The Hewes home in Tustin |
THOUSANDS OF GEESE. A little bit of local history for you today: this is an excerpt (from pages 5-6) of "Orange County Before it was a County" (1989) by Stephen Gould: Here's something I found from the Tustin News, 1968:
FIRST SPADEFUL. Presumably, the "Centennial edition" was put out some time in 1968 (the Tustin Centennial year).
The "spade" photo first appeared in the Tustin News on May 30, 1968, six days after the event depicted.
The city of Tustin was the original instigator of what became Saddleback College and the Saddleback Community College District. See Wacky Origins.
Here's a weird little item. In 1966, Tom Fuentes was living in Garden Grove. Up pops this:
TOM FUENTES DOES NOT APPROVE. Pretty odd opining coming from a 17-year-old kid, but probably on point. Not sure about the long hair, but "drinking and marauding" can be unwholesome, I suppose.
Kirker was involved in local (Garden Grove/Santa Ana) politics and presided over an organization of ex-WWII POWs. He was very much a paranoic cold warrior. I do believe he was involved in acting and directing later in life (or at least someone who shared his name was).
