• Sarah Palin's college years left no lasting impression:
What can we learn about our political stars from impressions they made in college?• From CSUF’s Daily Titan, yesterday:
Sen. John McCain is remembered as a passionate contrarian who won the hearts of his classmates at the Naval Academy. Sen. Barack Obama, who attended Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law School, is remembered as a daunting scholar and calming influence. Sen. Joe Biden, who had a brush with plagiarism at Syracuse University College of Law, is remembered fondly by professors who found him charming.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, however, is barely remembered at all….
Congressman criticizes Powell's endorsement: Ed Royce meets CSUF students to discuss his backing of Sarah Palin as VP pick:
Congressman Ed Royce (R–Fullerton) said Colin Powell "did not think it through" when he endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for president. Royce met with a small group of Cal State Fullerton students and professors in the Titan Student Union Monday. In addition to his own political career, Royce talked about his role in advising Sen. John McCain to pick Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate....In this morning’s Inside Higher Ed:
• [MCCAIN'S STUPID PEOPLE ARE KILLING BEAR CUBS.] Authorities are investigating a bizarre incident in which a 75-pound bear cub was shot and left at the campus of Western Carolina University, draped in Obama campaign posters, The Asheville Citizen-Times reported. University officials said that they couldn’t determine the motive for the incident, but were troubled by it.
• [CRACKER JACK DEGREE.] Education doctorates are becoming a popular topic for review. On Monday, the American Educational Research Association and the National Academy of Education announced a joint review of education research doctoral programs. Although more than 1,800 such doctorates are awarded each year, a joint announcement by the two groups said that there has never been a comprehensive review of these programs. Last year, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced a three-year project to re-invigorate Ed.D. programs.
• From this morning's New York Times:
Fresh face on cable, Sharp rise in ratings:
Rachel Maddow, a woman who does not own a television set, has done something that is virtually unheard of: she has doubled the audience for a cable news channel’s 9 p.m. hour in a matter of days....

Why have we not yet heard from any of Obama’s classmates or professors from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law School? How about any of his colleagues from where he taught law? How about any of his colleagues from the law firms where he worked?
Palin gave SNL their best ratings in 16 years! Not surprising since their routine skits are as creative as “fart face.” Tina Fey snubbed Palin. How arrogant and unprofessional is that? Sour grapes! After this the network should just discontinue the dismal SNL and stop beating a dead horse because it’s going to be all downhill from here. Comedy Central runs rings around SNL.
It’s no surprise about Colin Powell. Did you really think he was going to endorse McCain?
How can Inside Higher Ed simply draw the conclusion (as they did in their caption) it was McCain supporters who killed the bear cub? Because the corpse was covered in Obama campaign materials? Hardly sufficient. What real evidence to they have that supports their conclusion?
Rachel Maddow is in the business of coercion and shock-value reporting. It’s no wonder the ratings are up. People tend to be attracted to that stuff. Maybe she should be a cop instead?
Kieth Oberman needs to go home and have a good cry. Perhaps he needs to go back into sports reporting?
I'm sorry. It wasn't Inside Higher Ed's caption. It was Roy's caption. My mistake.
"Rachel Maddow is in the business of coercion and shock-value reporting. It’s no wonder the ratings are up. People tend to be attracted to that stuff."
--Ever heard of Fox "News" and EIB?
Kieth Oberman needs to go home and have a good cry. Perhaps he needs to go back into sports reporting?
--Yes, Palin's future position after she loses.
"Why have we not yet heard from any of Obama’s classmates or professors from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law School?"
This is a big old lie; did you not see the Frontline documentary on Obama and McCain?
A couple of months back, the New York Times had a lengthy article about Obama's career as a college professor, what his colleagues and students thought of him, etc.
You've got to stop watching Fox news and listening to Limbaugh, dude. You might actually learn something.
Rachel Maddow's show is certainly not "shock-value" journalism. Far from it. Hers is one of the few programs that merges playfulness and humor with actual points and arguments. Perhaps you should actually listen to what she is saying.
Try having something to say. Provide an argument. Ridiculing or dismissing SNL is not a point. Neither is it an argument. It is simply irrelevant.
"Hers is one of the few programs that merges playfulness and humor with actual points and arguments."
I guess your definition of "actual" points and arguments is that they are "actual" only if you agree with her. Otherwise they wouldn't be "actual" points and arguments.
Playfulness and humor? Common gimme a break! Actually quite scary!
No one has ridiculed or dismissed SNL. One of their skits last Sat. was named "fart face" and the phrase "fart face" was repeated probably over 100 times. It was neither funny nor entertaining. It "actually" was pretty sad.
Probably more than half their air time was bogus commercials and ads, obviously capitalizing on Palin’s appearance there. They should have been publically thanking her.
Their ratings have been in the toilet for 16 years now. What Palin "actually" did was provide an SNL stimulus package to all those arrogant, uncreative and boring people there. If a show doesn’t pull the ratings for 16 years, then how can a network afford to keep it? The answer is; they can’t. They’ve been losing money on it. How have I “dismissed” SNL?
Mmmmm - me likum bear cubs - tasty!!!
1:30, please try harder. You seem incapable of understanding simple points. My point earlier was that the failings of SNL are irrelevant to the issues at hand. How do you respond? By once again pointing out the failings of SNL. Good grief.
Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar. (Do I need to explain what that is?) She has a doctorate in politics from Oxford. That she is well educated (especially in politics) is evident in her approach and in her rhetoric. She, more than other progressives on the radio and TV, provides substantial commentary that seldom if ever descend to mere advocacy for "her side."
That you are unable to perceive any of this is not surprising. Do me a favor and take a logic class.
As bright as Maddow may be, remember that she is NOT a journalist. There doesn't appear to be many of that breed left anywhere, certainly not on the cable news networks.
Are you thinking we need journalists to comment on politics? That's a bizarre assumption. In Europe, academics are invited to discuss politics on TV programs. Not journalists. Only in America could one get the daffy idea that something is amiss when the host of a political commentary program is not a "journalist."
In a recent program that I veiwed the presenter said that folks with bachelors degrees are generally more happy and content than those with a masters or doctorates degree, the reason. people with higher degrees dwell and rack their brains on nonsense issues, when they should get a life.
i totally agree.
So the answer to life is less education, right? That probably explains your utter faulure in higher ed.
Maddow is not qualified to be a journalist even with her PhD because she lies, distorts and coerces plus he hairstyle is outdated. Her wardrobe is also too expensive.

NY Times - Hardly a reliable source. You MUST be joking right?
12:34, YOU'RE not qualified to comment, if your points of evaluation are focused on her (not "he") haircut and clothing. Try assessing what is actually being said; then I'll be attentive to your contribution to this discussion.
7:15:00 PM - Thanks for making my point for me. I was doing exactly what the left-wing media does to Sarah Palin, i.e. "she's not qualified because..." and then they focus in on things that are irrelevant like how much was spent on wardrobe, etc… In other words, they keep telling us she's not qualified, they don't tell us why even though she has more exec. experience than the other three.
Maddow's a total commie-hack loser!
