The "flesh-eating cart from Hell" and other tales

ABSURDITY HAPPENS, boy. There I was, reading Don Wagner’s ultra-peevish letter to the editor in the Lariat, when a maintenance worker walked up to me, complaining that the college has run out of paper towels for the restrooms. “How can that be?” I asked. It can be all right, he said.

“Didn’t Wayne know he’d run out?”

“Well, we told ‘em. But I guess he didn’t order enough.”

He told me to check out the restrooms, so I headed to SSC and I managed to get a picture inside the ladies’ restroom over there.

It looked like a bomb had hit it.

How does it work with women anyway? Is it like: “Hey, there’s no paper towels! So, naturally, we’ve gotta trash this dump!”

Now, I’m the first to admit that men are dirt compared to women, but that said, men don’t trash restrooms just because the towels ran out, not in my experience.

Anyway, Wayne and the boys are now scrambling to get some paper towels. Years ago, before Wayne, we once ran low on TP, so the women bitterly complained while the men just looked bewildered. In response, the head of maintenance sent over about 20 rolls: one per faculty member. “Here,” said a note.

Meanwhile, the offices in my part of A200 are freezing cold. I think I spotted an icicle hangin’ from Jeanne’s nose yesterday. It was like we were at Frostbite Falls in the Yukon, waiting for the Winter stage.

The maintenance guy told me about the Flesh-Eating Cart From Hell, too. He had first told me about this legendary vehicle months ago. He kept going on and on about the danger and the hazard. “I don’t get it,” I said. “How can a goddam golf cart pose any danger?”

“All the edges are ragged, and that causes injuries,” he said. “One guy already hurt his knee. Pretty soon, somebody’s gonna be out on workman’s comp!”

Today, I went out to take a look at the thing. It looked pretty ragged all right. Workers had stuck some kind of foam thingy next to the steering column to protect their legs. All the edges of the cart were missing some kind of protective plastic or vinyl, and so it was like a Russian jet liner. The windshield was some cheap clear plastic secured with duct tape. It was strictly Third World, man.

I looked up and the maintenance guy was shaking his head: “It’s just a matter of time,” he said.

He explained that Wayne had been told about this atrocity, like, a year ago, but still nothing has been done. We stared at the thing. “It’s just a matter of time,” he said again, shaking his head gravely.

Well, I guess so.

I was going to tell you about something significant that happened today, but now I’ve forgotten what it was. Something about a blinding light maybe? No, that can't be it.

Anyway, I ended up staying late, and I drove home in the dark, onto the toll road, past the friendly toll lady, down El Toro Road, up to my little place against the canyon wall. I was greeted by one pissed off cat.

“What is your problem, dude! I’ve been alone here all day!” she yammered, even before I entered. I nearly laughed.

Yeah, but she got happy real quick. I gave her her blob of cat food and she went at it like a hopped up weasel. Almost immediately, she puked on my foot, leaving a big fibrous log there. It felt like a Quarter-pounder.

But it was OK. Really. —CW

Its amazing that Wayne can by everything else but cant see how important it is to protect the custodians from injuring themselves on this cart. The custodians know that Wayne is still creating a hostile enviorment for them and will continue to do so.As for the plastic being used for a winshield, other carts have cheap plastic. All the carts that had their windows replaced with the generic plastic remain on these carts, except for the one of the grounds which the plastic window blew off in the last wind storm we had.

something needs to be done in that department. it is not the workers because i always see them doing something. management is the cause of the maintenance department falling apart. Its it so hard for management and their workers to get together and try and work something out? i heard thru the grapevine that wayne is a really arrogant man that thinks his ideas are the greatest.

It is difficult to believe how much energy is invested into the campaign of making Wayne Ward the "Root of the Problem". The man is simply trying to do his job. I actually give credit to the man who has to lead an incompetent custodial team (if you can even call it a team). Do the custodians come to the workplace to work or waste time gossiping and creating more of a problem. Custodians complain about a hostile work environment, but they should stop to and reflect upon the thought that every individual lives the life he chooses to live. I hate to say it, but a chain is as strong as its weakest link and if these custodians don't get to work rather than wasting time, that chain is going to break. It's time for them to look at the glass as half full rather than half empty and appreciate their jobs. Nobody in this world will ever completely love their boss no matter who he or she is, that's just life. Now,deal with it!

So what about the paper towels SNAFU? Are you suggesting that that isn't Wayne's fault? That it is the custodians' fault? And what about those urinals in B100 that have been covered in plastic all semester? Do you think the custodians neglected to order the necessary parts? I could go on all day. But do facts matter to you? Will you defend anyone who happens to be a manager? Have you decided a priori that where there are tensions between manager and employees, it is the employees who are at fault? Why don't the many indicative facts matter to you?

