Just great. But I'm not sure that America abandoned it's position as the keeper higher standards, the "people who care" after 9-11. In 1990 or 1991 America targeted Iraqi water and sanitation systems with the specific purpose of depriving the people of those basic necessities, and with the knowledge that resultant disease outbreaks would cause much death and suffering, especially to children. This is specifically forbidden by the Geneva Convention, and yet, it was done. "The people who care", indeed, but about what exactly?

Correction for above:
Make that "the keeper OF higher standards...

ES, that which causes you to omit a word and not realize it typically causes your readers to unconsciously fill in that word when they read. @ Right you are about the Gulf War and our curiously inconsistent regard for Geneva conventions and the like. But I do hope that we will make some effort to acknowledge our abandonment of principle this time and to feel properly ashamed and determined not to fail in this regard again. -R
Yes, I truly hope so, too. I just read this somewhat related piece - what do you think about it?
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/23/opinion/23iht-edcohen.html
ES
I'll try to read the NYT piece more carefully later, when I have more time. I do not, however, understand this unwillingness to identify our sins--they are egregious sins--and to state clearly our determination not to repeat them. I'm not especially interested in putting Cheney and Rumsfeld (et al.) in jail, though that would be nice. The point is to acknowledge the enormity of what we allowed to happen, to be clear about how it was allowed to happen (yes, identifying who failed us, and there are many parties, including the press and the "loyal opposition"), and to set about not to let it happen again. Every time I hear somebody (who, typically, did absolutely nothing when it would have really counted) plead for "healing, not blame," I just wanna hall off and smash them in the face with a big Nerf hammer. And I never feel that way.
I think it would be a great idea to spend a day on this topic in class, as you are considering doing. It's such an important issue, and disturbing, bewildering, complex...
And with it being in the news again now, with declassified memos and other recent revelations, I think this would be an excellent time to devote a day to it. (since you asked :)
ES
Be sure you get permission from the dean prior to the discussion.
Aw man, if you do have a day like that, can I come sit in?
Sounds like it would be fascinating.
BS (wondering what happened to AS, CS, and DS)
FS and GS had them over for drinks the other day, and I haven't heard from them since.
ES
Oh no, I never trusted those guys.
You know ES, there used to be a TB before you came along. Him and RB didn't always get along so well but he was still fun to read.
Do ya think RB did something to TB? I sometimes think his inner wolf gets the best of him.
Could be...I mean that Nerf-hammer comment of RB's really scared me. I'll never be able to look at him the same way again...someone with feelings like that could be capable of anything! Poor TB.
I wonder if SB helped RB do it?
It's possible. Those silent, virtual entities can't be trusted.
Man, RB should take a ban hammer to these posts. We really get off topic.
So... this AG commander. Think she and RG know each other? I like the way RG writes, lots of things are implied.
RB is tolerant and has a great sense of humor; that is probably why he has not "hammered" us (yet).
Agree with you on RG.
ES
Sheesh. I go away for one day and the blog totally goes to shit! Where's my Nerf hammer?!
Like children, we become fractious when ignored.
ES
Speaking of fractious....
Hey, Bohrstein and ES, cut it out with the private (or at least incomprehensible to the rest of us) jokes about unknown initialed people, okay?
You are both great, but I am becoming QUITE annoyed. I might have to go buy a nerf hammer myself
It was not meant to be private or incomprehensible:
Bohrstein noticed that he is BS and I'm ES, so he "wondered" what happened to AS, CS, and DS, as in ABCDE(S). I played along. Same for the RB and TB, SB thing - RST(B). And so forth. Sorry it annoyed you, we'll cut it out.
ES
And of course RG is our own Rebel Girl.
Righto 8:20 (RB? or RG?).
As ES said it wasn't meant to be something that was between us (I don't even personally know ES), nor did I think it was totally incomprehensible. But I do love to litter my posts with minute connections to little things, sort of a nod to my schizo side I guess.
But, I agree and thus I'll join ES in on the apologies rank. Since she has been so gracious to do all the work, I'll simply stand by and nod. But hey, at least we realized we were being obnoxious - that counts for something, right?
End.
BS
Got it, ES and BS. Actually, at one point I had the ABCDE(S) thing figured out--but then there came a reference to TB (and I figured out that one, too). Then I must have suffered a mini-stroke, 'cause I forgot it all and felt grumpy and out of it. Hence my cranky note.
Thanks for your sweet apologies! Totally accepted.
KJ
Thanks for understanding, KJ - you are very gracious, and I appreciate it! It's one of the things I really like about this blog - for the most part, everyone is civilized...I know Roy has to 'clean up' after some comments, but not too often, it seems.
ES
This topic is at the forefront for one reason. It is the mainstream media’s sad attempt to distract the public from the real issues; their darling Obama and his administration’s reoccurring dismal failures.
Now you know you need to go ahead list examples of Obama's reoccuring [sic] dismal failures.
ES
Hey 8:35!
Where did you go??
Much like a drive-by shooting, I guess your comment was a drive-by "talking point"!
ES (Still waiting to discuss all those RECURRING dismal failures.)
