Grad student contract approved

UC grad students approve new contract (SacBee)
Graduate students who work at the University of California have voted to approve a new contract with the university, ending nearly six months of negotiations.
. . .
The contract gives graduate student workers a minimum 2 percent annual salary increase for each of the next three years, with additional annual salary increases of up to 2 percent if the California state budget improves; more generous health care coverage; a three-fold increase in UC's contribution toward child care; tuition remission for workers who are California residents and partial tuition remission for those who are not….

Wayne State U. Cancels Diversity Award Named for Reporter (Chronicle of Higher Education)
Wayne State University will no longer offer the Helen Thomas Spirit of Diversity in Media Award because of recent comments made by the journalist, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Thomas, a Wayne State alumna, said during a speech in Dearborn that “Congress, the White House and Hollywood, Wall Street are owned by the Zionists. No question. They put their money where their mouth is.”
Thomas resigned in June as a Hearst Newspaper columnist over comments she made calling on Israelis to get “out of Palestine.”....

Trustee John Williams turns in his resignation

Went to the post-election Faculty Association shindig tonight. Got there late, just as trustee John Williams explained that he had turned in his resignation as trustee this afternoon—and that Monday's meeting will be his last.
He said that it was time. Don't know more than that, really.
We previously reported that Williams would be resigning soon, though we had guessed that that would occur in January.
In attendance: Chancellor Gary Poertner, IVC's Glenn Roquemore and Craig Justice, Saddleback's Tod Burnett (I think), trustee Marcia Milchiker (and husband), trustee Nancy Padberg (and husband), trustee John Williams, trustee T.J. Prendergast, the usual suspects among unionists, et al.
There were others, I think, but I arrived too late to hear the introductions, so dunno.
Monday's board meeting should be interesting.

Iowa Republicans ♥ sabbaticals (NOT)

Iowa Republicans Target Sabbaticals (Inside Higher Ed)
Iowa Republicans, who are about to control the state House of Representatives, are calling for public universities to stop awarding sabbaticals, saying that the state can no longer afford them, the Associated Press reported. "It seems to be tough budgetary times. Why should the taxpayers of Iowa be paying to basically give these folks a year off from teaching?" said Kraig Paulsen, who is about to become speaker of the House. Edwin Dove, president of the Faculty Senate at the University of Iowa, said that while on sabbaticals in 2009, professors wrote 26 books; published 147 research articles; created and updated nearly 100 classes; and submitted 50 grant applications.

Negatory districtular reverie (while we wait for real news)

You might have noticed that we’ve had little to report recently about the district or the colleges. No doubt things are happening, but we sure don’t know about ‘em.
So: here are some old posts for those who need to catch up with SOCCCD lore (or Saddleback or IVC lore).

• Is trustee Steven Frogue a Holocaust denier? ~ Let's use some abductive reasoning, shall we? When lots of former Frogue students from numerous different years—and who are not otherwise associated—converge on the same report (of holocaust denial/racially insensitive remarks), by far the best explanation is that they are reporting accurately.

• Frogue defends himself against charge that he is a Holocaust denier ~ "Am not!" he roars. Not very impressive.

• The infamous "same-sex" flier ~ Pandering to South County homophobia? We're academics and unionists! Why the hell not! It’s all true: faculty (i.e., an abysmal subset thereof) are the root of all this evil.

• Time for pie ~ Sherry Miller-White excludes yours truly amid pie @ Marie Calendars. She is in fact a lout and an idiot and an embarrassment.

• Night of the Nazi ~ Extras from "To Kill a Mockingbird" wander into the Saddleback Library. And, no, I’m not exaggerating one little bit. Hard-core racist creeps show up, and Frogue repudiates not a one of them.

• The 1998 IVC accreditation white-wash ~ Take out the negative, leave in the positive! Let's call the whole thing off! We can only speculate re which circle of hell Ray Chandos will spend eternity.

• Nazis vs. JDL thugs: oh, what a night! ~ Trustee Frogue's unsavory pals v. JDL wackos. And years before reality TV!

• Hangin' with bigwig Republicans while Nazis hide in bushes ~ Repubs and Dems agree on one thing: Nazis are bad.

• The "board's unlikely secret allies" (the union supports anti-unionists) ~ Yes, the union "leadership" brought us Don & Nancy—and even Tom! “CTA” stands for “Complete and Total Assholes.”

• Mathur censured for lying ~ That's 'cause he lied, and creeped and worse. No wonder Tom loves him so. (Note: this story never fails to inspire indecorous spewage from the Gooster. That alone proves that it’s absolutely true.)

• Bauer's court victory ~ Judge Feess spanks the district hard. Cedric and the gang are shocked, shocked! I dunno what they expected. Like the judge said, What were you people thinkin’?!

