"A-Hole" at the Radisson

A couple of hours ago, Allan Bartlett over on Red County Blog blogged effusively from the Newport Beach Radisson where, as you surely know by now, the Western Conservative Action Carnival is going on with the help of our boys Tom Fuentes, Don Wagner, and Beelzebub (SOCCCD trustees).

Says Al,
Former KFI talk show host John Ziegler was conducting an interview with American Conservative Union President David Keene. At some point in the interview, Mr Keene didn't like Zig's line of questions and ended the interview.
Apparently, really real conservatives have their doubts about Keene, owing to his association with Arlen Specter (Heaven forfend!) and his recent unkind words about Sarah Palin’s intellectual attainments. Gosh!

Eventually, Ziegler—who, you’ll recall, is one of the biggest assholes on the planet—made a spectacle of himself following Keene around with his equipment. So “the Zig” was escorted off the hotel property, despite having a gig there (on a panel—probably about being an asshole) later in the day. He didn’t show!

According to Bartlett, earlier, some guy named Floyd Brown called for the President’s impeachment, whereupon another denizen of the Radisson, Ed Morrisey, scribbled on his blog, blasting Brown for so inappropriate a suggestion. Then (says Bartlett), some third asshole sitting next to Morrisey called Morrisey rude for blasting Brown!

Wow, these Repubs sound like drunken Dems at a convention! Let’s hope Bartlett keeps spillin’ those beans. Anything could happen!

UPDATE (Sunday, Oct. 18):

I found an update of sorts today by someone named Tommy Christopher on a right-wing site called Mediaite:

Western CPAC – John Ziegler Ejected After Dust-up with ACU Chair:
…Keene gets up and tries to end the interview. Ziegler follows Keene, continuing to question him about the FedEx incident and his support for Arlen Specter. Keene becomes agitated and tries to grab Ziegler’s mic away from him.

Ziegler sticks with him for a good 5 minutes more after that, even as Keene calls him a “scumbag,” tells him “I’m not going to hit you, but I’d like to,” then says, “You’re an asshole. Got that on the air? Asshole!”

Keene then ducks into a speaking event, leaving Ziegler to heckle him from just outside the room by offering him $20 to write a pro-Palin op-ed.

Ziegler’s speaking spot is then canceled, and he is told he’s being expelled from the conference. When I spoke to John last night, he told me that he could hear conference organizer Jim Lacy’s comments as he ate lunch, and couldn’t take it. In the video, Lacy is explaining Ziegler’s exit to the crowd, when John comes onstage to correct the record. Amazingly, he somehow manages to get ahold of a live microphone, and proceeds to tell the entire conference that David Keene is a “sellout” before being escorted from the stage by security.

Pious turds in a punchbowl

Recently, we reported that Don Wagner, Tom Fuentes and some of their well-known right-wing pals are gathering this weekend (yesterday and today) for the “Western Conservative Political Action Conference” at the Radisson in Newport Beach.

As Spencer Kornhaber noted yesterday (What Are Birthers Doing Hanging With Top Repubs In Newport?), this particular coven includes, among others, the Birthers!
Most notably there's Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation, who's a lawyer in the same lawsuit as [Orly] Taitz filed in Santa Ana federal court…. He'll be moderating a talk [Saturday] on "The Rule of Nebulous Law." Chapman Law dean John Eastman will be participating. ¶ Floyd Brown will also be giving a talk at a private dinner. He's a GOP activist who has helmed campaigns to get the mainstream media to cover the birth certificate "issue." … Kreep … is literally one of the most important and evangelical "eligilbity activists" out there.... ¶ Jim Lacy, the longtime South County [GOP] hitman, is helming … the conference. He also was involved in the early years of Kreep's foundation and was responsible for much of the "Obama-is-a-Muslim" rumormongering during the 2008 campaign….
Why doesn’t the mainstream Christian contingent of the GOP get more riled about the craziness and stupidity and lyin’-sack’o’shittery that’s taken over their party? Nearly all of that stinky stuff seems to be spewin' from the Christian Right, people like Wagner and Fuentes, pious believers who wear their Christianity—and their brass knucks—on their sleeves.

Mainstreamers shouldn't have any problem spotting them. They’re hard to miss, like turds in a punchbowl. Listen for endless prayer. I wonder how many times they'll be invoking the Lord this weekend?

If the Lord had a sense of humor (seemingly not), He'd deposit some of His best fire 'n' brimstone (any time now!) on the Radisson—and maybe "accidentally" wipe out the rest of Newport Beach to boot. 'Cept for the seals and stuff. (And the Blue Beet.)

In yesterday’s OC Register:

'Fight back,' implores student who sued teacher
Chad Farnan, 17, urges youth to stand up for Christian and conservative rights.

Mission Viejo high school senior Chad Farnan, who successfully sued his former history teacher two years ago for disparaging Christians in class, implored Christians and conservatives to band together to fight for their rights at a GOP campaign fundraiser Friday night.

"Now is the time to fight back, so our rights as Christians and conservatives can be taken back," said Farnan, 17, a senior at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo.

Farnan, a Republican, delivered the short speech in front of an audience of about 200 people at the Irvine Marriott hotel during a campaign fundraiser for Shawn Black, a Republican candidate for the 70th Assembly District in Orange County.

Aaaargh!!!

The other day, Rebel Girl called me. She had been reading student papers and so, naturally, she was peevish and unpleasant and misanthropic. I just let her vent.

At one point, she simply screamed, “Aaaargh!!!”

"Uh-huh," I said.

A young writer and friend emailed me today about his ongoing undergraduate adventures at the UC. He passed along this email sent to students from the instructor of his Literary Journalism class:
Dear Class:

Bad news.

