Now what are they doing?

     One of our readers spotted a couple of surprising things on the agenda for next week's (Nov. 25) meeting of the SOCCCD board of trustees:

ASSISTANT DEAN OF FINANCIAL AID AND STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES – ID #, Irvine Valley College, Integrated Academic and Classified Administrators/Classified Managers Salary Schedule Range 20 (Academic Administration) 
DEFINITION
     To provide leadership to plan, develop, organize, schedule, implement, direct, improve and evaluate the financial aid, veterans, scholarship, ambassador, outreach, and other assigned student support services programs, operations and activities at a community college; prepare and administer annual program budgets; ensure compliance with District policies and applicable state and federal regulations related to financial aid and other student support services; train, supervise and evaluate assigned staff; serve as custodian of records and ensure the timely, accurate and legal maintenance, storage, retrieval and release of all records associated with assignment.
     To foster a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the District; lead by example; actively participate in and support District-wide participatory governance components and activities and other collaborative processes; encourage professional excellence among the staff and promote an organizational culture of customer service, innovation, and quality services. 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
     There is one position assigned to direct financial aid operations, services and activities at each of SOCCCD’s two colleges. The responsibilities differ at each college. The Assistant Dean of Financial Aid and Student Support Services at Irvine Valley College is an academic administrative position. The incumbent also supervises the Veterans Program, Scholarship Program, the Outreach Program the Ambassadors Program, the Student Services Specialist at the Advanced Technology Education Park (ATEP), and other student support services as assigned. The Director of Financial Aid at Saddleback College is only responsible for financial aid and scholarship programs and is a classified management position that reports to a Dean….
     Until a couple of months ago, Darryl Cox had been the Director of Financial Aid.
     One of our readers writes: "Well placed sources have indicated that a good friend of our illustrious VP Linda F from Cuesta College is the new heir apparent. She is not a Director, but happens to be a faculty member, so the job description has been changed so she can qualify. Be on the look out for a new hire by the name of Ornelas coming to your college soon. I offer this information so you know who to vote for if you happen to be on the hiring committee. This way you won't have to wait for Linda or Glenn to tell you."
     I've done some checking. This looks to be more than a rumor.

The lack of any leadership is appalling. Linda F will play the same game that Morley did and bring in their own people. The District and the folks at HR continue to be clueless to the stuff that goes on.

Roy, you are being too politically correct saying "remarkably unpopular". The only person hated more than Morley is his boss because he allows his gross incompetence to continue.

When people read this they must think "this can't be true" unfortunately it is. The Blog may not be popular with everyone, but it does allow a voice to be heard without fear of retaliation (yep, no matter what Glen says, lots of it goes on around here) but of course, he is "unaware" DUH! most of it occurs right under his nose by Linda, Craig J and Richard who all reside in the A100 building (aka the "stinkhole")

Off topic but since we're all here someone may know: what's going on A-100 in the evenings? Another pricey remodel? Speedy black mold removal? Reality show filming?

By the way: we can thank the blog for the now regular announcements of how special event impact parking for staff and faculty. I think you embarrassed them so much at the beginning of the semester, they had to do something. Too bad that is what it take to get them to do their jobs. Wasn't it Linda's newly hired friend who booked the PAC like that without any notice?

No one ever know what they're doing in A-100 but yes, looks like a pricey remodel. I wish they had looked at the conditions of the classrooms in the other A quad buildings first....

It's the new executive suite for the newly titled "EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR" of the Foundation, Richard Morley. After all, if you're meeting with big $$$ donors, you need a fancy office. Unfortunately if you look at the results Richard has brought to the college over the past 2 years (yes he has sat his ass in the office for 2 over years) then you would probably give him a broom closet.

The system is what it is and changes only gradually. Intelligent people figure out ways to navigate and manipulate it. The same parallel can be drawn with the president of the United States. Executives’ using the excuse that they were “unaware” makes them look either delinquent or stupid, but they really know what’s going on. It’s the way the chump accomplishes transformation. For the rest of us: try telling a judge you were unaware of some statute and see what happens to you. Glenn=Obama.

Meanwhile, are they really giving Richard new and better digs instead of fixing the portables and the A-quad classrooms? Jesus Christ.

Yes, it is absolutely true. Like most of the information posted on the blog, it is based on factual findings and people willing to speak up about the inequities and problems here at IVC. Unfortunately, we have a lot lemmings (especially in the tenured faculty ranks) that will only complain about their plight but are not willing to speak up. Are you outraged by the incompetence? fed up with the mold, outdated and musty classrooms, horrible bathrooms, etc. then do something about it or quit whining. Roy posted the email address of every trustee....sent them a note expressing your outrage.

