Saddleback College Gauchos moving to South America?

The OC Weekly's Gustavo Arellano reports:

Saddleback College Students Seek to De-Mexicanize their School's Gaucho Mascot
…[S]omething good is being attempted by students by Saddleback College's Diversity Student Council (DSC). They are trying to have the school modify its Gauchos mascot, which currently looks more like a Mexican greaser than a cowboy of the pampas.

The group wrote a resolution, recently passed by the Associated Student Government's senate, that calls for what I wrote in the last sentence. "Whereas, Saddleback College, an educational establishment, reiterates institutional racism through caricatures of a minority that misrepresent it, and Whereas, the inaccurate depiction of the Gaucho suggests a climate of tolerance towards stereotype," the resolution states before asking for the "halt of Saddleback College merchandise and school publications with the image of the current Gaucho."….(continued)
(As Gustavo has acknowledged, we wrote about the "Gaucho" problem back in 2006: The Lariat “Gaucho”, Feb. 8, 2006)

Oucho gaucho - ha ha ha.

I wouldn't mind if they offered up a real Argentian gaucho - sort of in the Antonio Bandera mold...but this fat cross-eyed bandito has got to go.
I'm glad the students are stepping up.

You watch. They'll find appropriate "Gaucho" images and then everything will be set. Then somebody'll say, "But what connection do we have with dang South American cowboys?" Yeah, then, students will protest and we'll be right back to the Gaucho Bandito. But at least then somebody will recommend the college adopting that great "Frito Bandito" song, mutatis mutandis. We'll see students singin' that song at football games, wearing sombreros and big black mustaches. It will be so perfect. Our heads will pop.

What about that mascot to beat all other mascots, the fierce and frightening IVC Laser????

(so very lame)

How embarrassing this current "mascot" is - didn't anyone else notice? It's cringe-worthy, even in OC, isn't it?

We’ve written about mascotry previously and often. Check out, for instance, Wanted: a new mascot for IVC and Stupid mascots. The latter sports some fine IVC mascot ideas, including the IVC "aphids."

Hey, whatever happened to that IVC effort to find a new mascot? Wasn't the Dean of PE involved in that? I recall that he solicited ideas.

I believe there has been a mistake.
Wasn't it supposed to be the Grouchos? Mustache, semi-duck walk, witticisms, and don't forget the sub-mascot Harpo, represented by horn solos in the marching band.

Also, what ever happened to Elaine, Peter Morrison's wife?
