Irvine Valley College Commencement

The students were happy, natch
Evidently, I'm the last soul alive without an iPhone

Erwin & Craig

The campus looked great, especially when the sun poked through the clouds,
as it did intermittently
These posies were near the podium where all the speechifyin' occurred
Some of the usual suspects, happily doing their jobs
Again, the sun shone only intermittently, making things hard for shutterbugs
The start of the parade of Toga People

Is it just me or do others find that students get better looking each year?
It's good to be alive against a backdrop of blueness and clouds
Blue, it must be said, looks better than red. Lucked out there.
As always, I noticed the little kids in the audience, invariably enjoying the inexplicable large
and colorful weirdness of the goings on

Where there is sun, there are shadows
IVC President Glenn Roquemore spouted his usual factoids
Trustee David Lang, coughin' up a hairball, I guess
The crowd almost seemed vast. It was big, anyway
Lots of cops around, keepin' the peace
A vast, complicated sky
Trustee TJ Prendergast
His daughter was out there, somewhere
IVC Police Chief Will Glen

You really need sun for shots like these
A little sun appeared
UCI Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky
He advised students to be nice
He noted the failures of niceness of such noisy characters as Mr. Trump and the late Justice Scalia
I wonder if the Trumpsters in the audience were peeved?
If they did anything foul or coarse, I sure didn't notice it. Thanks.

Little kids are almost as good as pups and kittens, photo-wise

Again: the sky was vast and intimidating

Teacher of the Year, Rebecca Beck
Her brief address was much admired: pithy and perfect
A moment of bluster

Often, the photographer is only tolerated

Had something actually happened? Did I miss it?

This felt like a protest, but it wasn't, of course

Golden minute

One of Mark's students
Smiley colleagues. Good colleagues.

I was too busy lookin' for images to notice what this was all about

More goldenness

"With that beard, you look pretty academic," said someone.
"It's as Academic as he's ever gonna get," I added
Mark, in his own way, is an éminence grise

Goldenness

I don't care what anybody says, I like our Biz Quonset
Meanwhile, over at BSTIC, geometry was on display
Over at SSC: fake brick

Fools run district

Want evidence that the administrative leadership of the district (and its colleges) are sans clue?
Last Friday, faculty received this message from the Faculty Association:

Opacity, neanderthalerie, unilateralicity!
The FA wants to remind all full-time faculty that attendance at commencement, or other appropriate graduation ceremony, is now mandatory as part of the 2015-2018 Academic Employee Master Agreement. If you do not attend …, you will need to use 1/2 of a sick/personal necessity leave day.
Yes, nothing says “supporting your college and students” quite like showing up to Commencement under threat of getting one’s pay docked. What would we do without such leadership?

It’s 2:45 as I write this, on IVC Commencement day, and the day’s been mighty gloomy so far, though I’ve witnessed no actual rain. In the past, such gloom always means moving the ceremony indoors. Hope they don’t do that today. I bought a polarizing filter for my camera lens and I wanna try it out.

The day started with a Bernie Sanders event in Anaheim, another big success no doubt. It makes me smile. Good times in OC!

It’s a good day for people to dress in robes, listen to officials, and to snicker at the usual foolishness and cluelessness. Commencement Bingo will be played, as usual. Let the mocking begin!

Will there be an invocation to/of the Lord? Will college prez Glenn R spout more meaningless factoids? Will the Commencement speaker, IVC Law’s Erwin Chemerinsky, allude to the foolish rightwingery—the abject anti-intellectual dumbfuckery—surrounding him?

     I sure hope so.

Feelin' the Bern in Irvine!

IRVINE – Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders brought his campaign against what he calls a “rigged” economy and political system to a boisterous, nearly full Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre on Sunday, expressing optimism that he will win the nomination despite a disadvantage in party delegates.
“The reason this campaign is doing so well is that we’re doing something radical in modern politics,” he said in an hourlong speech at the 16,000-seat venue. “We’re telling the truth."
