A Harsher California

The San Bernardino Valley lies only an hour east of Los Angeles by the San Bernardino Freeway but is in certain ways an alien place: not the coastal California of the subtropical twilights and the soft westerlies off the Pacific but a harsher California, haunted by the Mojave just beyond the mountains, devastated by the hot dry Santa Ana wind that comes down through the passes at 100 miles and whines through the eucalyptus windbreaks and works on the nerves. October is the bad month for the wind, the month when breathing is difficult and the hills blaze up spontaneously. There has been no rain since April. Every voice seems a scream. It is the season of suicide and divorce and prickly dread, wherever the wind blows.
—from "Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream" by Joan Didion

We've been here before folks. Be safe.

Two views from Silverado Canyon Road - last night (courtesy of canyon gal and taken by one of our wonderful volunteer fire watch personnel).

Holy crap! That's my "I need to think about stuff and sing Wierd Al songs out loud" route!

My baby is on fire!

None the less, be glad you weren't at IVC today. The air is thick with ash, and I almost feel like an idiot just for breathing around there.

Also, traffic is extremely weird on and off the freeways.

Here's hoping all our college's family and friends --especially Chunk, Red Emma, and Rebel Girl-- are spared and safe.

Be well, all!

The smoke is bad in Irvine. Ash everywhere. I work in Mission Viejo and we had our students out during snack, which was a mistake, the ash got everywhere and it was difficult to breathe. Some people had to leave work because they had to pick up their kids from schools in Foothill Ranch.

I'm glad you've got a place to go, I was worried when I read the email saying evacuation was mandatory. Hope the winds die down tomorrow. Let's hope for the best.

Oh Reb, be safe.

I heard that the fire may have been started by someone who stole a car and set it on fire to destroy the evidence. I hope they find who did it, scoop him up in water dropping helicopter, and drop him into the fire.

Or drop him into the fire by parachute.

Or make the arsonist go to each resident in every affected area to personally apologize and listen to their tales...and then make that loathsome person clean up, help people move, rebuild, and replant. That's what friends will do, and that's what decent people would do...
