Police ID man suspected in rampage (OC Register)
Police identified Ali Syed, an unemployed sometime-student who lived at home with his parents, as the killer who stole cars and fired into freeway traffic during a shooting spree that covered 25 miles and took less than an hour. “I killed somebody,” he reportedly told the driver of a pickup during one carjacking. “Today is my last day.”….

It's only a matter of time before one of these nutsies targets one of our campuses. Are we ready for this? What can we do to prepare that we are not doing now? Are our campus police trained and ready to respond? Are we trained and ready to respond? Are we doing everything reasonable to prevent one of these incidents on our campuses? And who is responsible for asking and answering these questions?
How do you 'prepare' for something like this? Armed guards in Kevlar and riot-gear in every building? After the shooting back east, that moron from the NRA thought it would be a good idea to teach proper firearm handling to the teachers. Is that how we prepare? People always say to prepare for the unexpected, but that's nonsense. I don't believe it's possible to prepare and/or plan for every nut-job's random acts of violence.
They interviewed the parents of the killer, and the father said "I heard the noise and the yelling coming from his room, but I don't like to get involved. And then I heard the shots...". If parents don't want to get involved in the lives of troubled kids, I'm not sure what difference our Segway-mounted/Paul Blart-esque campus police are going to make.
Many of these kids who turn to violence have a history of being troubled. Often, previously, they were identified as troubled long before violence erupts--e.g., by teachers. We can do a better job than we have done dealing with those students. We've chronicled some real doozies in the past--cases in which a student displays very troubling behavior (wandering around menacingly with scissors in their hands), and administrators utterly bungle the matter. But top administration at this college does not take our complaints, or anyone's complaints, seriously. --RB
Today's OC Reg article says the father admitted to legally purchasing the shotgun for his son. What the hell is wrong with these people?
John & Ken on KFI described how Syed blew his brain right out of his own skull almost completely intact and it was just lying there in the street next to him.
Well, that's all you need to know about John & Ken.
If that's true they ought to charge the father with 3 murders.
What's the basis for that bromide, 10:52?
See 3:10. That's the basis.
People need to stop fear mongering. Statements like "it's only a matter of time before something happens at our college" is really pretty silly. Yes, there have been a number of school shootings lately, but if you look at it in comparison to the total number of schools in the US, the chances are pretty slim. This only feeds into the crazy demands of people like Derek Reeve and Don Wagner (not to mention the NRA) to arm all teachers.
Most teachers can't find their own ass with both hands let alone know which end of a gun is the business end. No, don't give teachers guns. Not a good idea!!!
