| Anissa and Brittany: an event was needed |
IVC President Glenn Roquemore spoke, offering various murky thoughts (or, at any rate, he made a series of points that yielded little clarity), although he finally offered some helpful remarks at the end of his ten-minute commentary, noting that last Wednesday's hate speakers were in no sense sponsored by the college. The college could not prohibit that speech, but neither was it sponsoring it.

Next up was IVC Police Chief Will Glen, who helpfully pointed out that the speech that we encountered last week was BOTH hate speech and protected free speech, a crucial point. (It's not "either/or." See No, there’s no “hate speech” exception to the First Amendment.) And so we can't, and we shouldn't, prevent such speech.
But we can condemn it just the same. There's no contradiction. Last week's crew was obnoxious and offensive, but they plainly were within their rights to express themselves as they did. As a judge in federal court said, in my own 1st Amendment case seventeen years ago, "That's just life under the First Amendment!" Deal with it.

Next, people in the audience had an opportunity to speak, and that's when I had to leave to teach.

I'm glad for this event, which was well attended. We need more opportunities for thought and conversation on this campus. Let's have less astounding kiddie inventions and more discussion about issues. IVC is, after all, a college. Glenn.

I wasn't there when it happened but if all I have heard and red is true it wasn't Christianity he was representing it was his flesh getting in the way and that's only if he is truly saved. The flesh and the Spirit of God battles each other daily. The spirit of God works to transform us by convicting us to do what the Lord our God wants but the flesh at times or the the old man in us will come out at times if it is not under submission to the spirit of God. If they were attacking and not witnessing then it was the flesh and not the Spirit of God.

The students were especially great. Clearly more needs to be done. A good start. Wonderful turn-out. A sustained, engeged audience.
The only people who should be free to say what they want on IVC'S campus, are people who have some affiliation. Faculty, Staff, or Student. If someone comes on campus to instigate, the college is well within the law to ask them to leave. And if they don't I believe they could arrest and cite them. I hope that the person being taken away in cuffs in the video wasn't a student.
9:18, The First Amendment does not work the way you think it does. Someone's affiliation with a public school doesn't give her or him more free speech (or less for that matter) than someone else.
Yes, that is an IVC student being put under arrest.
An employee said she no longer feels safe at work and several students had complete melt downs. One in particular said she feels threatened every day by Glenn, administration and her professors.
It is my understanding that the student who spoke about feeling threatened by admin and instructors has some other issues which might inspire this perception.
I didn't notice any students having what I would characterize as "complete melt downs." I witnessed students speaking with emotion about their experiences - not a bad thing at all. The students were great.
I believe that the employee who said she no longer felt safe at work also suggested that an event at this kind would not have happened or been allowed to occur - at Saddleback...However, this assertion seemed to be based on a lack of information about how the law works. I hope she seeks out Chief Glen for more information about what can and cannot be done. He can also reassure her about the safety of the campus. More information about the nature of the visiting group (what they are and what they are not, etc.)may also reassure her.
I think the community forum was successful. We need more activities like this.
The students were great and even though I did miss a part of the event, I do not recall anyone saying they feel threatened by Glenn, administration and her professors, if it was stated I am also sure it involved other issues. I did not see complete melt downs either and saw students fearful and concerned but given that our sterile community rarely has anything of a controversial nature on campus, who would be surprised that if student are concerned when a rather dramatic example of free speech occurs? More than anything it points out our need to have more complex and informative topics for students to listen to other than watching students dance in International costumes or serving green ice cream on St. Patty's day. This is a college as Roy has pointed out and maybe the reactions we are witnessing from our students has more to do with our students' lack of exposure on our college campus than to a singular event that was clearly over the top and provoking. Some sort of continued exposure could ultimately be IVC's teaching moment in all of this.
the speaker was a plant by a few of the more active liberal faculty (red and chunk) wanting to make a point and to create an opportunity to discuss their own political views under the guise of "a rather dramatic example of free speech"

I also heard what that older African-American woman said. She said she feels threatened everyday. Threatened by prez Roquemore, faculty, admin, campus police, IVC, at the grocerery store, etc... Maybe she ought to ask her president Obama to fix that through an executive order?

I attended 90% of the forum. This is a great opportunity to teach our students what the 1st Ammendment is all about. Most students at IVC have no clue what free speech is all about due to their various backgrounds.
I love free speech!
I found it funny that the older student felt racism from a student for driving too close while she slowly drove over the speed bump.

I like how the administration gave themselves a huge payraise totalling over 5 million. Wow. Has the Classified been taken care of yet?
Nope.
Classified is being asked to take it in the shorts to fund the admin pay raise. Once again we gettin' screwed.
Rather odd and surreal isn't it that the administration defends the 1st Amendment yet, they are so retaliatory against the faculty and worse against the classified when someone in those ranks says anything - anything - they don't like, - especially if it offends the VPI, the president or the public information officer. These guys are a real piece of work, I'll tell ya!
Maybe not the place for this but, has anyone figured out why the new Dean of Fine Arts seems to apparently spend so much time at ATEP even though I do not think the Fine Arts people have much in the works for over there?
And, anyone know what happened to Barry from Media/IT? Haven't seen him for quite some time. We're screwed if he's gone!

Barry, poor guy was injured on the job as a result of ongoing hazardous working conditions, so hazardous that his department was recently cited by CAL OSHA!
really? cal-osha? details please. WTH is Hagan doing about it? Or Davit? That's pretty bad.
What 4:59 said is not entirely accurate. Barry got injured while lifting a heavy object, that was his own doing. The IT Dept. was indeed cited by CALOSHA for several violations.
