Rejecting Fishy Advice
‘Teach Them to Challenge Authority’: “Stanley Fish may be telling academics to keep their opinions to themselves, but Gregory S. Prince Jr. thinks it is time for colleges to stop trying to make their classrooms neutral. Well, I surveyed my students this semster, something I hadn't done in a while, asking what they liked and disliked in general about the field, courses in it, etc.
One of the big things was, they said they wanted professors to take positions. Composite sketch: "Professors think they should present two sides of an issue, like the TV, and be objective. But I am in college and not trade school because professors do research. They have opinions and I know it because I can look them up. I want them to discuss these opinions with us in class, it's what I'm paying for."
