Irvine Valley College Commencement

This year's Commencement was held behind our new Performing Arts Center. The weather was perfect.

Today's keynote speaker was Dr. Sharon V. Salinger, Dean, Division of Undergraduate Education, University of California, Irvine.

I thought her speech was quite good. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, even the terribly staunch persons behind her.

Lots of people showed up. It was a big success.

Student speaker Thomas Feistel.

Naturally, when Chancellor Mathur pulled out his dog-eared copy of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, some took the opportunity to snooze.

The Chancellor eventually quoted Will Rogers: "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

I bet he has that one plastered on his bathroom wall.

Lots of smiles.

All the action was in the shade--comfortable for dignitaries and such, challenging for photographers.

The Performing Arts Center looked pretty sharp. I'm getting used to that odd color that Glenn chose. I think I like it.

In the lobby of the PAC.

I've got lots of pics, but little time. Maybe I'll add a few later.

Congratulations students!

Yes, it was very successful. The campus looked great. Too bad about the Bartlett's though.

Salinger was great.

The winner of the Raghu quotation pool scored $225.

7 quotations and one defensive remark about his dependency on quotations -- pretty good.

I love your pics as usual but Lisa looks a bit washed out.

They should have seen if all the retirees were present before making Glen read off there names and stand there waiting.

Neither Bishopp showed up nor did Peter or Kate.

Good photopgrahs. I always like your big sky shots. The college looks so fine when you photograph it.

And yes, the speaker from UCI was terrific. It was a real speech - not the usual platitudes about higher education - it WAS higher education.

I liked the new site but I was in the shade.

I just loved that the speaker used the Obama's name at least five times. Tom F. and his boys must have just loved that.

I agree, 8:58. The references to the president were so refreshing - the first time we have heard his name at official event at the college. It almost felt scandalous - which says something about the atmosphere that they foster here.

Remember Glenn's ruling that we couldn't watch the Obama inagural unless we could provide proof that we either had "permission" or there was "zero impact' on college services? Veiled threat if you ask me.

I don't think they were told Obama was president until Salinger mentioned it. They looked shocked.

Better outside than in the gym.
The picture of the guy sleeping by the stage is priceless.

Poor Vince... he had to stand out in the blazing sun the entire time videotaping.

It's good for him. He could use a tan.
