed against John Edwards but to this day so i have been told John still thinks someone at night went to the union. Now as reported earlier from what I read If John feels the night crew got him in trouble then maybe the comment earlier about John not caring for the night crew could have started from there.