Who approves the expenditure of yet another pricey remodel of the A-100 building while the rest of us and our students toil away in moldy classrooms with filthy ill-equipped restrooms? I am talking about the facilities that are yards away from A-100. The trustees need to come and see what learning conditions are like for the majority of students at IVC. They need to see the OLD buildings - not the new ones and need to see how ill-kept they are. You can have old buildings but you need to keep them well. Outrageous. The can't even clean the classrooms we have but Morley gets a new suite?

Listen up: what happens at IVC is this: they ignore incompetence and mediocrity until it can no longer ignored then they either cajole someone out (Tello), fire them, let them go, retire them - and NEVER SAY ANYTHING. Then they replace them with the same. So it goes. As it was and as it ever will be. Every now and then we get someone smart (I am not going to name names) sometimes they survive, sometimes they do not. Sometimes they don't want to be here because of how everyone else is.

As I recall, A200 just got an expensive remodel that created 3 more classrooms. A400 is getting a total rebuild, so your claims of neglect are moot. The reason the classrooms look the way they do with all the clutter and hairballs is because the janitors are not allowed to throw your garbage out. You faculty keep accumulating things, old books, papers, food (yes rotten food!), and then cry foul when things get thrown out. Quite simply, some of you folks are total pack rats: a glimpse into some of your offices speaks volumes. But instead of taking any responsibility and cleaning up your own messes, you cry and complain that administration is at fault: they are self-serving and greedy! The janitors cannot clean up your offices, you have to do it!

What I don't understand is how you "professionals" do not feel the slightest embarasement when your students see the condition of your offices.

Hey 12:00 PM, get with the dialog, the complaints and concerns were about the classrooms and providing a clean and healthy environment for students. Are you suggesting that faculty clean the rooms they have to teach in? Get real and visit some other campus and you will see old buildings that are beautifully maintained (and free of mold)

I think High Noon needs to visit some classrooms - and some of the the restrooms of those buildings. No one is complaining about offices - but about classrooms - remember, students learn IN the classrooms. The same ones with so much accumulated crap on the windowsills and in the corners that students pull the shoddy desks away so they don't have to touch the stuff.

When I have to clean my office - and I do that myself, thank you, I borrow the vacuum that my neighbor keeps in her office. I expect everyone in A-100 does the same thing, don't they? Right?

Yes, by all means, let the custodians throw away all the old books and papers found in faculty offices. Then it will look like the admin offices, nary a book to be found except those meant to decorate the place and add a sense of verisimilitude to an otherwise unconvincing narrative. (That's a literary allusion.)

I think if you actually READ high noon's comments, you will get answers to your questions. The dilemma is that the janitors cannot do their jobs in the classrooms because teachers have complained their things (clutter and rotten food) have been discarded, so its been hands-off. Unless that policy changes, the classrooms will remain in the same condition. A good example is how teachers complain when F&M waxes the floors. They are just trying to do their jobs, yet some people prefer that they don't.

The next part is that one can find a good explaination for the condition of the classrooms by simply looking at how some keep their offices. High noon seems to have touched a nerve and now some are crying, "hey, you have no business paying any attention to that man behind the curtain!"

Gome on folks - grow up and take responsibility!

We're talking about 3 year old graded papers that students never picked up, abandoned coffee mugs, pens pencils, binders, blank papers, all stuff that should be thrown away (in classrooms). But then, of course you have to go and use your predictable slippery slope argument, "why don't we just throw out all the books, etc..." You know that is not what high noon means. Forgodsakesman - Growupandtakeresponsibility!

Based on the published salary schedules Morley's salary is about $6K per year higher than the guy at OCC. According to the charity watchdog site Guidestar in 2011-2012 OCC's donations and revnue were about 5 times as much as IVC's and OCC's net assets are 10 times those of IVC. What are we getting for our $6K?

I have never seen graded papers stacked in any classroom anywhere for longer than few days and I have taught here over two decades in perhaps every building on campus. We do not store books in the classrooms either. Yes, I keep some pens in the classroom, a stapler and board markers - tools of my trade. That's it.

I have never seen food left in my classroom.

Again, 20+ years teaching everywhere on campus.

Correct 3:17 PM that is what Glenn should be asking of Morley. What are we getting for $160K per year (salary and benefits). That is more than Morley brings in. Plus he has a staff of 2-3 people working for him. All of the foundation expense comes from General funds, not donations. Many schools require their foundations to be self-supporting. It is something we should do.
