WHAT HAPPENS when the vital and wonderful duplicating center closes at 4:30 due to staffing shortages?
The walk-up copier machines are generally filled with paper by staff before they leave.
When the duplicating staff leaves early, consider what happens to that supply of paper, say by about 6:00 p.m.?
Remember that the copier machines are locked. So additional paper cannot be supplied by faculty, only by the duplicating center staff.
Know how desperate instructors become when faced with a locked copier machine empty of paper and their impending classes are dependent on what they imagined they would copy and distribute!
Know how some of them run over to A-100 only to find the copier machine there in a similar state—empty and locked.
Know how some of them become inventive and begin to copy their class handouts (if possible) via their office computers—only to discover that the amount of paper and toner in the two faculty copiers is also limited.
Know that this happens on Thursday, about 6:15 p.m., a time during the week when, except for the evening staff, the campus resembles that cliche—a ghost town.
—Albeit a ghost town with two empty, locked copiers.

Where is your evening administrator?
I've always wondered if faculty, especially parttimers, understand the chain of command in the evenings - and if they do, if they know how to access it...I have a feeling that calling the cops on the copier machine is probably not the first thing people want to do - but what is?
I think they should post a photo of the evening adminstrator on the website.
To my knowledge all evening administrators do not have a master key (just Deans, not Directors) so they can unlock the copy center for paper. In addition they do not have a copy machine key to open the paper holder for the machine.
They should....
"Your Success is our Committment"
You would think that a district that spends over 50% of its budget on noninstructional costs would have a fab 24/7 copy center, 7-day a week library and A&R services, lights on and someone welcoming and happy and helpful in A100 all the time. But no.
People should just come in early and get their stuff copied well before class. Only the disorganized complain.
Some people WORK at other places until five or six.
Looks like 8:26 is not one of the early arrivers on campus, elsewise (s)he'd know that the copiers are out of paper until the arrival of our beloved duplicating center chief at 7:30. So those 7 a.m. classes that the deans push to schedule? Those are as unsupported as the 7 p.m. classes.
I too belove the duplicating center copying chief - what happened to his staff?
yes - and good point about the morning classes.
When I am night dean, I don't have keys to anything except my own office.
Perhaps the campus cops have keys to the duplicating center, the paper cabinet inside - and keys to load all the machines - including instructions on how to do so?
Maybe a sign can be posted near the copiers directing people to call the cops when the paper runs out?
Campus police loading paper into the duplicating machines. Good grief.
If not campus police, then who?
Ocne again, the evening staff don't have the support services they need.
How long will the center be closing at 4:30?
STOP COMPLAINING. GET YOUR WORK DONE BEFORE YOU GET TO CAMPUS LIKE THE REST OF US.
I had my own supply of paper in my office and tried to feed it one at a time though the copier's special feed slot -- but gave up.
I don't think the cops have the key to the copying machines.
It's a very small key.
I heard that there is a copy of the tiny key hidden UNDER the copier machine.
All you have to do is lift the machine, then quickly grab the key - voila!
Which side of the copier do I have to lift?
Don't be so hard on the copy guys. The Copy Center Chief has been trying desperately for nearly a year to get a permanent staff person on the evening shift. Why has this not happened? You guessed right: the president and the board don't see it as a priority. Apparently, now it has their attention since Glenn can't get his own copies made. And he doesn't have a key either--nor can he lift the machine, much less a finger! I've also heard a rumor that the previous evening copy guy was recruited from part time faculty(!) Makes you wonder...next we'll see the A&R chief on a lawnmower!! Furthermore, apparently the copy paper supply was locked up years ago because faculty and staff were keeping their personal inkjets flush at district expense....So stop all your whining and get your damn copying done early before the machines go dry! It's not a frickin kinkos after all!
I LOVE the copy guy - always have. I haven't seen any disrespect or lack of appreciation in that direction on this blog - ever.
That said, the college needs to manage its resources so faculty can get what they need to do what they must - access to copying is one important resource - as is support for the evening classes.
Some people work all day at other campuses and then drive over here about 6 or so to prep for their 7:00 o'clock classes - the least they can expect is a stocked copy machine.
I say give the cops keys - that would be a big help.
Giving the cops keys to the copiers doesn't solve the problem. It's a band-aid fix...as usual. Plus, have you ever watched paint dry? This district simply doesn't give a chunk of fecal matter for classes on evenings and weekends. As far as copies go, get them done early. Nuff said....

IVC: We put the cop in copiers!
I know it's bandaid fix but rather a bandaid then an open wound.
Give the cops keys.
I too adore the copy guy (smooch) - this isn't about HIM - it's about the working conditions and short-sighted management.
Glenn can stay late with a key.
I love the copy guy too.
the center has a 48 hour turn around time. get your stuff into the center two days before then pick up your stuff for class the day you need it. da
get a clue people, we are under
staffed and it's not going to change. as long as the admin. keeps giving themselves big raises! WE ARE F---ED!!!
I LOVE the copy guy.
My mother is a retired teacher and she has one of those hand crank purple ink carbon paper copiers - and a stash of of carbon paper - I'll dig it out of the garage and and set it up in the teachers' lounge.
What did we used to call those anyway?
It smells good too!
Me too, I love the copy guy! :)
It has been established beyond doubt - THE COPY GUY IS LOVED.
I think it was called a ditto machine...probably not a good idea to sniff that stuff though.
It's Monday October 3 and both copiers (A-200 and A-100) are out of paper as of 3:00 pm.
OT but related: today I couldn't get into the parking lot because they had changed the gate mechanism and it wasn't working for me - or others. We called parking and they said that before they considered there might be something wrong with the mechanism we would have to go over and get new cards, and try those. They didn't believe we were faculty with classes to teach or a right to be in the parking lot, anyway. Finally they ran our ID numbers through the computer. Officious student workers. I want to see that A in a circle and that blackened flag on my campus now!
