I heard this morning on NPR that some local colleges are hiring 8-10-12-20 FT faculty. Not IVC.

According to the VPI, who attended last week's Academic Senate meeting, we'll be hiring 11 faculty.

They said something like that last year, then cut a bunch. How many will Saddleback hire?

Looks like we are broiling in the sum tomorrow for the 9/11 event. Is that still the case? Anybody know? If so, that's insane!

9:33, the last I heard, SC's number was 16.

I predict that Davit and Glenn will pull a few at the end of the game as always -and that Saddleback might ask for more and get them. Anyone want to start a pool? We have students whose transfer are delayed because we they cannot get into Math and English classes. We do not have enough instructors in those areas and cannot offer enough classes. There is an equation to see this but the admin won't see it. Students have to take those elsewhere and sometimes do not come back to us. Why should they? the college doesn't not really care enough to make it work for them. OR they stay here for extra time and get suckered out of more money and time. The students on visas are really hurt. These areas (Math and English) are impacted and there is no leadership to address this at any level. A student who took developmental math and writing last year but can't get into WR 1 this fall will not be able to transfer next year. Too bad.

The problem is the leadership or lack thereof and also the hiring policy which doesn't allow for tough looks at impacted areas. So, no Math or English teachers but instead robotics. And yes, students go elsewhere. They must. All the classes are closed 7 weeks before the semester opens.

As a member of DRAC (or District Resource Allocation Committee), I find a standing item on the agenda: the 50% rule. The district does not want to go under the % but it suggests to me that they do not want either college to have more new faculty, the pivotal element in my way of thinking that would radically improve student success.

We might have additional FT colleagues if each president pushed for this. At Saddleback, over 60 of some classes are taught by PTs. When I came to Saddleback in 1981 we had 32 full time faculty in English. We now have 18. And the number of students attending has markedly increased.

If PT work is so good (and saves $) then we could save more with PT Administrators and Managers.

I agree with Bob. How about the better, lifetime benefits package admins and mgrs get? That must be costing a fortune. Why not provide them the same as what everyone else gets? I know, the HR rationale has to do with retention, but aren't they already generously compensated?