It is my understanding that a manager is in charge of running a department and to do this effectively, he or she must rely on a lead person for insight on the department. In regards to the paper towel drama, it was not Wayne's fault. Isn't the lead person supposed to give the manager sufficient notice that inventory is running low in order for an order to be placed in a timely manner? Same thing with the urinals...or is Wayne supposed to have background in plumbing as well in order to be a succesful manager. I think not. This is why the campus is composed of instructors, clerks, custodians, plumbers, deans, etc...each one specializes and relies on each other in order to effectively run a school. The problem is that you just have a hard time acknowledging that there's a chain of command and you must follow it. Face it, you will always have someone above you, no matter what position you do...custodian or manager.

Outsource the custodial services and your problems will disappear.

it's nice to hear phil stand up for wayne. he should, he makes over 65000 to do so

Anonymous said...

It is not the lead who made the mistake with the hand towels. Wayne was told by more then one person not to cut the order. We have been doing the job long before Wayne.

Anonymous said...

wayne seems to cut lots of corners and as long as it's not in a100 nobody cares. right mr. r(pres.)

THE MANAGER AND THE DIRECTOR, KWEW ABOUT THE PAPER TOWELS BACK IN JULY, BUT GOOD GUY WAYNE DECIDED TO SAVE MONEY AND HE GAVE $180,000.00 BACK TO THE DISTRICT. WAYNE IS SUCH A NICE GUY. THE DISTRICT LOVES HIM AND SO DOES PHIL HIS MANAGER...

Anonymous said...

wayne was told that the paper towels were running a long time ago. that's not enough time?

11:38 and 1:51
a few years back this campus looked good and I still see the same maintenance crew. wayne came aboard and everything went down. So who's fault is it? It does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Anonymous said...

1:51 is six months enough time for the chain of command to get to WAYNE to buy some filters for the urinals or replace them with the old water urinals, or maybe he needs more time, since you seem like an itellegent person maybe you could talk to your friend WAYNE and he'll listen to you...

HOW COME THE DIRECTOR OF MAINTANCE DRIVES A REAL NICE CART, AND THE CUSTODIANS AND THE GROUNDS KEEPERS DRIVE CARTS THAT ARE VERY OLD,AND VERY UNSAFE?????

Anonymous said...

Poor planing on the part of management is the reason the college ran out of paper towells. If management would let the leads and the workers do there work, IVC would look alot nicer inside and out.

Anybody ready to challenge the custodians about Wayne. Wayne is a lier, a thief, he retaliates even when he is wrong, hese not man enough to admit hese wrong, hese to busy with Phil creating even a more hostile enviorment. Wayne I know you can sense your defeat coming its time to bow out now while you can and find another job. Dont let what I just said make you do something you will regret be smart for once.

Anonymous said...

Wayne was told about the paper towels a long time ago. What kind of man would head a warning and knot do something to correct it only a man like wayne. Wayne is to proud to take advice about anything and to pridefull to notice when hese wrong or do somethiong abouy it. Wayne has gone to a point of know return.

Anonymous said...

sounds like people are on to you two(wayne and phil)

Come to work, do your job to the best of your ability with the resources you've got and go home! Grow up guys! Get the facts straight before you make accusations. Rumors are rarely true. Consider the source.

It takes only three thing to make a campus shine....Soap....Water...and a little pride in ones work.

Anonymous said...

A MAN JUST GOT FIRED TODAY. HE WORKED HIS ASS OFF SETTING UP FOR THE WEEKEND EVENT. WAYNE AND PHIL...CONGRATULATIONS ON HOW YOU WASH YOUR HANDS WITH AN EXCELLENT WORKER.

Anonymous said...

4:24pm you also need paper towels and keys and if they started having classes outside this campus would look a lot cleaner... from the inside???

Anonymous said...

Phil you have now intered into something you should have stayed out of. Both you and Wayne got rid of someone that was a hard worker just to cover your mistakes. I wish people really would ask questions about you, because I know a ton of people who you have turned into your enemy that would love to tell the truth about you and I mean not just in F&M but also people in you own level. You ride around on your cart like your the HNIC on campus and really your just and under cover wimp. What you did today started something I hope your ready for. What kind of a man returns 180,000 back to look good but doesnt have money to run his department only a stupid man.

Anonymous said...

YOU WAYNE SUPPORTERS ARE YOU READY TO CHALLENGE THE F$M CREW ABOUT WAYNE.ARE YOU READY TO MEET US IN A DISCUSSION, THEN STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND GET YOU FULL.

Anonymous said...

who got fired??

Anonymous said...

I just heard who got fired, and what a shame, it was the new lead custodian. This man did everything in his power to do a professional job. I guess it is easier to put fault on someone else, right wayne. Because we all know who signs the final approval on purchases. How many times have we come to you with a purchase that you cut in HALF. (RUN TO FAIL)

Anonymous said...

Fire them all.

Anonymous said...

A lead who works, so what does Wayne do, Fires him. Great work. Du

Anonymous said...

This mans only goal is to HURT HIS WORKERS!!! How many more people?? If the administration does'nt do something soon, it will cost a lot more then just someones job!!$$$$$ So wake up and smell the coffee.. Does this district really need another law suit. I think not!!

