Campuses Remember Mikel Anthony Williams and Carlos Salas, Victims of Violent Deaths (Navel Gazing; Matt Coker)

Each of the South Orange County Community College District's two main campuses is dealing with the recent tragic death of a beloved student.
Irvine Valley College adult learner Mikel Anthony Williams, 55, became the 10th murder victim in Anaheim on Aug. 30. Newly enrolled Saddleback College student Carlos Salas was skateboarding to his Laguna Niguel home early Sept. 7 when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver and dragged 25 feet. The 20-year-old later died at the hospital....

Big Mike..

Here's what I remember about Mike.He was always smiling and talking about how he went out and supported the Homeless. We would talk about the Lord and how we could help each other with our ministries and our callings. He also loved school and was making big improvements on his weight.

I am shocked but not dismayed. He was a man of great courage and drive.

sad as they are, it's nice to see these stories get some notice. I wish we had an IVC newspaper which could cover our campus issues in more depth. Will there be a service for Mike on campus?

The story of Mike's life on campus reminds me that the college does more than teach.

We should be proud of our staff and teachers who go beyond like this and of the students like Mike who work harder than any of us can know.

Yes, Mike (and so many others) benefit from teachers and staff who in the course of their average work day do "go beyond."

Mikel was a fixture first in the Reading Center and second in the Writing Center. He LOVED IVC and the Faculty. I last talked to him about a month before his passing. I will alwyas remember him saying with a huge smile, "my dream is take Ms. Melanie Haeri's Reading 174 class". He did enroll in this class.
