It's on the syllabus.

But, um, where do I find the syllabus?

Can we buy these in the IVC bookstore?

Anonymous said...

I want one! For every day of the teaching week...

Love the shirt. You could make big bucks selling these, RG!

I notice that "the blog" made the civility list of problems.

Kudos for whoever had the courage to include this blog as a cause of incivility in this district. IT IS! It is simply a bully pulpit. Hopefully, he'll cross the line with all the new cyber-bullying laws, be sued, fined, and shut down. This blog is a black eye on the district. Talk about fear of retaliation and retribution. Cross DtB and see what happens!

I think we could use a t-shirt like this to raise funds for a good cause. It's great.

Certain administrators should make the incivility list ..... And the incompetence list.

Anonymous said...

To 5:36, bullying? a black-eye on the district? You're kidding, I hope. What about the First Amendment? Don't read this blog if you dont' like it. I respect your right to voice your opinion, however.

I haven't finished reading the report but I wonder, during this time of cutbacks and belt-tightening, how much they paid the consultant Spevak to facilitate. He's from the College Brain Trust up in Sacto.

In response to certain administrators making the incivility list, one in particular, should make the no confidence list. Come on faculty, wake up. Maybe we'll all be more civil when we get the bull out of the china closet. We need a serious change in the senate leadership.

Where do I find that civility report?

Anonymous said...

That's an uncivil question, 7:48! To ask how much he was paid.

Dtb is a bully pulpit for demonizing conservatives, of who make up probably a super majority of the community the colleges serve. Not good for PR to have a highly polemical community institution.

I wonder what would happen if some employees at the DMV or the unemployment office were doing something similar? Certainly something to ponder...

I do think the blog is something of an "community institution," I like how it talks about issues on and off campus. I like the t-shirt too. Where can I get one?

3:45, you're not educated, are you?

First of all, you clearly don’t know your history. The phrase “bully pulpit” comes to us from President Teddy Roosevelt. When he called something “bully,” he was not referring to “bullies,” but to excellence. He believed that, as President, he had an excellent opportunity to sway people and bring them to his way of thinking. He had a "bully" pulpit. Get it?
Second of all, this blog does not “demonize conservatives.” It is true that we have criticized some politicians (and others) who happen to call themselves conservative. For instance, we have a very low regard of Perry and Santorum and Gingrich, et al. But, of course, as I’m sure you are aware, many Republicans are frustrated right now, for they find the crop of “conservatives” who are running for the Republican nomination for Prez to be weak, even miserably so. We agree with 'em.
The notion that the faculty of a public college should reflect the political thinking of its community would, of course, lead to many an absurdity, depending on how benighted the community is. For instance, I support the continued efforts at Arkansas community colleges to reject marriage between relatives and illegal moonshining, even if that means that the faculty are practically flipping the bird at their community of knuckle-draggings hillbillies.

5:36, this blog is a "bully pulpit"? You might want to consult your dictionary. A bully pulpit is the use of one's office or position as a platform to express views and opinions. It is my understanding that neither the college nor the district has anything to do with the production of this blog. It is simply the freely expressed (and constitutionally guaranteed) views of a few faculty at IVC.

And I for one find it to be very informative; certainly more so than anything coming out of A100. I imagine that if you dislike what is expressed here you don't have to read it.

And regarding civility, if there is anything uncivil expressed in this blog, it comes from its steady stream of trolls and detractors, not from its authors. In fact, BvT regularly deletes the uncivil comments.

Thanks, DtB!

wooly bully! wooly bully!

Looks to me 3:45 meant bully pulpit in zeitgeist form rather than literally.

I also find dtb informative, but it only diminishes it's academic credibility when different points of view are routinely squelched, and ridiculed; it's just reduced to an echo chamber with a clear agenda.

I have no problem with perspectives that differ from my own. I DO have a problem with moral ugliness and stupidity. I want this to be a good blog; it is often blighted by troll traffic, and that pisses me off.
As I have often stated previously, I invite anyone to submit pieces for publication here. I would be GLAD to publish something that takes an opposing view or that is critical of our position(s). (Further, as we've said endlessly, we are always happy to correct errors.)
But I won't post something that embraces the infantile rhetoric of rude Knuckledraggers: "you libs and your socialism," "Obummer"--that sort of thing. But present a case--arguments, etc.--and I'll be MORE THAN HAPPY to post it.
But I don't expect to get anything. One thing that I've learned after all these years: our campus opponents are cowards. (Just once I'd like to see one of 'em sign his or her name!)
BTW: if you want to see MY name, just click on the link B. von Traven anywhere on the blog. My identify (and my partners' identity) has never been a mystery.

Anonymous said...

Different points of view "routinely squelched"? 5:16, you haven't a clue what you're talking about. I'd be hard-pressed indeed to find someone as open to others expressing opposing arguments and views as BvT. That doesn't mean he needs to publish racist, moronic, puerile comments that would, indeed, diminish the academic quality of this fine blog.

OK, then here’s a challenge:

This blog has been supporting and encouraging the occupy movement because it’s generally made up of, uum…, college educated youngsters who are upset with the unequal distribution of wealth in America, an exhaustively reasserted Fabian Society fallacy, IMHO.

At the occupy Oakland shindig (last week I believe), a young 15 year old boy was indoctrinated by those creeps, which led to him killing both his adoptive parents in cold blood. Hardly any coverage in major media; didn’t see any on this blog either, I don’t know maybe I missed it? It seems to me it’s because they/you have been unable to connect it in any way, shape or form with those “nasty tea partiers,” corrupt Republicans or conservatives, ya know, those people who you say BBQ puppies and wreck our environment, so it’s hardly a concern; it get’s buried, ignored.

However in Tonkovich’s Lawyers Guns & Money article this week, he makes every attempt grasping at all kinds of straws, with all his college educated literary wisdom, to somehow connect that Safeway shooting in AZ to those “nasty tea partiers,” Republicans or conservatives, those “racist Arizonians, that “racist sheriff & governor, racist law” etc… but the problem is there is no connection whatsoever, that kid had no political persuasion, just a case of mental illness. Why all the demonization of conservatives? You folks are the ones who have for years, been advancing hatred of conservatives and conservatism. Then whenever someone points out the animus and hypocrisy, and there’s plenty of it, you manage to “moderate” them out. So what gives?

Sure, in the short run you may win your little battle against what you’ve labeled “trolls,” but I think in the long run your little group will lose your unpopular war against our inherently conservative community and the colleges, who BTW, only want to move forward.

10:45, you are insane. Get help, honestly.

That's a pretty big old steaming pile there, 10:45.

This is the biggest turd in the pile: "At the occupy Oakland shindig (last week I believe), a young 15 year old boy was indoctrinated by those creeps, which led to him killing both his adoptive parents in cold blood."

Let's hope you don't have a gun collection.