Anonymous said...

that's cold blooded, though god is watching

Anonymous said...

So tell me, were there any problems in the Custodial Department before Wayne came? If not, why not just get rid of him?

Anonymous said...

I have noticed that every time that there is a issue with Wayne and the custodial crew someone always writes (contract custodians or outsource or get rid of custodians) but you need to know this that if custodians are contracted it violates state law and if they can contract one classified position then look out other classified employees your next.

Anonymous said...

Duct taped carts... hmmm... sounds like a third world manager's solution to the problem.

Anonymous said...

11:06
there is always some kind of problem just like any other department. but never to this extreme. this department is going dowhill. things are way too out of control and i cant believe this man still gets away with everything he does. Glenn, dedicate one day and go around asking the whole F&M department whats going on. You will be amazed on how many people work with no interest in their work and it is all because morality is down the drain!

Anonymous said...

Their is always to sides to the story I know, but only one answer and that answer is get rid of the problem. Wayne says that the campus is dirty and that the custodians should do more. Wayne has two people cleanong the B-Quad at night and only one of them is their for only 2.5 hours and then goes and cleans the CDC. Wayne has the custodians doing set ups everyday and expects them to also clean the campus and when he gets complaints he gets on the custodians and the lead worker, im sorry but they cant be in two places at the same time. (I will tell you more about Wayne Ward stay tune readers.)

Anonymous said...

Are you their readers. Today Wayne switched the custodians around again. Now get this he has one of the custodians cleaning one of the PE area and one guy in the B-200 area. Normally in order to vacuume the carpets or sweep the class room you must have atleast two people in the BQuad EARLY IN THE MORNING TO ATLEAST VACUUME THE CARPETS IN B-100 unfortunately this has changed because of Wayne so if any of you readers work in the B-Quad surprise you may not get your carpet vacuumed or the bathroom cleaned so please dont blame the custodians because I have just told you the truth. We may have to let the custodians figure this out because Wayne sure cant. Another good job by the Directof of F&M you sure are a smart guy Wayne. Wayne supporters I hope your eyes are beggining to open.

Anonymous said...

11:38 Why dont you spend a day with the custodians without contacting Wayne and see just how smart he is. You dont need to have a PHD to see that wayne doesnt know what hese talking about. This came straight from Waynes mouth. He told the custodians when ever they walk in to a bathroom and it looks clean just pass it by and go to the next. I dont know about you but I dont want to sit on a seat that tons of kids have been sitting on do you. Dont you think that these bathrooms should be sanitized if possible each day or do you like to sit on a dirty toilet. Just because you cant see the germs doesnt mean their not their.Think about that and respond to me I would love to here your answer.

This is starting to get VERY ugly. If someone with some sense does not get involved someone might get hurt. We've seen it before. Our President should be that person.

Anonymous said...

The president of this college is not going to openly involve himself in the B&G war. This is the man who can't even get keys distributed. This is the man who wants to keep police invisible on campus, nevermind that a student died in the parking lot or that someone blasted those B100 toilets. This is the man who thinks a fine arts theater is "the face" of the college. A couple dozen filthy toilets mean nothing to him. Ever notice the gloss on that entry floor to A100, right next to his office? He could eat his lunch off that floor. The floors that students walk on? Not his business.

Anonymous said...

Its me your information to Wayne Ward. All you Wayne supporters will be supporting the next Director at IVC. Please ask me any Question about him and if I can answer it I will.

Anonymous said...

Today Wayne did something that took pressure to do. Which is a shock to me because you would think if he was over safety he would have done it already. He was forced to fix the flesh eating cart. Why does it take so much pressure to get Wayne to put strips along the edge of the cart to protect the custodians, can anybody answer that? If its money thats a lie because he has been buying tile and other things for the school. Know its because its the cart the custodiabs are using. Wayne was warned about this cart.

Anonymous said...

I just want to say that I am reading all these comments with great interest. It helps to know what you guys are dealing with and I appreciate your willingness to communicate the situation.

Maybe Chunk can do an update on the demise of the flesh-eating cart.

What do you think, Chunk?

Why is Tony S always riding around from side to side wasting time, and spending so much time visiting a certain female frind? Is this the reason he works so much OT? So he can catch up on all the work he doesn't do during the week? He's getting a good deal! It must be nice to be Wayne's favorite that he gets away with doing nothing.

Anonymous said...

i guess i am not the only one who see this!

Anonymous said...

I thought OT is intended for those who have too much work that it can't be completed within the time during the regular work week? Why is it that Tony works so much OT yet he is able to take so many days off during the work week and he can take off early as he pleases? Talk about milking the system.

Anonymous said...

That's true! Tony is always seen driving around from side to side, visiting with his close lady friend "LaNelle" and yet he has so much work that he has to work overtime, or so he claims...Another thing, why is it that he and his "lady friend" always drive off in the district's truck to go "pick up lunch" or so they claim? How odd...the worse part is that they get away with it.