I've read through a bunch of the papers and one of the strongest impressions is that the general grasp on grammar is poor. This is a shame, as for the most part, your arguments are at least adequate. However, bad grammar makes it difficult to follow an argument. I keep trying to revise your sentences. Since we're in a literary journalism class and not a comp class, I don't feel it's my job to correct basic grammatical mistakes.

The instructor advises students to run a correction program before turning in their final drafts. He closes with this remark:
You are, after all, considering spending your lives in a field where all that matters is writing well.
Hmmm. That’s pretty understated. I bet what he was really thinking was “Aaaargh!!!”
I’ve been grading student writing all afternoon. Some of it isn’t bad. Most of it is dreadful.

For this assignment, students were supposed to explain a point made by David Hume concerning reports of miracles. Such reports, he said, can be explained as (1) true reports of actual miracles (headless horsemen, healing waters) or as (2) false reports instigated by deception, such as hallucinations or illusions or trickery. Hume noted that the latter is much more likely than the former.

Here are some student “explanations” of Hume’s point:
● The first explaination is that we accepted that mirracle happened and some of the law of nature have gone crazy. The second explain is that the person who report the extrardinary event try to decieve us or himself wa decieve. [I especially like the "wa decieve."]

● [Hume’s suggestion] is the mental measurement that one assesses in their mind when they are told of an extraordinary even that has defied the laws of nature. ["Mental measurement that one assesses in their mind." Wow.]

● Hume sought to explain the truth or to give the most logical explanation to certain conditions. [This was the entirety of the kid's explanation. Wow.]

● fund what Hume was saying on Miracles was somewhat confusing. Because is it a law, or did God step in and save us from an Air plane crash or what. But i guess what he was trying to say that it is not valid. How do we really no that if it was a miracle or was it a blessing from God. [Yeah, how do we really no?]

AAAArrrrrrggggghhhhhh!!!

[K]reeps and demagogues in Newport Beach

WRITTEN BY CHUNK WHEELER - posted by Rebel Girl.

Gazing as usual at his navel, the OC Weekly's Matt Coker reminds us that the Western Conservative Political Action Conference will be held in tony Newport Beach this weekend (Friday and Saturday) at the Radisson.

Among the participants: Andrew Breitbart, Jim Lacy, Tom Fuentes, Bruce Herschesohn, Sir Eldon Griffiths, Governor Tim Pawlenty, Meg Whitman, Chuck DeVore, Jeff Miller, Ralph Reed, Dana Rohrabacher, Ed Royce, Steve Poizner, Barry Goldwater, Jr., Gary Kreep, Don Wagner, John Ziegler, John Eastman, Michelle Steel, Matt/Jubal Cunningham and Jon Fleischman.

If there's a God, this dark assemblage will attract thunder and lightning and miasmic vortices. Imagine all of their dismal deeds momentarily projected onto the hideous, dark clouds above Fashion Island. Imagine the fire, the sulphur, the Fuentes.

The world will surely pop.

Former Mike "the racist" Carona appointee Jon "the dolt" Fleishman "coos"( Matt's word) that someone named Andrew Breitbart will be giving the opening comments for a panel Fleishman will be on. According to Matt, Breitbart, a former Drudge Report staffer, once described himself as "Matt Drudge's bitch."

The "bitch" of a bastard? How unseemly.

This Breitbart fellow is shopping for a publisher of his new book, which "shows conservatives a new way to fight back at the three big pillars of liberalism: academia, media and Hollywood."

We at the community colleges form the widest part of that first pillar, you know.

Atlas didn't shrug: Don Wagner

Matt Cunningham of Red County informs us that Don Wagner’s campaign has announced:
Today, the Atlas PAC, a conservative free-market advocacy organization, announced its support of Don Wagner's bid for the 70th Assembly District.

"The problems we are facing in our state and national economies, are not problems that can be solved with government intervention. Only free-markets can correct inequities in our financial structure but that must be coupled with a strong commitment to fiscal prudence in our governance. Reckless spending to satisfy special interests mitigates the impact of the market's ability to correct," said Lee Lowery, chairman of Atlas PAC. "Don understands how pro-growth policies will improve California's competitiveness while improving the lives of its citizens."

"I am honored to be endorsed by the Atlas Pac," said Wagner. "The Atlas PAC has always been on the frontlines fighting for free-market principles. I share their vision and look forward to fighting with them against needless government intervention in our economy."

The Atlas PAC Endorsements Committee examines a candidate's dedication to advancing a fiscally conservative, pro-business agenda—minimizing government regulation and taxation of individuals and businesses, eliminating inappropriate and wasteful government spending, and allowing the free market to reward initiative and entrepreneurship.

Don Wagner and his wife, Megan, and their three children live in Irvine. He is a graduate of UCLA and the University of California, Hastings College of Law. Don has been elected to three consecutive terms on the Board of Trustees of the South Orange County Community College District, and currently serves as the Board's president. Don was a founder of the Orange County chapter of the Federalist Society, a nationwide organization of 40,000 conservative lawyers, law students, and scholars dedicated to preserving the rule of law from activist courts.

Nerd fee

Here's an odd story from this morning's LA Times:

UC may hike tuition for some undergraduate majors

…As part of a plan to plug UC's battered budget, the regents may vote as early as next month on the controversial, tradition-breaking proposal to require engineering undergraduates, along with those studying business, to pay $900 more a year than the rest of the student body. That would be in addition to the $2,514 systemwide fee increase all students are likely to see by next fall.

Revenue-hungry UC officials say the two fields were chosen because salaries for their faculty members are significantly higher than the rest and because students majoring in those subjects tend to land well-paid jobs after graduation….

Evidently, this sort of thing is fairly common in other states.
