New state chancellor

In this morning’s Inside Higher Ed:
• The California Community College System has its new leader and, unlike elsewhere, board members didn’t have to choose between someone with legislative connections or a background in academe – they got both. State Senator Jack Scott, chair of the Senate Committee on Education and a lawmaker since 1997, previously served as president of Cypress and Pasadena City Colleges, and as a professor and dean elsewhere. He takes over in January after completing his legislative term – where, as chair of a subcommittee that controls the education budget, he’ll be confronting the multi-billion dollar budget shortfall that community colleges have reason to fear. In January, the governor proposed $525 million in reductions for the 109-college system.

• An instructor who lost her chance to teach at California State University at Fullerton because she refused to sign a required state loyalty oath is proposing a compromise, the Los Angeles Times reported. With help from the group People for the American Way, the instructor is now willing to sign an oath that also allows her to state her unwillingness — based on her Quaker beliefs — to take up arms. With People for the American Way threatening to sue, Cal State officials are willing to talk, but the job the instructor lost has already been filled.

Jack Scott was a terrible state senator. He is a spend and tax liberal who thinks he knows best for everyone. He lost a son to a firearms accident many years ago, so he blamed the gun and not the knucklehead who squeezed the trigger. Liberal logic - go figure!

When times are good it is alot easier to be "liberal" with the public largesse. Now that the financial squeeze is on I actually welcome this guy on board.

There isn't any room for business as usual. This will be another test of the validity of left wing leadership (right wing "leadership" in California is a steaming pile of manure).

Will the system office mandate cuts in insultants, analists, and liaryers? Will changes be made to force districts to purchase supplies from a central warehouse? Will caps be made on salaries? (Some managers with 2 year degrees make 10-20% more than tenured faculty where I work). Will energy efficiency be enforced? Will personal use of district vehicles be banned? Will car and entertainment allowances be banned? Will legal services be provided from a state source? Will Keenan and Associates be fired? Will Zampi be banned. Will failed administrators be blacklisted? Will there be ANY meaningful effort to prevent wasteful spending?

Sadly, I don't believe any of the above will happen.

Instead tuition will increase, classified staff will be laid off ( goodbye copy guy), programs will be cut (EOP&S cuts and faculty layoffs), and insultants will be hired to study the problem. There will be much handwringing and large crocodile tears will fall.

I am looking for work at the local prison. They pay a lot more and get raises there. Screw it, I've had enough.

Look, 6:25, stop saying "tax and spend" liberal and we'll stop saying "borrow and spend" rightie.

What a dick.

11:18 You nailed the problem with the "right wing".
