Thanks to Trustee Tom Fuentes, a couple of years ago,
future felon Mike Carona headlined IVC's 9-11 Commemoration.
The fellow was very pious. Like Tom.

Pretty much the same guest list as last year. I wonder what other similarities there will be? I especially love how these traditions begin, so that when one thinks of possibly canceling some year in the future, they may be branded as unpatriotic. Said stale tradition will then continue unmovingly each year for the sake of preserving tradition.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Does a moment of silence need to publicized? Is the commemoration of the 8th anniversary of this tragedy a political expectation?

And staunch too. Carona was very staunch. Like Duvall.

These ceremonies provide marvelous photo-ops for politicians. The latter are inevitably shown praying and wrapping themselves in the American flag. This is the main explanation for these events, I think. But you know that.

(During the event two years ago, Mathur and the trustees actually wrapped themselves up in Mike Carona. Five pigs in a blanket--of corruption, racism, hypocrisy, etc.)

I'm not usually very cynical (I'm a moderate in that regard). But in the case of these pseudo-patriotic affairs, full-tilt cynicism is appropriate, I think.

I recall Carona's (late) arrival on that day. He was treated like a rock star. He seemed to act like one, knowing just what to do to satisfy his many fans. After his "heartfelt" address, there were the usual photo-ops. The likes of Dave Lang rushed to get their chance to be besprinkled with patriotic fairy dust.

I would not extend my cynicism to the audience, however. They seem to imagine that things are what they appear to be. I suspect, however, that many of these earnest patriots would appreciate inclusion in the ceremony of the burning of an Muslim effigy, followed by another prayer "to our Lord God."

Amen.

I have always admired this photo of the line up of guys in suits and ties behind Carona at the podium.