• Mathur goes after Jeff for "naming a greenhouse" ~ Displays of ruthlessness and power thrill both trustees and their tiny puppet. Proof that certain trustees--who seem human enough--are distinctly deficient in the soul department.

• The old guard's not-so-sweet charity ~ Between Tom and these guys, local sorditude competes with Falling Rome. And I won't even mention Tom's famous suitcase.

• The "Howard Hilton" ~ One of Raghu's "stars" pursues a Hilton w/ pool at IVC. Don nearly loses a limb. (Don is so glad nobody thought to take Polaroids!)

• Roy Bauer's 1st Amendment battles ~ Around these people, no decent person could resist the urge to go postal! (Oops. Didn’t mean to threaten violence!)

• Students sue district over 1st Amendment violations ~ These people won't abide complaint, not even from students. Inglorious, unAmerican bastards!

• "How rude are you!": the senates sue the district ~ In which, once again, Raghu and the Board bully the faculty. This time they get slapped back. A big victory (ultimately) in response to ugly, stupid ruthlessness—an infamy upon which our board’s lasting notoriety shall rest. Seriously.

• IVC Faculty prohibited from discussing the war ~ A college run by maroons. And think: the fundamental question was never resolved! What say you, Glenn R? Do we get to discuss the war?

• "Liberal Busybodies": Wagner takes aim at the American Library Association ~ Because you've gotta toss red meat to the knuckle-draggers once in a while, or they wander off, unled.

Southwestern: Chopra chopped

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy
• Southwestern College's Controversial President Quits (Inside Higher Ed)

San Diego's Southwestern College announced Tuesday that its embattled superintendent/president, Raj K. Chopra, would leave the community college with two years remaining on his contract. Faculty groups have been angry at Chopra's administration over issues such as the 2009 suspension of several faculty members in conjunction with their roles in protests over budget cuts, and last month's elections transformed the college's board, undermining Chopra's support there, according to local news reports.

Some day, we'll speak of SOCCCD's lurid Fuentes era

The wonderful/notorious "Stand By Our Tan" performance

Back in 2006, Republican Tan Nguyen ran against Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Nguyen’s advisor was our own (trustee) Tom Fuentes, a fellow whose notoriety rests on many misdeeds, but especially on his role in the “poll guard” incident: in 1988, as County GOP chair, he approved use of poll guards to stand near polling places in Latino neighborhoods. Nice. There was quite an uproar. The scandal cost Fuentes his gig as PR flak for the Catholic Diocese of Orange and a lawsuit tab of nearly half a million dollars.
In 2006, the Fuentes-advised Nguyen campaign got caught engaging in a similar stunt: a letter was sent to Latino voters, evidently designed to discourage their voting. As Martin Wisckol explains,
The Spanish-language letter, sent on a letterhead that mimicked the name of a prominent immigration reform group, was mailed to 14,000 voters with Latino last names who’d been born abroad. The letter prompted an immediate investigation by the state attorney general. Worried that the letter would suppress Latino voter turnout, state officials wrote those 14,000 voters encouraging them to vote and telling them to disregard the previous disguised and misleading campaign mailing.
That mailing had warned that “emigrados” could go to prison if they voted. “Emigrado” is ambiguous in Spanish. It can generally mean an emigrant – who may or may not be a U.S. citizen eligible to vote – or specifically a non-citizen in the country with a green card.
The letter also warned that “a new computerized system” would track new voters and could be accessed by “organizations that oppose immigration.”
At Chapman College, Tom was the President of the "God's Hecksters" motorcycle club
It seemed to many observers that Nguyen had illegally attempted to suppress Latino voter turnout, but that charge was never filed. “Obstruction of justice” charges, however, were filed.
As I recall, amid the initial hoopla, Nguyen’s treasurer resigned. She turned out to be IVC Foundation Director Al Tello’s wife!
Well, the wheels of justice grind slowly. Nguyen was eventually tried earlier this year, but that led to a hung jury. Today, we learned that a new trial has begun:

Ex-candidate Tan Nguyen back on trial for lying (OC Register)
A new trial was launched today for former congressional candidate Tan Nguyen, who faces obstruction of justice charges related to a controversial letter sent to Latino voters in his 2006 challenge of Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Santa Ana.
In August, there was a hung jury in the same case, with jurors voting 11-1 for conviction on one charge and 9-3 on the other.
. . .
With Nguyen, federal prosecutors are pursuing a tack similar to that used in the previous trial. They allege that Nguyen was behind the controversial letter from beginning to end, that when an investigation started he asked a 23-year-old office worker to take responsibility, and that he lied to investigators when he said he had nothing to do with the final drafting and mailing of the letter.
. . .
Prosecutors say they will present emails showing Nguyen participated all along – emails that were also used as evidence in the earlier trial. They may also call to the witness stand those who Nguyen claims were responsible for the mailings, as they did previously.
