The trustee races

I visited the County Registrar of Voters website this morning to find out who’s running for a seat on the board in our district:

Trustee Area 1
(Irvine, etc.)

CAROLYN INMON, Retired College Professor
Candidate Statement Issued:7/31/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/7/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/31/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/7/2008

(Inmon is the faculty union’s candidate going up against Dave Lang. Lang is a strong supporter of Chancellor Mathur.)

DAVID B. LANG, Trustee, SOCCCD

Candidate Statement Issued:7/15/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/6/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/15/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/6/2008

(Lang, of course, is the Benedict Arnold of SOCCCD. Several years ago, horrifying long-time faculty supporters, he suddenly became Mathur’s greatest champion, after Tom Fuentes. On the Red County blog, Lang is described as Tom Fuentes’ “ally.”)

Trustee Area 3 (Laguna Beach, etc.)

ARLENE GREER, Businesswoman
Candidate Statement Issued:8/5/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/8/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:8/5/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/8/2008

(Near as I can tell, Greer is somewhat involved in Newport Beach politics. She’s interested in environmental or “green” issues. I think she’s the president of a NB home-owners association. Elsewhere, she seems to call herself a “homemaker.”)

WILLIAM (BILL) JAY, Governing Board Member, SOCCCD
Candidate Statement Issued:7/25/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/7/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/25/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/7/2008

(Bill has been a solid supporter of the faculty. He’s supported by the faculty union.)

RANDALL S. JOHNSON, Real Estate Investor
Candidate Statement Issued:7/29/2008
Candidate Statement Filed: NOT FILED?
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/29/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed: NOT FILED?

(I’m having trouble finding out much about this guy. In Red County, he’s described as a “new face.” Hmmm. The question is: is he a member of "Team Fuentes"? Dunno.)

Trustee Area 6 (Lake Forest, etc.)

BOB BLISS, Retired College Professor

Candidate Statement Issued:7/23/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/5/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/23/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/5/2008

(Bliss taught at Saddleback College for many years. An author. Supported by the faculty union.)

THOMAS A. "TOM" FUENTES, Trustee, SOCCCD
Candidate Statement Issued:7/17/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/6/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/17/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/6/2008

(An open enemy of faculty. Somewhat of a conspiracy nut re accreditation.)

Trustee Area 7 (Mission Viejo, etc.)

CARL CHRISTENSEN, Retired Educator

Candidate Statement Issued:7/28/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:7/28/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/28/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:7/28/2008

(Christensen, a retired Saddleback College professor, has appeared at board meetings, complaining about the poverty of history courses in some areas at SC. His priorities seem, well, odd.)

MO ENTEZAMPOUR, College Professor/Administrator
Candidate Statement Issued: NONE?
Candidate Statement Filed: NONE?
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:8/8/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/8/2008

(This fellow has been an adjunct at IVC. He appears to be a division dean at Cypress College.)

JOHN S. WILLIAMS, Trustee, SOCCCD
Candidate Statement Issued:7/15/2008
Candidate Statement Filed:8/6/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Issued:7/15/2008
Declaration of Candidacy Filed:8/6/2008

(Williams is supported by the faculty union.)

The “candidate statement” links at the county site appear not to be working. I'll provide the statements when I can.

Can someone explain how the Union continues to back Mr. Williams after his years of unfailing support for Raghu Mathur, his notorious junketeering to Orlando Florida and his ambivalence about faculty salaries? He has been Trustee throughout the entire ongoing decline of the District and can think only of himself, sports, and honorary degrees.

Hey there! IMO it's interesting that this Arlene Greer appeared on the scene w/everything paid for. I say interesting b/c I am more than certain that this is another reactionary right (Education Alliance) candidate. I hate to say it, but I know when I hear the two words "home maker" they have the same effect as the two words, "family values" as far as buzz words. I'm not meaning to insult anyone who is a home maker, but IMO it's strange that all of a sudden she appears on the scene.

Hey, oops I may have to correct myself here, but as I said, I'd want to find out more about her to see if this person is more in Fuentes' category. She has to turn in her financial statements sometime to find out who is funding & backing her, and I'm sure at least one of them has to be not long after her race begins & the $$$ starts coming in. As I said, this person came out of the blue, & that other guy doesn't have any information nor candidate statement on himself whatsoever.

6:28, the faculty association emphasizes the faculty contract, and Williams has been more-or-less friendly on that score. (I believe that qua bailiff he was a unionist.)

Williams has often (and unfortunately) voted with the "Fuentes majority," but he has never led them. He has, however, been the avant-garde with regard to travel to distant sunny climes. I salute him.

Greer is running against an incumbent (ours). It is not likely that we need to worry about her. Forget her.

Hi Roy!

The one thing I have learned from being politically active is NEVER discount anybody b/c it's those people who are the most shrewd b/c they count on us brushing them off. You never, ever know where a big portion of their backing will come from & as you know, much of the people who gave $$$ is often hidden until after the election.

I don't know, but I'm not willing to bet that we won't get side swiped by some other candidate b/c we underestimated their electability. I'd much rather proceed w/caution. It's not like the other guy who doesn't have any ballot designation. I noticed that Greer also put that she supports green causes. In your last note on her (one you posted the other day) it said that she supports another type of cause (green) so she's trying to appeal to both sides.:-)

You know, saying that she supports environmental causes which supports a traditional Democratic Party cause, & yet the other "home maker," etc to appeal to Republican voters. I suppose as the saying goes, "Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer."

Roy's obituary in LA Times and Register: "we were lucky to have you while we did"
