A Republican event?

According to the local GOP, the OC is “America’s most Republican County!”

Yeah, whatever. Occasionally, I visit the OC GOP website, ‘cause there’s no telling what you’ll find there. I mean, these people gather to listen to Rush Limbaugh! Yeah, and some of these same bozos wanted to name Irvine’s Great Park the "Richard M. Nixon" Park. Plus they wanted to name ATEP the “Ronald Reagan Technology and Jelly Bean Village.” I kid you not. (Well, OK, I made up the "village" part.)

At the website, under “events,” I found the usual meetings, fundraisers, parties, and whatnot. Every one of these events has some connection to, well, Republicans, which makes sense.

But what about this one?
9/11 Commemoration Ceremony
Keynote Speaker: Irvine Police Chief David L. Maggard, Jr.

Where: Irvine Valley College Performing Arts Center

Please join the IVC community in commemorating the seventh anniversary of 9/11 with keynote speaker, Irvine Police Chief David L. Maggard, Jr. and Master of Ceremonies Tom Fuentes, Chairman Emeritus, Republican Party of Orange County. During the ceremony, there will be a moment of silence in commemoration of the lives lost on this day. Let us never forget our loss.
Somebody explain this to me. Is this a “Republican” event? Is that the idea?

Psssh, everyone knows Republicans are way more patriotic than Democrats. Duh, they're totally for the war, and being for the war means that you are patriotic. And being patriotic means that you are not a Democrat, because being a Democrat means you are against the war, and being against Bush and the war means you are not a Republican. Therefore, you are not allowed to participate in 9/11 commemorations because you are not a Republican. Therefore #2, only Republicans can be on campus that day to celebrate the moment of silence that only war-mongering Republicans can enjoy.

Hi Roy!

No, I seriously doubt it would ever happen. It would really have to be a over whelmingly cold day in hell before anyone on the Irvine city council would vote to name the new Great Park anything after "Tricky Dicky." That might be a fantasy of Fuentes & friends, it just wouldn't happen. I could pass that on to Larry & Beth though to see if they'd get a kick out of it.:-)

Of course, from what it seems like since 1993 ATEP is a joke, much like dear old Ronny was.

13 Stoploss,
Is there class on that day or all Democrats excused?

Anonymous said...

oh no, were not excused by any means. If we don't show up, our names appear on a list somewhere. That's how these fellows operate. Don't think that they're not writing this all down somewhere.

Non-Republicans are not excused from class on that day, but Republicans are. They get to sleep in, and then show up to the event. It's a perk, and it comes in the benefits package.

But do we get commemorative pens?

No, commemorative baseball caps.

"Tricky Dicky Parky" has a nice ring to it. "The Great Park" sounds too much like "The Great War" don't you think?

13 stoploss you sound like a real putz.

9:16, Ah, name-calling sans point or argument. A reliable indicator that an "intellect" has chosen to visit us. Thank you for your contribution.

I certainly respect and support anything IVC does to commemorate 911. But it appears that IVC is now center stage for our local yokels to conduct their smarmy political theater. The venue used to be Saddleback College, but the college’s former president stood his ground and dissuaded those who wanted their moment in the spotlight.

All politicians love center stage when it comes to honoring sacrifice and selflessness. But there's nothing more transparent than self-righteous politicos making speeches over how courageous first responders and military service members are when they themselves did nothing to answer the call of duty. Instead most of them simply chose to sit smugly in the seat of safe luxury and comfort surrounded by ideological power brokers.

Compare the program at IVC with that at Saddleback College. There will be no political speeches and no outside officials of perceived importance. At Saddleback two current paramedic students will briefly speak. One of these paramedic students is a combat veteran of the war in Iraq. The MC for the event is a low level manager who will do no more than introduce and guide the activities of the event. The 30-minute event includes the lowering of the flag to half-mast, and the presentation of a floral wreath. It will take place outside at the main flagpole at the Medical Center Drive entrance. There may be attendees from the public in general, but most be students, faculty, and staff.

Just a college community coming together in solemn respect to remember that terrible attack on September 11, 2001, and to honor those who now answer the call to do whatever is necessary to keep us safe and free.

What a difference a college makes.

The Saddleback ceremony does sound like the right sort of event. I'm impressed.

IMO great idea 8:49 p.m. I think that something should be done to commemorate 9-11, but not by turning it into an all out Republican 3 ring circus. I also think that Saddleback's event sounds great.:-)
