Chunk on Alcatraz

.....We spent Thursday visiting Alcatraz. I recommend the trip highly, although I suspect that our experience was enhanced by the great weather. So be sure to order great weather before you book.
.....There are structures on the island that date to the California Gold Rush. (Neanderthals, that would be about 1849.) The ruins of the Warden's house are freakin' wonderful--a lovely garden flourishes inside and out.
.....The main prison block reminded me of nothing so much as a mall. The Mall of Orange in particular.

Wow Chunk! Great pics. Were you up there over Memorial Day Weekend? By chance when you did a tour of the place did you get to see Al Capone's jail cell by chance? I've been following mob stuff for years, but alas have never see Mr. Alfonse Capone's prison cell. Did they give you a tour or are were you on your own?:-)

Dear Chunk:

Oops! I suppose that room w/that little window was a view from Al Capone's cell. Was the room really small?:-)

Re the tour: there are day trips and there is an evening trip. For the former, one takes an "audio tour" with headsets. Yes, one encounters the cells of various celebrity fellons, including Al Capone,

Dear Chunk:

IMO that sounds really cool. i wonder what the difference is between the day & evening tours other than it's dark out. Did they tell you what you'd get w/the night time tour? I'd probably have taken the day time tour too. Seems like the video w/head sets seem to be replacing the tour guides. How long does the tour take? I just know that I'd find it really fascinating. As I said, I dabbled in some mob history, whether it be in movies, documentaries, or reading, etc. If I could get my hands on it, I would just dive right into it. You name it movie wise chances are I'd seen it, including the 1938 version of "Scarface." I know when I went down to San Diego & saw one set of the Dead Sea Scrolls they had us put on head phones & gave this little thing that looked like a remote control.

Now of course w/access to the Internet I just bring up Wikipedia & read stuff that way. The different gangsters, whether they be in the Italian or Jewish Mafia (a/k/a the Kosher Nostra, Murder, Inc. & the Puple gang in Detroit).:-)
