Music from "The Curse"
Well, no, not really, but I've always loved this old Jonathan Richman instrumental
The Crenshaw performance is old, too, but it's perfect pop!

Time slips away
Well, hello there
My, it's been a long, long time
How am I doing?
Oh, I guess that I'm doing fine
It's been so long now
But it seems now that it was only yesterday
Gee, ain't it funny
How time slips away?
How's your new love?
I hope that he's doing fine
I heard you told him
That you'd love him 'til the end of time
Now that's the same thing that you told me
Seems like just the other day
Gee, ain't it funny
How time slips away?
I gotta go now
I guess I'll see you around
Don't know when though
Never know when I'll be back in town
But remember what I tell you
In time, you're gonna pay
And it's surprising
how time slips away

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Willie Nelson has turned 90, celebrating all this weekend with his pals at the Hollywood Bowl. Rebel Girl isn't there but one of her students is. That counts for something.
This song counts for a lot:
Pancho and Lefty
Was gonna keep you free and clean
And now you wear your skin like iron
And your breath as hard as kerosene
Weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams
Pancho was a bandit boy
His horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
Ah but that's the way it goes
All the Federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose
Lefty, he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows
All the Federales say
They could have had him any day
We only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose
The poets tell how Pancho fell
And Lefty's living in cheap hotels
The desert's quiet, Cleveland's cold
And so the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true
But save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do
And now he's growing old
All the Federales say
We could have had him any day
We only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose
A few gray Federales say
We could have had him any day
We only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose

This Day in Dissent History: April 21, 2009: The spirit of the clock tower
14 years ago today on April 21, 2009, Rebel Girl and Roy scrambled around campus with what was left of the venerable clock tower. Roy took photos. Some fun! If you want to see the clock's hands, they still have them in their office. Things are better now.
The Spirit of the Clock Tower
Irvine Valley College once had a clock tower. It was a good clock tower, as clock towers go. But some of its timber was rotten.
So they tore it down.

So they tore it down.

We managed to rescue the clock’s hands. That’s all that’s left. Plus our memories.
The clock tower is gone. But the spirit of the clock tower survives.
Here are some pictures that the Reb and I took today around campus and inside the new BSTIC building.

The A-quad: somebody told us that they put this slab of concrete "right on top of the bricks."
"So the bricks are OK," he said.
"Oh."
