.....Over time, teachers grow old, they lose touch with students and their youthful interests and concerns. That’s obvious. Students walk around with iPods and don’t know where Iraq is. They watch American Idol and think that punctuation is optional.
.....They’re not like us.
.....Gosh, these kids, I don’t know what they’re about anymore.
.....I figured I’d make an effort to figure 'em out. I went to YouTube and typed in the names of our two colleges, thinking that I’d find stuff that “the kids like” and that “the kids are doing” these days.
.....I started with our lovely college to the south. Here’s some of what I found:
SADDLEBACK COLLEGE VIDEOS:
1. Saddleback College Commercial
.....(To watch the video, click on the pretty blue words.)
.....My guess is that a student produced this three and a half minute promotion of SC. Not sure. Highlights:
.....• An official-sounding person (a counselor?) says: “The goal of Saddleback College first and foremost is for the students.”
.....Evidently, good grammar is not a goal of the college.
.....• One student is interviewed. He is utterly unprepared to speak. He says that SC is “a cheap alternative” to four-year universities.
.....OK. He decides to list the college’s virtues, reasons to attend SC, and so, naturally, he refers to—the “game room.” We see kids playing pool. We hear balls banging together. “Crack.”
.....• Soon, the kid’s tapped out, reasonwise. Then he thinks of something. He says, “It’s a very broad range of topics and ethnicities….”
.....What is?
2. Saddleback Commercial
.....This one really looks like it was made by a student for a class. The kid must’ve gotten a C or D. Up here at IVC, we’d give ‘im an F.
3. Saddleback College Transfer Day: University of Hawaii
.....43 seconds of alleged Polynesian dancing, out between the SC Library and Math. Short and sweet. Nice noisy drumming.
.....OK, if this is what the kids are doing, I’m all for it. And educational, too!
4. Saddleback Cheerleading Camp
.....Surely this will be good! —But no. Sappy music, long shots, no editing. Forgetaboudit.
5. Beltane Anthro 13 Saddleback College
.....I’m guessing this has something to do with somebody’s Anthropology class. It’s two minutes of a woman laughing while students (?) perform some sort of fertility ritual involving sections of pipe (that shoot water), a game of grab-ass, and a doll (I think), tossed into the air.
6. Beltane Anthro 13 Saddleback College (2)
.....Another Anthro effort, I think, this time 39 seconds long. Students stand around waiting for something. Rudimentary drumming is heard. Suddenly, a naked guy covered in paint jumps out of a bag and immediately runs away.
.....Sheesh.
.....OK, it’s time to type in “Irvine Valley College.” Here’s some of what I found:
IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE VIDEOS:
1. Irvine Valley Upload Recycling
.....4:46. Pretty good, for what it is. The host is good. Learn all there is to know about recycling at IVC.
.....One problem though: nobody wants to know this much about recycling at IVC. Poor Tony. On and on he goes. “No car batteries,” he says.
2. IVC Math with Rich Zucker
.....I’m gonna end with this one. It's an attempt to promote math instruction at IVC, starring Rich Zucker.
.....Not bad, I guess, but the target audience seems to be, well, dummies. See for yourself:
.....You don't suppose that Rich understands these kids, do you?
.....Nah. Just remember: "p" means "pencil."

Did you see the IVC Reading Program promotion taped on Senior Day (when High School Seniors were visiting)?
I don't want to see any of this! make it go away!
nothing like bashing fellow faculty members and students....real nice Chunk
I don't think Chunk is bashing, per se.
Check out the rest of the YouTube offerings - the ones he decided not to share.
What ARE those Anthro students doing?
Maybe this is taken out of context?
I couldn't get my students to do something like that - not in a million years.
I LIKE the recycling video!
Who is the audience for these videos? Why are they made? Is this a marketing tactic?
I had no idea that this stuff existed.
I am not sure whether or not to thank Chunk for bringing it to my attention - judging from the number of "views" the videos have gotten, few people have viewed them.
Too painful.
Chunk evidently chose to stay away from the really wild stuff, like Crazy Religious Guy. And worse.
I didn't get Rich's joke...
False reporting Chunk!
He's NOT naked!
I agree! It seems that Chunk is bashing faculty and Staff.
How can posting these videos be construed as "bashing"?
Most of us didn't even know they existed.
I for one am grateful for Chunk's work here even though I never want to see any of these videos again.
These videos are supposed to promote the colleges?
Isn't Zucker your Teacher of the Year?
Chunk and Zuker = Dumb and dumber
You, however, 5:50, are a pinnacle of enlightenment and intellectual prowess.
Does anyone care about these young people? How can they possibly run this country? Geez. It's all so drab.
The IVC videos on YouTube are awesome! Very nicely made. I saw the Reading Video, very nice. Kudos to the folks who post them
The reading video IS great but what's up with those anthro students?
Hahaha I love Crazy Religious Guy. The response from the children makes me sad though - they let the guy get to them too much in an emotional manner.
He's just there to get everyone angry and they TOTALLY give in to it.
Thank you 12:12 and 12:37. We are proud of the reading video also.
The reading video makes everyone proud - really. It's smart -
Wow. WIth all the things going on at the district level you choose to display this. BTW what do you have against Saddleback ? Your tone was a little off.
DK
Why shouldn't they reveal what students (and faculty? administrators?) are doing on YouTube? What's your problem, man?
And who else reports what goes on in this district?
Well, to be fair, the first two look like they were shot in our CA 101 Video Production Basics class in a three-hour assignment to shoot a promo for the college. These students have not handled the tools for more than a couple of months at best and is mostly an exercise is scripting and setting correct images against the voice over. As for "giving them an F up here at IVC" I would suggest you try taking the class and giving it a go - it just ain't that easy.
As for the other stuff, that is clearly just some students with a handicam shooting for fun and the shooters probably never thought it would ever go under criticism or scrutiny; it was likely just goofing around.

If people don't want their videos commented upon, they should not post them on YouTube, which solicits comments.
Charlie, you might suggest to students that they take care in how they label their efforts (and where they post them). For instance, a 3-hour homework assignment will likely receive a more generous critique when it is labelled as such.
The comment about the "F" is only humor, an allusion to certain events in the district in which standards were met by some within the district but not by others.
The original idea of this post was to examine what students do and what they are thinking. For that purpose, student-made videos are as relevant as anything. They tell us much. -CW
Students often post their work on YouTube so that instructors/peers can review them prior to turning them in for a grade - it is very handy for that application.
I think their work in progress is being wildly and unfairly misinterpreted by this post.
Charles Myers
I think these videos just offer other views of what happens here, that's all.
Some of it is good, some of it is awkward, some of it is strange.
I think it's been interesting to see this stuff which I had no idea existed before Chunk posted it.
I think some people are misinterpeting the TONE - Dissent's TONE is often exaggerated for comic effect. Don't take it so seriously, people.
