Condom caper update: Wayne's retaliation?

LAST NIGHT, we told the story of an "Incident Report" submitted by custodians to Human Resources about a month ago. (See "It's a condom," he said )

The gist of the story was that, last month, Director of Facilities and Maintenance, Wayne Ward, called in the day custodians concerning the alleged fact that condoms were left in a groundskeeper's locker. During the meeting, according to our source, Director Ward angrily browbeat the custodians, accused them (or one among them) of the condom stunt, and threatened the perptrator, should Wayne learn his identity, with firing.

The custodians feel strongly that they were treated unfairly and unprofessionally by Wayne.

Hence the Incident Report.

But that process has, it seems, offered them no protection. (See yesterday's blog.)

We at DISSENT the BLOG agreed to present this matter but explained the risks involved. Nevertheless, the employees with which we spoke supported drawing attention to the situation. And so, last night, we told the story.

TODAY, one of the custodians reported to us that, in his judgment, Wayne has responded by retaliating against the day custodians.

According to that custodian, this afternoon, Wayne informed the day custodians—angrily—that he is breaking up the usual custodial teams. Instead, he is assigning large areas (e.g., 2 entire buildings) to individual custodians.

"What exactly is the problem with that?", I asked.

"It's more area than anyone can handle," said our source. "It's simple. We won't be able to do everything, and then people will complain about our work."

"He's setting us up to fail."

—OK, Glenn. Lead.

Isn't retaliation a violation of something, somewhere?

Don't these people have a contract?

Aren't they protected somehow?

Are does their boss get to do whatever he wants with them?

They have a union.

It could be that management doesn't really understand what that means and no one has pointed it out to them...yet.

wayne is not the problem. the real problem is a culture of entitlement. solution - contract out the custodial responsibilities. that is the only way IVC will see improvement in cleanliness and efficiency. get rid of your current feather-bedding union custodial staff. they are nothing but problems and a drain on already scarce resources.

THE LAST COMMENT WAS MADE BY WAYNE WARD WHO WANTS TO REMAIN ANONYMOUS?

Wayne for the 100,000.00 you make you could hire four custodians, give it up man, the college will run beter without you!

Featherbeds? Someone has a featherbed on campus?

I want mine! Plus pillows please.

Come on. Look at all the feathers that fluff up the admin salaries if you want to point out excess.

What kind of raises did they get last year? or was it the year before?

Someone remind me...

Hmmm. Anonymous at 8:05 suggests "contracting out" - and invokes the "culture of entitlement" - those are some big words coming from the most entitled sector on campus.

Anonymous said...

Doesn't anybody work here anymore? blogging all day? you might be contracted out too? if the Waynster had his way?

Anonymous said...

What we have here is a failure to communicate, one person is doing all the talking and thinking for there dept.(WW) and when it doesnt work the blame is put on someone else. This means if the custodians dont get the blame there new manager will. This place is not Waynes World it belongs to SOCCCD sorry to disappoint you Wayne Get a life

Now contracting out the custodial duties does have merit. Anything would be better than what we have now.

Anonymous said...

"Contracting out" is a euphemism for using underpaid workers who receive no benefits. Why some people think that paying people fairly for unpleasant work is some sort of "entitlement" is beyond me.

Now let me set some people straight. I know for a fact that you will have happy employees when your boss is a happy camper respectable and a team player. Wayne Ward is on a team of his own and no body can play with him or againts him. He knows it all and he makes the biggest mistakes for F&M. If you really want to know just ask the source his employees under him come on dont be afraid ask im sure atleast the custodians will tell you.

wayne ward is doing anything to save a buck! this is why everyone in A-100 loves the man. the more money he saves the fatter their pockets get. give the custodians their 7.5 percent and send them back on graveyard!

Anonymous said...

I myself have met the custodians they are good honest workers that dont deserve to go back on graveyard or be treated like illegal immigrants like the ones Wayne Ward is used to working with. remember we are UNION.

Temporaries from "Molly Maid" could do a better job at keeping our college clean. Time for change.

Anonymous said...

WELL HIRE THE MOLLY MAIDS MAYBE IF YOU TAKE ALL THE STUDENTS OUT OF THE CLASSROOMS THEY COULD CLEAN THE PLACE UP.... MAYBE THEY COULD HAVE GRAVEYARD CLASSES, THEN THE MOLLY MAIDS COULD CLEAN??????

Anonymous said...

WE CAN CONTRACT OUT ALL THE CLASSIFIEDS JOBS, JUST GO TO HOME DEPOT, $20.00 A DAY THINK OF ALL THE MONEY THIS COLLEGE COULD SAVE...

Anonymous said...

Maybe the Molly Maids comments are just trying to be funny, but what's not funny is that company treats their people like slaves, and pays them crap.

There's more to being a decent society than saving money by screwing people out of fair pay.

Get these guys some decent carts. They make the school look like it belongs in COMPTON! Has anyone seen the sinks in A-200 and A-400? This is Irvine people, this campus should not look the way it does.
