Muted blue, shades of gray, let 'em eat cake

The Foundation office in A100 received a truckload of new furniture yesterday.
Doesn't look like much. Note the color: muted blue, gray.
Mr. Morley directs the Foundation.
His predecessor, Al Tello, was a nice guy but a nitwit.
Some are saying that we should bring back Al. Please.
This, of course, is the vast wasteland called "A100, interior." It gets remodeled every year or so.
It used to have a deep red floor. For a few minutes, anyway. But red is Saddleback's color, evidently.
We're muted blue. The more muted the better.
Meanwhile, most campus restrooms look like sh*t. In A200 anyway.
Note the color theme: muted blue, 50 shades of gray.
The perfect accompaniment to impending entombment or abject Republicanism.
Yawn. Snooze. Droolage.

Does anyone know the deadline for letters of recommendation for scholarships? I am suddenly getting all these email requests from starschaorlshipsonline.com but there is no deadline mentioned anywhere. I am a little worried that it might be today - hence the sudden influx of requests. Any help appreciated. I had plans for tonight and don't want to sit here and write letters...

I do believe that the deadlines for students is right about now (i.e., today); hence all the requests. Students wait until the last minute. The deadline for the letters shouldn't be to hard to come by.

There is no information on the email appeals sent out regarding deadlines. The only deadline mentioned on the college website is today. So the deadline must be today (?).

The student deadline was indeed yesterday. But our deadline is different but I don't know where it is. The poster is right; there is no information about this anywhere. I can't imagine it was yesterday - but then again...

April 1 is the deadline. Relax.

Thanks!

A friend has sent this information (the friend appears to be confident): "the 21st was the due date for the students to submit scholarship applications. The due date for letters was in early March but has been moved (apparently unilaterally) to next Friday the 28th."
That doesn't square with 8:57's information above. Not sure who's right. But surely we have at leasdt until Friday to submit these letters on behalf of students.

Why don't they have this info on the form?

12:31 PM - to answer your question, it's called communication, unfortunately our administration has not mastered that skill yet.

It's not about COMMUNICATION. It's about putting a deadline on a form we were given to fill out. Or at least listing the deadline somewhere on the college website in the general vicinity of the program. I have had some students insisting that last Friday was the deadline for everything -and one who seem angry with me that I did not file in time. I have others who say there were told that the deadline for letters was later but they don't know the date. It's like if I gave an assignment in class without a due date.

10:54 - I thought putting out a deadline was communication. You know...letting people know what is required, when it is due, etc. the kind of information that our students need. We do a lousy job of communicating information to our campus and especially our students.

I had one student who thought that HE had to post letters of rec. I think the new system, while better than the previous one, still has some bugs in it. The missing deadline is problematic whether it is Feb. 28 or April 1st.

we have deadlines?

Surely the deadline has to be sooner rather than later because someone has to review and evaluate the materials. But why not tell us when? Is there a timeline somewhere? I looked on the website - nothing. I asked my students. They did not know. I agree that there was confusion among the students whether they uploaded the letters or whether we did. I can't understand why this is so difficult. Every other college has a system that works.

Also - why is presence at the ceremony required? I had a few students who were insulted by the "threat" that if they could not attend the ceremony they would "forfeit' their scholarships - and yet no date is given for the ceremony. Many of my students work, have family obligations, etc. Why do we make attendance at a ceremony the critical deciding factor? What does this suggest about what we really value?

Just opened my college email after a weekend offline. Egads. Yes - when IS the deadline for letters of rec? Has it already passed as a student has already told me? Or?

The new scholarship system addresses some issues that were present in the previous one - and creates new problems along the way. It is as if no one took it for a test drive before they put it on the road. I expect the result to be the same:over- rewarding of favorites; cramming decisions into a few days; no one really knowing ever who got what or why; qualified deserving students overlooked because decision-makers do not know how to recognize true merit and the system culls them out for odd reasons, etc. Never expect to see a sheet of paper that tells you who won what. They are still deciding the day before.

And yes, the language about mandatory attendance at an event whose date and time are as yet undetermined, is insulting. It prioritizes a photo op over all else.

Expect a clarifying email soon, one that suggests they discovered this on their own without help from anyone else.

Yes, the new scholarship system is just like the old system (cue that Who song).

There are no checks and balances as someone has already suggested. The word is that previous regime was so awful whatever we do will be better so don't criticize. In the end though, they will do the same thing. They already have,

Clarifying email just arrived. As a "courtesy," faculty and staff will be allowed to upload letters through Friday. Be grateful. No mention of their omission of a deadline.
