About 30 protest at UCI (OC Register)
UCI students protested again on Wednesday as more than 30 people laid down in front of the student center in a silent demonstration condemning recent racist incidents at UC San Diego and UC Davis.
. . .
The main purpose of the event, organized by the campus Black Student Union, was to raise awareness of the incidents and criticize hate speech; however demonstrators also repeated the demands from the Feb. 24 campus protest where UCI police arrested 17 students and workers for staging a sit-in at Chancellor Michael Drake's office.
. . .
Students are also planning a mass "walk out" and rally at noon on Thursday to protest University of California budget cuts and fee hikes.

In what has been billed as a statewide day of action, similar demonstrations are planned for Thursday at UC and CSU campuses.
Towson U. Defends Firing of Adjunct Who Used Racist Term to Describe His Status (Chronicle of Higher Ed)
Towson University issued a statement today in which its provost, Marcia G. Welsh, defended the institution's decision to fire an adjunct art professor for characterizing himself as "a nigger on the corporate plantation" in discussing his employment rights during a class. Ms. Walsh's statement contradicts assertions by the adjunct professor, Allen Zaruba, that he had used the racist term as part of an academic discussion. The statement says: "Towson University strongly supports and upholds academic freedom in the classroom and across our learning community; however, such patently offensive language on the part of university employees will not be tolerated and does not reflect our value system."

I always like Jason's photos. And Roy's, too, for that matter.

Thanks, ES. I also hope to see some of Roy's IVC photos tomorrow? I'll be on hand to bring more UCI madness...

So for the fired teacher, context means nothing.

Red Emma will be out there today at UCI - Jason, try to find him. I've got him looking for you. He's wearing his blue AFT t-shirt, jeans and red hightops.
