Saddleback College is still smokin'
Marla Jo Fisher of the OC Register reports (2 more O.C. colleges ban smoking) that Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College (in Orange) have now joined two other OC community colleges—namely, Fullerton and Golden West—in banning smoking on campus, except for parking lots.
Santa Ana College has gone further, banning the use of any tobacco products. The school has adopted the designation “Tobacco-free campus.”
Marla notes that, when, some time ago, Fullerton College banned smoking and eliminated ashtrays, trash-can fires started breaking out all over campus like pimples on a teen-aged face.
At the February meeting of the SOCCCD board of trustees, a student addressed the board, urging support for making Saddleback College “Tobacco-free.”
Trustees stared at the kid like carps.
No doubt efforts to drag our colleges into the Twenty-First Century will continue, inspiring Trustee Tom Fuentes (at some future point) to intone that Socialism and Humanism, among other dark things, continue to menace "our Land," tempting our "good" young people into lives of gayness, vegetarianism, and unfettered teetotalitarianism.
Amen.

So you think SC should just follow the rest of the sheep? Nah! Smoke free campuses are for wussies - if ya got em, light em up!!
Ah, the intellectuals have weighed in once again!
Liberal intelligencia is often schizophrenic - on one hand the lefty's want smoke free campuses - on the other they want to legalize marijuana (California AB340) - so color me stupid, Chunky - your sanctimonious judgement has little value for anything.
Well, apparently it does have value for something, Anon @ 6:07, 'cause YOU keep coming back here.
Why smoke 'em...When you can chew 'em
I, for one, do color you stupid, 6:07. Legalizing marijuana for private use doesn't entail allowing anyone to smoke anything (dope or tobacc-y) in public.
Get a brain, please, or some training in critical thinking.
6:07, you probably fancy yourself a conservative. So, you should be in favor of legalized pot, then, right?
Ohhhh, I see 9:08. Forgive me for being so fickin stupid. Let's get this straight - as long as we don't do it in public smoking dope and tobacco is ok. Sounds like freedom to me, if you live in a socialist state, that is. And considering the added carnage that will likely result on our roadways because Mary Jane is legal will certainly reduce green house gases, so I can see the logic behind your "critical thinking." I still have a question though - why is it that liberals are so intent with controlling other peoples behavior but not their own? Guess that requires a more "crtical thinking," and we already know that I need some remediation in that area.
How's about this - to quote a somewhat funny yet condescending message old Chunky posted on this site with some frequency in the past that shows a soldier holding a canteen cup - may I suggest that you "Have a cup of shut-the-fuck-up!"
And, no I do not consider myself a conservative, 10:55 - you can keep your political and idiological labels for yourselves - I am an all American mixed breed that does not appreciate assholes telling me how to live my life.
Is it safe to assume that you'd love to tell people how to live their lives, though? Such as telling gays and lesbians they can't marry? Or women bette stop wanting to terminate pregnancies?
6:07, I am somewhat ambivalent about banning tobacco at a public college. On the one hand, students should not be compelled to breath smoke. On the other hand, it seems unlikely that outdoor smoking (the only kind at issue nowadays) really creates a health risk for anyone (with common sense enough to stay away from gaggles of smokers). Banning the chewing of tobacco seems nuts to me. How does chewing hurt anyone (beyond the chewer)? I do, however, think that smoking is a disastrous practice, one that a society rightly discourages (in a way that recognizes a person's right to be imprudent or unwise). It is only in that sense, I suppose, that I think that we need to move away from smoking over time. Just "banning" it when so many still smoke just seems illiberal and ham-fisted. --RB
It's funny that we pass laws to protect us like wearing a seat belt or having to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle but we allow a industry to produce a product that does one thing, KILLS people.
8:47, you're looking for logic in all the wrong places. Well, anyway, I wouldn't expect much consistency or reason in laws. I suppose, if we really wanted to protect people, we'd prohibit McDonalds.
Next thing ya know everyone will be ordered to wear IVC blue shirts... Oh that does happend tommorow on Senior Day.
moooooo I hear the cattle truck coming.
next thing ya know we will all have to drive hybrid Toyotas, wear glasses, carry a Roget Reference Book and eat no-meat products.
heheheeeee\ps smoking sucks
