Our pal Jason, with his odd Chinese Holga camera, took some pics this week of that weird "Hell" guy discussed in a post earlier today (Lana Lang's Repent or Hell):
Does anybody know what this gal was doing?

Love these last couple posts - I am so glad that you guys put this blog out there - it documents our lives on campus and that's important. Makes me feel like I belong to a place where people (some!) think about what it is they are doing. Thanks.
Sorry about the quality of the prints. One was damaged by the metal tongs, and I dropped the negative of another. Actually, some are not even real prints, and just a snippet of the contact sheets blown up. I'll have more lab time next week, but by then, the fervor of the incident should have passed.
The girl is sticking her tongue out, and giving a feisty thumbs down in the direction toward the crowd.
This guy is a hoot. Though, I wish people would learn to ignore him.
It's all the attention that he gets that keeps him going. Besides, its not like he has anything remotely interesting to say; that's why he holds a sign. Everything he has to say is right there, you can read it from a distance, or in passing. Vwallah! (See? Cause it's a magic trick: his thoughts fill two sides of a piece of cardboard; provided the font is big enough).
Not even worth a debate, that's how I feel about him.
Amazes one to see how ignorant students and some faculty are concerning free speech when a nutjob like this guy shows up on campus. Most seem to embrace free speech as long as its speech they agree with. Otherwise, they complain and complain and demand immediate action to remove the irritation. This nutjob actually needs police protection at times when he appears on campuses because the ignorants physically attack him. Would be nice to see education occur in classrooms and on college campuses for a change. Most students today know absolutely nothing about the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution and the freedom we enjoy as a result.

Actually, the event was rather amusing to watch from both sides. Students got a kick out of the guy - we knew how ridiculous he was. It had nothing to do with personal beliefs, and everything to do with method. There were Christians, Muslims, and Atheists in the crowd, and none wanted to confront him about Christianity, but his own version of it.
There were no physical attacks. Campus Police loitered nearby just to keep eyes on the "situation." For clarity, I walked up to the female officer on campus and asked her what conditions would necessitate removal. She said some sort of physical aggravation, or threat of physical force. She mentioned how some students would get close to him and he would brush back quickly to avoid physical confrontation.
I don't see ignorance in students or faculty by allowing him to do as he did. No one asked him to leave because they disagreed with what he was saying. Most of the crowd wanted an honest intellectual debate (the 25+ minutes I hung around anyway) that he seemed incapable of providing without insult or self-righteous voice raising and finger pointing.
Free speech was embraced, and mocked in return (Even immaturity is protected, yeah?). Not sure why you feel education had not been embraced in the classroom simply because a crowd of students felt like arguing with a "nutjob."
Have you been in a classroom lately?
I remember just last semester watching a "scandalous" video with Chomsky debating the merits of freedom of speech by defending the positions of those using it - not because he agreed with the persons views, but because he felt obligated to protect said persons constitutionally protected right to speak his opinion.
Yep. This kind of instruction happens in the classroom at IVC. And, in my own experiences, having supposedly "fought" to protect the preservation of these freedoms overseas, even the military looks down on the free speech they aim to protect.
Imagine that. Conservative military disregards free speech, and "liberal" liberals at a liberal school of higher learning supporting a persons right to spew nonsense. Moments like these, I am proud to be an American.
Too bad I didn't get any video - I'm sure my firsthand account of the situation means nothing to you and your deadset ways.
Good response holga jason. Will you please take my class! I witnessed a small portion of the event and it seemed to me to be just the way holga jason described it.
After a decade of suing this District for First Amendment violations, it was wonderful to watch the First Amendment in action. It was even more wonderful that the IVC police and the administration upheld the gentleman's First Amendment right to be on campus and our students' First Amendment right to express their interests. Our students were great and so was campus police.

Thank you Bohrstein for your comment. I couldn't have said it better myself. From my experience the only way to deal with these obnoxious street preachers is simply just that, don't. Don't engage them in any conversation or give them an audience b/c you can spin your wheels all you want too, but you can't win. This guy is a religious lunatic looking for an audience and as far as he's concerned everyone but him and a few other fanatics are all going to hell in a hand basket. You just cannot argue with a crazy person like this, nor pay attention. You're right, people need to just ignore this guy and I believe that it's very possible that he'll just go away and find others to annoy. After all, don't students have to be in classes? Sure,he has his first amendment right to carry around his signs & say whatever he wants too, but by ignoring him completely is our freedom of speech & basically telling him "shoo! go away!" You know, hasn't this guy gone over to UCI yet?
P.S. is this guy even a student at either of the campuses? If not it's called trespassing.
I think I saw Tom Fuente's business card hang out of his pocket.....
This guy is hilarious. He's been down to Saddleback a couple times. But anyways, I saw him out there the other day and had to have a little chat (right before the big crowd started gathering around). Funny how he resorted back to what they teach in evangelical/born-again school, mainly, frustrate the person who is attempting to discourse with you by using red herring spin tactics.
LAME.
he told me I was going to hell.
Actually. I dont know if anyone remembers the kid that used to hand out cash. HE told me I was a bad person and going to hell because I didnt believe in the word of his god (jesus). I laughed and started my own cash handing out business right across the grass lot from him. He ended up leaving.
