Photos from the family's 1974 backpacking trip in the California Sierra Nevada. On this particular trip, we were way in, where few people ever go.
When, after two weeks, we hiked out, we ran into a guy on the trail who'd just started his trip.
"What's new in the world?", we asked.
"Well, we've got a new President," he said.
We were amazed. And happy.

Amazing Pics!!! Nothing beats the old fashioned "film" type camera's like the Pentax.... Thanks for the beautiful views....
Nothing beats "film" period... :)
Beautiful photos; I'll get the name to the place we're going next week. Nothing I've ever heard of before, but it's supposed to be one of those lake systems kinda places, and one where we go where people don't normally go, like, the fourth of fifth lake...
These look like the Little Lakes Valley - is it, Chunk?
I'll make enquiries. I tend to conflate trips, since we went each year until about '74. I seem to recall we visited the Lost Keys Lakes (I think Teddy Roosevelt visited near there) and Fish Creek hot springs. Not sure. But I'll see what I can find out.
For the '74 trip, we seem to have taken the High Sierra Trail, going through Hamilton Lakes and crossing Kaweah Gap into the Nine Lakes area, etc.
Mr. 13, do let us know where you're headed. I've been to most areas in the Sierra Nevada, though I do seem to run them all together in my memory. Our "Fish Creek" trip was in '72. My pics here are from '74. I did some snooping on the internet and lots of folks have glorious photos of "Valhalla" and similar formations along the High Sierra Trail/Hamilton Lakes/Kaweah basin. "Little Lakes Valley" doesn't ring any bells, but I'll ask the folks if we've ever been there.
Little Lakes Valley is up from Rock Creek off 395 (turn off near Lake Crowley).
We go there every year on our way home.
There are some great pics of Little Lakes Valley here.
We are going to Bishop Pass, west of Bishop, via South Lake. Leaving tomorrow noontime, returning sometime Friday, unless Mrs. 13 goes into labor (due Aug 2).
Ah, yes, Bishop Pass. I looked at a map. The family went through the pass and spent some time in the Dusy basin. Great fishing, as I recall (not that I fish anymorep if I were to fish, I'd have a brief conversation with the creatures and then throw 'em back). I recall something called "Chocolate Peak" as well and the Lamarck Lakes. Pretty spectacular. Have fun!
