UC squeeze, Mercs for jerks

UC makes it official: Fewer freshmen get in for fall:
The system turned away 27.5% of applicants this year, with Santa Cruz, Davis and Irvine experiencing the greatest jumps in selectivity. A record number had applied to UC schools. (LA Times)

At UCI, the acceptance rate fell from 49% to 42.8%. So where do you suppose all this hope-dashery is leadin'? That's right!

Building funding sought:
Orange Coast College is working to finance an almost $100 million complex some are calling the Superbuilding that will be made up of three interdisciplinary facilities.... (OCC Coast Report, April 7)

Gosh, this kinda reminds us of Irvine Valley College's ill-fated "Howard Hilton"!

Lennar Corp. extends Irvine campus lease:
Cal State Fullerton’s Irvine campus won’t have to move just yet, as the university and Lennar Corp. announced an agreement March 26 to allow the satellite campus to continue operating in its current lease contract until August 2010…. (CSUF's The Daily Titan, April 5)

Stop the Big Business of Cheating:
…In a recent article from The Chronicle of Higher Education, Thomas Bartlett reveals that student use of “essay mills” is on the rise. … Prices can cost up to $42.99 per page for sites like BestEssays.com.... Ultimately, essay mills are yet another Internet-facilitated obstacle in the quest for academic honesty …. (UCI’s New University editorial, April 6)

• Watch the March 24 meeting of the SOCCCD board of trustees

SOCCCD Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur is a community college administrator who makes about $300K a year, including a generous "Mercedes allowance." That's right, he drives a spiffy Mercedes on the district's dime.

With all that motivation, he no doubt does the very best he can. You see him sweatin' and gruntin' and schemin' all the time. Unfortunately, his best is shit. Remember when he forgot about the 50% law, forcing a massive and absurd hiring frenzy? Recall how he happily let our clueless board put the colleges' accreditation in dutch by defying the accreds? Think of the "plague of despair" that he's created and sustained all these years!

That's right. I'm asking.

Evidently, the board has no plan to terminate Mathur, mostly because the fellow is a loyal member of Team Fuentes, and some key trustees don't have the guts to go against that Karl Rovian operator (namely, former county GOP head and "Creeps for Jesus" founder Tom Fuentes). But at least they could give Mathur cheaper wheels, like maybe this PUMA thingy (below). We know that Mathur is always thinking of the students, 'cause he says so every five minutes. Well, Rag Man, here's a golden opportunity!

Think of what Tom would say! He might even give you another BIG FAT RAISE.

You are likely young, ES. Trust me, lots of us older folks don't know, just as you are unlikely to understand a reference (at this point) to, say, "Mr. Jones": "something is happening but you don't know what it is--do you? Mr. Jones"

I am neither young nor old; I'm forty. It seems to me that "dope!", although slang, has been in wide use by young folks long enough (decades, at this point) that most people would be familiar with it's general meaning. But I could easily be mistaken, so I apologize for the post earlier - it WAS a bit bratty. I liked the "Mr. Jones" thing that you shared...

10:19's definition of "dope" was definitely useful for me. Been teaching some pretty hip students for decades, and didn't know that one at all. (Hey, I only learned "chill" a couple of years ago!)

I like it that ES says "I am neither young nor old; I'm forty." I believe I'll adopt a version of that myself: I am neither young nor old; I'm fifty-five. Perhaps everyone over forty should adopt a similar phrase and corresponding attitude. As you may have guessed, I have struggled lately with the tyranny of numbers and societal ideas of "old."

"Ballad of a Thin Man" probably has special significance for Fuentes.
